Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

Maybe but leaves us very short in the middle if we get injuries, but you could be right.

Fear it could be Blind, De Jong, & De Vrij, but right now i'd take that !
That wouldn't surprise me at all, but would hardly put the Caf on fire.

We definately need some cover at LB (Blind or Vermalen), at least one top class CB (I don't rate de Vrij as top class but still a good signing) and some cover in CM until Carrick returns (Blind or de Jong). So I expect three more signings.

Vidal is probably still on, but not very likely.

di Maria will probably end up at PSG should he leave Real.

I don't believe these Cavani rumours, we are well stacked up front but we need some pace. Cavani is not pacy.

I would be disgusted with that. I think De Jong would improve us in the short term, but I certainly don't think the other two would really improve us at all. In my opinion they are average players and not as good as what we have anyway.

We need at least one marquee signing to a) have a chance of challenging City and Chelsea and b) appease the fans, especially after Woodward made such comments previously.

Chelsea, City and Arsenal will have strengthened significantly by the time the season starts. We haven't even replaced the players we have lost yet.

I think right now I'd be happy with de Jong, dunno bout the others. We've plenty of time to panic yet anyway.

I think we will sign the players we need as in a DM, one or two CBs and a back up wingback . I don't think it's fair to compare our business with teams like Chelsea and Arsenal because of the turnover we've endured in the dug out. What we are witnessing are the ramifications of failing to get the Fergie succession done correctly, the cost of appointing Moyes. In contrast to Wenger, Mourinho and Pellegrini who already knew what their team needs Van Gaal has to get to know his players, identify the week spots and scout possible reinforcements. He is an experienced operator and he will know that it's very easy to fill the squad with £200m of shit if you don't approach things with a sober mind.
I think we will/should sign the likes of De Vrij, Blind, De Jong or Schneiderlin just to have defensive options and make the team solid first and foremost. If we wrestle Champions League spot back we can then look at raiding the likes of Dortmund, Atletico and Juve for world class reinforcements, I think in this market top players have too many options to take a chance on reviving a supposed fallen giant . Hopefully we will enter the next summer with the same man in charge and having done the necessary preparatory work .

We're desperately short compared to other clubs of our size. Consider we repeatedly brand ourselves as the ''biggest'' club in the world and looking at our squad, it's about time we recruit a couple of big signings. Vidal, Di Maria. It makes no sense if we're not after them.

Am I the only one thinking we are done for the summer. I mean, people kept saying we will sign Vidal once he is back from holidays, but the other players being rumored could have been signed any other time. I just hope we don't panic sign someone like Fellaini last year.
I don't see how that is possible. I can't see us getting the likes of Hummels, Vidal or Di Maria but, if as LVG has said, we are playing 3412 we need at least one more CB surely? Someone like Vermaelen or Di Vrij seems the most likely, maybe even Vlaar.

Get used to it.

Would be a great signing but can't see him leaving Bayern for a team without champions league football, normally when I read about players like Di Maria not wanting to miss out on the CL I don't get it but Robben is in his thirties.

Our ability to bring in a top class CB and another CM will hugely determine this season's outcome. When it comes to our back 3, it's not just a question of quality since we don't even have the numbers to cope with a full season of football with just the 3 of Jones, Smalling and Evans who can be considered as first team players.

Of course I would be happy with Di Maria but If we don't fix the above it would all be useless.

What about a move for Marquinhos? PSG just bought Luiz and need to sell to buy according to FFP.

They're above it. I think that they bought Marquinhos for something around 30 mln pounds, it would probably take around 40-50 from us for them to even consider it.

Not a PL player i think, to weak, bad in the air. That is actually why he was not able to be a first choice in PSG, losing to Alex. Not a great defender but a strong one.
Marquinhos might be a good option for italian or spanish clubs though.

Assuming we don't get Vidal and Di Maria.. Who the hell are we going to sign?

Don't see us getting a winger, or wing back for that matter. Strootman is injured (and Roma are clearly going to be cnuts about it when the time comes) and I'm sure the William Carvalho interest is dead. I'm not the optimistic type but I refuse to believe we'll go into next season without another CM. De Jong then? I can think of no one else unless someone comes out of nowhere.

I've wondered the same thing - all this talk from Woodward, yet the linked targets (Di Maria, Vidal and Hummels) are ridiculously unlikely. So who is next?

I do expect us to sign Vermaelen for a lot of money given his contract status, his injury record, his ability (... I'm not a fan of this signing...) as we clearly need a centre-back and his is the most realistic link. I'd support signing De Jong despite not liking him as I accept we need someone in his mould - but will we actually go for him?

If Fergie were still in charge then I'd expect us to sign Cavani despite all logic saying it would be a crazy move, but with LVG's comments on the ridiculously unbalanced squad we have now, then I doubt that will materialise (but if we are obsessed with making a "marquee" signing then the rumours have been there for a while now).

I'm a little surprised we haven't brought in some more low key signings with potential - either for the first team or a Varela type signing, since I'd expect those to have been done by now. But there's already a lot in the reserves for LVG for get a handle on I guess.

I think we'll bring in Vermaelen and then that will be it at this stage, but we shall see.

Herrera happened out of no where, so perhaps something similar.

What is clear is that the press have no idea who our targets are. We're not feeding them anything anymore.

That's why it makes me laugh when everyone says we have no chance on the basis of the press not reporting it. The club are clearly not briefing them like last summer.

Anyone else starting to get a bit twitchy about the defence?

They're no way on Gods green earth that those 3 will stay fit all season and apart from Vermaelen I don't see any credible stories linking us to anyone.

I would de sad to see Kagawa leave unless in exchange for Hummels(unlikely!). Still think he has more potential but somehow he misses the final product.

Heard we will max sign 2 more players. Hopefully Vidal and a CB who is not Vermaelen

The latest comments by LvG to me seem to be hinting towards not much transfer activity in this window.
He said that he will not buy players for the sake of it, he will only bring in to improve.(Seems like an excuse)
He said that the system he is playing is based on the players he has. He also seems to be sticking with the system. Hence it is a possibility that he feels we might not get the kind of players he wants and has decided to make do with what he has and deal with the imbalance using his formation.
I don't think we will buy too much more in the window. Maybe one signing and there will be no big signings. Sad :-(
Woodward's comments and claims seem quite annoying now.

I'm guessing that Ed is under pressure by the big sponsors to sign a "marquee" player, while LvG is sticking to his principles and philosophy of buying only who he feels will be best for the team, and only when needed. That's why we're getting these conflicting signals from the two.

My gut feel tells me that if Ed and LvG are completely on the same page regarding Vidal, this deal will, or would have been done already. The signs are clear, Juve is prepared to sell if Vidal asks to leave, and if we cough up the cash. Ed can probably cough up the cash, but he'll need LvG's full support to convince Vidal to move.

That's my take, but I'm happy where we are right now. I do think we'll definitely get one or two more players in before the window closes, Vidal or not.

If this theory panned out I'd expect LvG to be the one wanting Vidal but Woodward not seeing him as a big enough deal to pay such a high fee for. Despite how good Vidal is I doubt a box to box CM fits the "marquee" bill the way strikers and #10's do for the marketing people.
