Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

We were in flux last summer and LvG was late getting here due to the World Cup, hopefully our transfer activity is a lot more methodical this summer and done as early as possible.

I actually think what with LvG being so fussy about the tour dates, that everyone will be signed before we leave to go on tour this summer. No last minute stuff, unless something too good to be true becomes available.

It's massive, but not the way we do business. I'd prefer to see us do it the way you suggested, but let's be honest, in the past two years we've bought:

Fellaini: £28m
Mata: £37m
Di Maria: £60m
Shaw: £30m
Herrera: £30m
Rojo: £20m (when you factor in the Nani deal)
Falcao: £16m odd incl. wages
Blind: £14m

for something like £235m and we've ended up with, what? A target man midfielder who is clearly not good enough to start for us and who is currently ahead of our two Spaniard number 10s, who LVG doesbn't really seem to fancy. Di Maria who was overpriced and hasn't adapted well (yet). Shaw who is still learning the game and is appreciably worse than the player he replaced. Rojo who isn't a top class CB, Falcao who's a waste of space and Blind who's a very good player, but unlikely to be a great one. All added to

It's fair to say I don't have much faith in Woodward to suddenly see the light.

You are being too harsh, Rojo looks good Shaw is a great investment, Blind a steady player and Di Maria top notch. Falcao a loan that's not worked out. Mata has been unlucky as in the manager who bought him got sacked. Fellaini is made out to be worse than he is due to his style. We don't need a full new team we just need to start buying smart imo. Bale a Right back and a centre mid will see us challenging.

I don't think I am. Personally I think Rojo looks an accident waiting to happen. I agree on Shaw, but right now he's learning the game in a style he's not equipped for. I like Blind and Di Maria was top notch in Spain, but unless he ups his game considerably he'll be a flop. Fellaini is made out to be worse than he is, but that doesn't mean he should be playing for a side like ours. Mata has been unlucky, but he was also brought in by a manager who seemed to have no idea how to use him, so in that sense I'm not sure a lot has changed.

All of that said, I more or less agree. Buy Bale, Clyne, a top centre half and, say, Pogba, and I think we'd be in the mix. But I don't believe that we'll manage to do that sort of business. I fully expect us to allow ourselves to be led by the nose by agents again.

I'm not convinced on Clyne to be honest I think he's below average on the ball. I could be wrong. I don't think we need a centre back I think Rojo and Smalling could possibly be the answer. Plus I'd rather have Modric than Pogba if I am being honest would make more of an impact, both would be good but Pogba is a great prospect but overhyped at this stage imo (not saying he won't be world class just that he isn't already).

The problem is, what happens when Smalling inevitably picks up his injuries? We need a class, reliable CB in with Smalling battling Rojo for the other CB place.

£150m has to buy you 4 very good players, at least one of them top class, or else you're a fool. You only think that's not much because of how we spend money.

£150m would have got you Fabregas, Costa, Sanchez, Matic and leave about £30m to spare.

£150m is not going to get you 4 great player's guaranteed and cherry picking 4 big successes doesn't really back up your point. How about Torres, Soldado, Lukaku & Mangala? It's more likely with four high value puchases you get someone who fails to live up to his price tag (a Torres, Falcao, Mangala, Soldado type), two player's who don't set the League alight but are first team regulars (Lukaku, Lallana, Ozil, Fernandinho) and if you're lucky one great player (Sanchez, Fabregas, Aguero).

You are much more likely to get a Torres (disaster) or Ozil (acceptable) for £42m - £50m as you are a Sanchez or Aguero. Hummels for instance would cost United around £40m and isn't even slightly a guaranteed success.

I have no idea where anyone could get the idea that a £35-40m player is a guaranteed success. The only guaranteed successes at the moment would either be unattainable, cost £70m+ or only give you a couple of years at that level (Robben, Lahm, Messi, Ronaldo, Bale, Neymar, Suarez, Neuer, Hazard, Iniesta, Toure etc).

I'd like six players brought in, Koke (or Gundogan), Schneiderlin, Hummels, Depay, Clyne and another CF...?

I'd obviously also like players such as Pogba, Reus, Bale, Lewandowski etc but I really don't see it even if we get into CL. Even Koke will be a difficult one I guess.

----------De Gea

---Clyne Hummels Rojo Shaw

------Schneiderlin Blind

-----Di Maria Koke Depay

-----------Rooney

Sell Evans, Rafael, Jones and Nani. Plus I think LvG will off load Mata and possibly RvP.

We won't get Koke. He's very happy at Atletico.

Yes you're probably right...Gundogan then, seems to be over his injury and hitting form again. I'm going to watch the Juventus game later to do some scouting!

I'd still take Vidal in a heartbeat. We don't really need a youngster, we need an experienced pro in the midfield to take over from Carrick when he buggers off. I'd be so happy if we ended up with Hummels as our leader at the back and Vidal for our leader in the middle. Bring in a new RB and one of Depay/Vietto/Dyabla (don't know much of Dyabla though tbh).

The only way Shaw will become a "great investment" is if he ends up becoming one of the best full backs of his generation and that looks a long stretch atm due to his attacking game. Defensively he looks very very good.

I've kind of ignored Vidal after last year to be honest, don't want him becoming another Sneijder.
Great player and still notching goals from midfield this season despite not being in great form due to his injury. Yes I'd also take him in a heart beat.

This could be one of the occasions where LvG's demanding particulars will be to our advantage, early summer business is for the best all round, leave the deadline day stuff to Harry and Big Sam.

i remember the Clyne stories.....to think we spent 15 million on Zaha instead

150 million could do a serious amount of damage and with time on our side I don't expect to see lots of 30/40 million deals

I can see one or two but I could see some other good budget deals

someone like Clyne is going to cost 20 million +

£30m is not going to look a lot of money in 5 seasons imo in transfer fees

I just hope we go for the very top bracket. The sort of players every one is interested.

Pogba would be worth swallowing our pride over. Probably will take a Di Mara type fee though.

You are either on the wind up or deluded!

Just making the point that it might be a more restrained transfer window if we don't get top 4, so a couple of 'frees' might be the way we go, because we still need 5 + players as far as I can see.

What we need:

------------------------DDG-----------------
New RB------New CB-------Rojo------Shaw
----------------New DMC-----Blind---------
Di Maria-----------Rooney--------New Winger
-------------------New Striker---------------

Something like this would be sweet:

De Gea
Rafael Smalling Laporte Shaw
Gundogan Carrick Di Maria
Nani Rooney Depay

I know the jury still is out for Rafael/Smalling/Nani in different ways, but we know how good they can be if it isn't for injurys.

We need Gundogan in our team, he is simply coming back brilliant and there isn't many players with the same ability to dictate a game as his. The rumours about him extending could be true though, but options like Schneiderlin are still there.

Would Dybala or Icardi score more than Rooney if we got them? I have my doubts about that, not sure if there is a striker available that would massively improve us, maybe Lacazette but i haven't really watched him, could be a one season hit.

Hummels is as good as it gets when it comes to passing a ball out from the back, but has he been good enough this season defending wise? Godin would be the best choice, but i doubt he wants to leave Atletico, that leaves us with not many experienced defenders of the required quality, Laporte would be our CB for 10+ years, but we would have to be patient with him of course.

There seems to be a lack of quality wingers which we would be able to snap up in the summer, i really doubt Madrid will let Bale go. Depay is a great talent and he has the hunger to fight for a spot here.

de Gea
Coleman/Clyne Hummels Rojo Shaw
Blind
Herrera di Maria
Nani Rooney Januzaj
I don't think we need much to be honest... Although I'd have Pogba and Depay please and thanks.

After watching two world class teams go at it tonight, we seem miles off them. I would bring in 2 top class centre halves, 1 right back, 2 midfielders and new forward. 6 Players in total. Assuming we get a top 4 spot...

CB- Hummels (£35million)
CB- Godin (£25million)
RB- Coleman (£20million)
CDM- Khedira (Free)
CM- Schniederlin (£25million)
RW- Depay (£15million)
Total Spend- £120million

------------------------------------De Gea--------------------------------------
-----Coleman-----------Godin---------------Hummels------------Shaw------
--------------------------Schniederlin----Khedira-----------------------------
-------------Nani------------------------------------------Di Maria------------
--------------------------Rooney----------------Van Persie----------------------

RVP is only in because I don't think LVG will get rid of him.

I totally agree.

Realistic targets are Clyne, Laporte, Schneiderlin, Depay, Cavani.

Another target might include a goalkeeper.

---------------DDG--------------
Coleman-Hummels-Rojo-Shaw
----------Blind---New CM------
New AM------Mata--------di Maria
------------new Striker---------

Subs:
Januzaj, Fellaini, jones, Valencia, Young, Valdez, Wilson/ RVP

CM looks like it's Strootman, AM has to be world class. So like Bale or Reus. Striker can be anyone with pace. Get rid of Rooney and Falcao and the rest I've not listed. Maybe a backup LB needed too.

Keeping Mata and selling Rooney makes no sense at all. There is no way that LvG would do such a thing.

Strootman is very unlikely because he is yet to prove his fitness, we don't need another Hargreaves.

Forget Europe just now get us Bale Modric and a right back

I know but would rather have Mata than Rooney personally. I'm sick of United being built around Rooney now. We need to move on. But it won't happen.

Gundogen could be a shout for that centre mid position?

like some of your choices but we will surely shift to 4-3-3.

RvP, Falcao, Fellaini, Evans, Smalling, & Hernandez out to get the net spend, and wages down.

We should buy Gundogan. Doesn't look like he's going to sign a new contract with Dortmund. In the season Dortmund got to the CL final, he was the best midfielder in Europe.

Just a shame that he got injured after that. Reminds me of Veron.

Only a year left on his contract. £15mil would do it I think.

5 realistic players we desperatkey need,

Clyne
Hummels
Depay
Dybala
Nainggolan

The muppetry signings,

Bale
Reus

@KiD MoYeS I can't see LvG having a line up with such a lack of physicality and 3 players all known for being rash on the ball.

I also don't get any of the line-ups with Mata over Rooney, not only from the point of view of disagreeing with it as that's just an opinion, but does anyone really think we'll be selling Rooney?

Right back
2 Centre backs
Centre mid
2 wingers
Striker

feck me, how have we spent so much money and our squad still needs so much work? :wenger:

I really think people are overestimating how many players we need. There is absolutely no way we're gonna buy more than 4 first team players in the summer as I see it, and I think 3 is most likely.

We need loads, but you're numbers of what we will actually get are probably about right.
