 you can believe who you want to believe, but some of those French pundits claimed Gourcouff was the next Zidane. The sensible pundits, I have heard says their is a risk and that the one I rather believe than the one who is willing to overhype a player who has yet to accomplish anything noteworthy.

And Gourcuff is extremely talented, he is just the reincarnation of Saha, consistently injured.

And I don't want to argue with anyone on that subject, but Martial scored 15 goals in 75 games and Rooney scored 17 goals in 77 games just before they joined us, it means very little but it's interesting.

John Stones bids rejected at 35 odd million
Sterling for 50
De Bruyne for even more

with this new TV deal next summer is going to be crazy......we will see players like Ross Barkley going for stupid fees like 40/50 million if he has a decent season - its could spiral out of control

for the next 5 years we could well see a bigger proportion best players in the world playing in the Premier League

I think the best thing to do with Martial is just forget the fee.....it's just a random number agreed between two teams

Agree. The media love the headline figure but half the time amounts to complicated add ons based on many mathematical variables that unless he ends up being another Ronaldo, they either never get paid it anyway or if he is, you don't mind paying it cause his value warranted it...

I am capable of formulating an opinion based of pundits who has seen him play regularly and has labelled this deal a gamble. Moreover, even though I m not a supporter of Monaco, I have watched enough games through champion leagues and some games against Lyon, psg and Marseille to assess his talent, amongst other sources like Video analysis.

.

If he can become anything like Saha was (without the injuries) then I really feel it will be a good signing. Louis was so pivotal to our attack for a few seasons. He had pace, silky movement, the vision to split a defense in half and he scored some wonderful goals.

Fantastic striker whose career was devastated by injuries, lightning pace, good finisher and quite strong as well. Perfectly suited to the Premier League but could have had a good career in any European side as well.

I do not know who would be stupid enough to laugh at Rooney then after his accomplishment and performance in the Euros and at Everton, becoming English youngest international to make a debut, winning the young sport personality of the year, and becoming the youngest goal scorer in the history of the Euros. All of this before the age of 19, which says a lot.

Those achievements are based on being the youngest x so of course he did them before the age of 19!

And Ronaldo only scored 5 goals in 31 games before joining us too. After that went on to score 15 goals in his first 90 games for us. Number of goals in early stage of career usually means nothing.

I just cant wait to see him in a red shirt. We signed him at a bad time really because it allows plenty of time for talking, but I think once the games get going he will show us what he's all about.

I do think that if he's played as the leading striker with our passers, he will get plenty of opportunity to use his acceleration to get in behind. He's obviously not going to tear defences apart in the early games but he will give us pace and a work ethic that we need late in games.

I for 1 am not bothered about the price at all. at the end of the day you pay what the club wants, not what a player is worth. I would rather have a talented kid in our squad than 50m in the glazers back pockets.

If our manager were anyone but Van Gaal I'd be salivating. You know the straitjacket is in his locker ready to wear on debut.

Yeah, I mean which youngsters has Van Gaal ever successfully brought through...

I think he's going to lose the ball a lot until he learns and the crowd will get on his back, that's what I partly fear

Martial's game has definately come on from last season based on his game clips on YouTube.

I weren't sure about the transfer before but since seeing videos of him playing against PSG and Valencia this season, I think we made the right move in bringing him in now.

Agreed, at that age stats means nothing.

He's also going to take on and beat players a lot, so I'm sure United fans will be patient. He looks to have excellent close control, pace and strength. Not sure what he's like in terms of movement off the ball but he's got the attributes that United fans get excited about. Hopefully those in the stadium won't just be chatting to each other about how embarrassing the fee is constantly.

I hope his finishing is good, or at least grows noticeably with age. Otherwise we will have years of Welbeck comparisons from ABUs saying we wasted £50mill. Lazy comparison obviously but i do see some of Welbecks style of play in him, the drifting in from the left wing, bursting past players - just Welbecks composure in delivering the final ball or taking a shot was lower league standard. Im sure the club has done its homework like i say.

Moving away from whether he's worth it or not, would anyone start him against Liverpool? I think it would be a bit risky. I remember our last high profile signing that debuted against Liverpool - Berbatov. :nervous:

I'd start him against Liverpool, no doubt.

Him starting should create a nice buzz and atmosphere around OT. Let's smash those cnuts.

I feel it would almost be better if he didn't learn English for a few years as i can see the British press getting on his back from the offset, then 2 years down the line when he's starting to turn into a real player he wont have the listen to the bullshit.

And we lost that game after Tevez gave an early lead, didn't we? Or is it a different game?
I don't think he's gonna start though. Not because he's not ready fitness wise but because he's yet to be hammered into philosophy and learn how to back pass to GK.

Learning the language is more important for settling in the country than on the pitch. He has a wife and kid.

That's the one!

Seriously hope LVG doesn't beat the attacking instincts out of him.

I was always irate that SAF decided to go for Berbatov when we should have gone for signing Tevez permanently. He looks fairly lax with Memphis doing whatever he does though, including taking direct free-kicks from ridiculous distance and shooting when he should be passing back to maintain the ball possession. I assume he gives young player a fair bit of lax in terms of philosophy and tries to improve their consistency. Even McNair at RB was at shooting position couple of times when playing there once last season and none of our regular full-backs play the same way.

feck sake that's a clause activated.

Well he´s gonna make 25 caps, if he Podolskis them. FFF will get 20% from Monaco.

Blatter is still negotiating the Ballon d´Or fee. That one´s gonna take longer, cause Ronaldo´s also putting in a bid.

He looks very, very raw. I'd be amazed if he was bought as a starter with Rooney dropping to 10 as some have been suggesting. I think it's much more likely he's Hernandez replacement as the impact sub with Herrera keeping his spot at 10. He'll probably get a few cameos in the inside right and left positions as a sub but id like to see more of Wilson this season too.

He has a rare combination of pace, strength, aerial threat, touch and incredible close dribbling. I can see why we've taken the risk.

There's no such thing as a teenager who isn't raw, but I think he's relatively mature for his age.

He's not going to be used that as a complete backup. If we've spent that much on him we rate him as a special talent like Shaw, Depay etc. He might not play every game, but he'll definitely start on a rotational basis like Fellaini, Young etc. UNLESS he really struggles to fit in early on. He looks a bit raw, but I doubt he's as raw as someone like Wilson was last season for example, when it genuinely looked like a youth player on the first team stage. This guy has been playing first choice for Monaco and playing huge champions league matches.

After watching youtube videos of him I have come to the conclusion he is better than Messi.

I have a feeling we will use Martial on the flanks with either Depay or Mata as AM

Even after few days, I still can't believe this transfer happened. It's really funny.

So when LVG says he has been watching him for a year, why do you put no faith in his assessment.
I have not seen this guy, certainly never heard of him, but I would rather trust the manager who has watched him, than a pundit who probably has no real stake. Wenger feels he is talented, the manager of the French national team obviously sees something in him or he would not get near the first team.
Remember when United bought Ronaldo, I bet nobody heard of him.in the caf. It was a risk worth taking. Why can't this guy be the same.

Just wondering; do you think monaco would agree to balon d'or terms if they didn't thibk the guy had a chance to win it? Thoughts?

Especially in the next four years. Considering Messi will be around for another 2/3 years, and Neymar will only be 27 in 4 years time, he will need to be Amazing for us to stand a chance at winning it.

And that 25 goals clause doesn't make sense either, surely he will get that in 4 years with relative ease! Im sure the clause is him scoring 25 goals in a single season rather than 25 goals over 4 years.

Well that would be depressing. I only have hopes for a top 4 finish this season so I really hope we let Martial and Depay play where they seem to be best at. Rooney is nearly 30....stop catering to that old useless player

I say our attack struggles down to mata playing on the right. Theres just no pace on that side & Darmian really does have to watch his back on that side.

This makes it easier to mark depay because the opposition defence plays very lopsided when in fact we should be stretching them while flattening them out.

From what i've seen of martial; he drifts to the left, so in theory- him playing on the right should make him a better player centrally because it sorts out the major weakness in his game.

As for Rooney up front; mata could then play behind him and it should help him out alot.

Next season; martial should then be able to lead the line with an ability to drift left or right dependant on which winger (depay or new RW) drifts inwards.
