Manchester United - January transfer window 2015 (twitter blacklist applies)

So even though he was worth £50 million at most, went for £75m and some how has done enough to be worth £90 million now?

You say that like 'of course not' to not needlessly get your hopes up but you are really thinking 'this could happen'. Am I right?

No, it's complete and utter bollocks! If you were to waste your time by reading that nonsense, you would see that the person writing it knows it's bollocks too.

It's the Express, they make EVERYTHING up!

Gaz thinks we will definitely buy again in January, it will be interesting to see what LvG does, I can't see him not buying a CB but it's which foot he'll be after, not sure if he feels Smalling and Jones have the right footed side covered and may favour competition for Rojo.

I still feel we will add at least one top CM to our ranks over the next two windows but it might be difficult i January, the only one I think would definitely be available is Schniederlin who is not world class but still only young and proven in the PL.

I remember neville saying a couple of times at the weekend that lvg has been surprised by the physicality of the premier league (and presumably neville still has the contacts to be close enough to know things like that... Giggs etc)
Sadly I don't think pogba will come back but perhaps carvahllo could be an option to add that strength? Plus he might be available with the right bid in jan?

Nani direct swap? He's lighting up the Portuguese league at the moment.

I'm sure they would want some money on top
Apparently they wanted £30m+ in the summer
But nani plus cash or better still nani plus anderson plus less cash might be tempting

Sorted so Carvalho, Reus and a CB between now and next summer.

Haven't seen all that much of Carvahlo but would definitely prefer that sort of player over someone like Strootman (who would surely manage to make our midfield even less balanced if he replaced Blind).

Not sure why we need to sign Reus given how top heavy we are but whatever.

CB is the most difficult and important position we need to fill. Can't think of any likely candidates who'll do the job though....

Rudiger would do nicely... Young, tall and strong
Certainly would add physicality and height to the back line.

We have enough young defenders though, we could do with the finished article with good leadership.. Buy back Vidic :nervous:

I agree with the finished article idea. No more testing and trying. Get a damn decent CB who's established and very good.

Im not sure any of our centrebacks would get in the Germany team though and he has 4 caps at 21 years of age
I think he is good now... His age is a bonus
His physical presence would also be good imo

Rüdiger is not that great yet tbh. There are other CB's in Germany who are more talented or simply better than him. He played a few games for our National team at right back but it was more or less an experiment from Löw.

Ideally we would add 1-2 players in January but I don’t see much happening, a CB would be great but it’s hard to see who is available as we need someone to step straight in not another youngster, Vertonghen is out of favour at Spurs is someone I could see LVG going for considering our interest in Vermaelen. Carvalho is only other player I could see coming in who would be a first team player but he is likely to be very expensive. The summer window is going to be very busy again with a fair few in and even more leaving.

What I would like to see us do in January is start addressing our long term transfer strategy by signing a couple of youngsters who we can either loan out or integrate into the squad next season. We are a bit lacking there as Moyes didn’t sign any young players and I think SAF’s last few buys like Powell, Zaha and Henriquez are all heading for the exit door. There are plenty of good players with potential around like Tielemans, Sinkgraven, Bakkali, Odegaard etc etc, obviously picking the right ones isn’t easy and there are a lot of players out there who are hyped up too much but it’s worth the risk.

Read a rumour on a Dutch site that we were interested in Terrence Kongolo. 20 year old Center Back who currently plays for Feyenoord. Supposedly he's around 4 mil. Made it into the Dutch selection for the World Cup, but that's not saying much considering how few backs there are in the Netherlands. Fun fact, his younger brother is in the City academy. Thoughts?

I think my pipe dream, of Thiago Silva or Godin is done, if we get experience it will be Vlaar or maybe even Garay. If LvG wants to go juicy though then Laporte looks the best option and would provide competition for Rojo in the left CB spot.

We really need a defender who is capable of playing more than 1 game in a row.

I suppose if mangala cost £32m then it's a bargain...

He's certainly more talented than Mangala. Don't get me wrong, I find these fees especially for young players ridiculous, then again it's how the market operates these days or for some time now.

Not sure how accurate it is but wiki says his contract is till 2016 and has a €27.5m buy out clause which is just under £22m... That seems like a decent price in the current market

Probably hasn't been updated. He signed a new contract in the summer, increasing his release clause and running till 2018.

Fair enough
As hummles, silva, varane, kompany and benaita don't seem to be on the market I guess there is an argument to say if you cant buy the best go and buy the up and coming players who could be the best.
Ginther went in the summer so stones martinez Laporte and Rudiger would be the ones I would be most interested in
Having said that a settled Jones Rojo partnership if they stay fit might make us think we don't need anyone else with smalling and Evans as back up

Given the injury records of Smalling, Evans and Jones, another CB being added to the squad in either January or the summer is an absolute certainty. Ideally someone experienced, physical, and decent in the air.

That's the thing though. I don't trust Jones, Evans and Smalling to stay fit anymore. I'd definitely bring in one centre-half and Laporte is the best one potentially available. Rojo and Laporte for the left-sided centre-half position and Jones, Smalling and Evans can compete for the right-sided position. If the injuries of Smalling, Jones and Evans persist then get rid. I'm sick of it.

Its not that we need another one, we just need different ones. 4 centre backs is usually the perfect amount, its just that 3 of our 4 are injury prone. I wouldn't be against an overhaul, getting rid of 2 of them and keeping just one of the injury prone players. Maybe sell evans /smalling if the injuries persist and bring in a younger promising defender like stones and then one experienced centre back who will stay fit. Would give us a better set up.

I don't trust Jones/Smalling/Evans to stay fit for the rest of the season but I'm not ready to give up hope on Jones and Smalling for the long run.

Pick up Vlaar in January to deal with the CB problem while Jones and Smalling escape from this horrid injury plague at this point in their careers. Go with Laporte is money is no object and if in fact we've given up on two of Jones/Smalling/Evans.

Then, to complete the squad we go back to Vidal. He ticks all the boxes, including the leadership box that neither Herrera nor Blind just won't give us.

Herrera hasn't been that long with us and you've already decided that he isn't a leader? Weird. I've seen him plenty of times being very vocal towards the other players and he's definitely one that can grow into the role. And just let Vidal go, especially after he has committed himself to Juventus. I'd rather get Schneiderlin and Strootman.

A) Vlaar is currently suffering from injury problems too, which isn't what we need from a new signing.
B) As bucky said, Herrera has only just arrived and had a reputation for being a leader at his previous clubs. I remember some journalists (probably Lowe or Hunter) describing him as a potential future captain for us back when we were linked with him last year.

RCB - Smalling/Jones/McNair
LCB - Rojo/Laporte/Blackett

That looks decent to me.

That RCB is questionable. Two that spend most of the time injured together and one kid that has it all to prove.
