Manchester United announce TeamViewer as shirt sponsor

Football fans are not the only one who advertisers are targeting. You have billboard on which players have their jersey on and you have people wearing them on streets. It's called brand awareness. For a club like United, this spreads to every continent. If you can't understand the reason why someone would pay money for such wider reach then maybe advertising isn't for you.

People will recognise Team Viewer more than they do now. It's the easiest way to get more people aware of your product. My friend who doesn't even follow United saw the headline and texted me to know what this was all about. I am sure there are millions who became aware of this company overnight.

Saying outside of football no one cares is bit dumb. Manchester United is humongous brand and football is followed by billions. That's wide enough audience to target.

As a United fan, don't care as long as they pay us good money. Some of the reaction here is bit over the top. It's almost as if they want the club to fail.

Very well explained.

It's fine.

If I'm going to buy a United shirt, it's not because it looks good. It's because I'm a United fan. If we're being honest, no football shirt actually looks good compared to, say, a designer polo-shirt.

They're a functional garment that fans then choose to wear to show off their allegiance. This one will be about as good as any other. Short of displaying a swastika or something, that was always going to be case.

How are people kicking off already without even seeing it on a shirt?! They’re clearly paying us the most money of all the potential shirt sponsors..

This forum is so fecking negative.. about everything

Something simple like this would be a massive improvement on the Chevy logo.

Yeah, I really like the look of that. I think my only complaint is that their logo would look a bit off.

I'm surprised by some of the negative reaction on here tbh. It could have been so much worse plus they're paying well, which should indirectly help strengthen the squad.

The Training Kit Deal would have to be roughly £30-40m a year to make us whole.

Chevy and Aon is somewhere in the region of £70-80m.
I understand and what I'm trying, badly, to explain is that as a stand alone deal, it is one of the best in the World, the best in the league according to Whitwell. Let's wait until we have the big picture before we complain. We can bash the club for a lot of things but one thing they are exceptional at is business deals. They know what they are doing here as proven by this deal being "best in class" .

It's a little funny just how many people don't get the difference between this deal, and deals before. "Shirt Only" is a big hint.

Don't let the losers drag you down!

100% it is meant to be worn by footballers. So it would be great if 45 year old men could stop walking around the town with their belly hanging out the bottom of it. Also there is no huge design and fashion following in football kits, Adidas and Nike produce a template every year and colour in the sections after for all their teams. It's not fashionable clothing and it shouldn't be worn on any but the occasions of actually playing football as an adult. 99% of football kits looks vile no matter the sponsor.
That's crap. Football shirts and their cuts are most definitely fashionable. Loads of brands have their own iterations of football shirts at the moment (YMC, Palace, Stussy to name a few examples - basically every 'cool' brand is doing it). PSG made a huge deal with Nike Jordan, and retro/vintage football shirts has become a massive market. It's why lots of teams do wacky, zany designs in an attempt to tap into the booming cultural zeitgeist. Arsenal shirts nowadays are just slightly updated versions of their classic SEGA ones. You see loads of people wearing them around North London. Shit, we did one with Pharrell Williams!

They’re not , they had bigger offers which we turned down as this suits Utd better apparently .

It's better than the Chevrolet logo. But so is anything.

I didn’t say it wasn’t a good deal. I said it was safe to assume it was less than we got previously. Which it is. Which that article confirms.
I'm pretty sure the deal wasn't worth £64m a year. It rose incrementally over the course of the deal, meaning it averaged out at around £55m. Having freed up dug out and automobile sponsorship, we've got every chance of increasing our overall revenue.

Great for the transfer business. Woodward can go around the internet scamming people, introducing himself as "Ed from Microsoft", asking people to PayPal money to Dortmund before he can help them decrypt their hard drive.

The people saying it’s not as good as the Chevy deal have to remember the guy who struck that deal on their end was sacked for it due to it being so generous to us.
Thats right. we wouildnt have got nowhere near that deal if he hadnt fecked up, so that deal was an anomoly in the first place and as Utd are father away from being a top team than we were then, this deal we have got is excellent for the glazer. Wonder how much we will get for new signings :(

Then you dont understand the deals..

The one with Chevrolet is a shirt AND car sponsor.

The TeamViewer one is JUST a shirt sponsor.

We can now have a separate car sponsor.

And in fairness, that could and will most likely give us more sponsor money in total.

You have to consider the whole deal when comparing them. I dont get the whining on here... Its absurd

Then you can’t understand the article you posted yourself. It specifically mentions a car sponsor deal making up the deficit. You understand what that means don’t you? It speculates that a new car sponsor would still leave it shy of what it was before. Guess I don’t need to guess again.

In the grand scheme of things it’s a good deal in the current environment. Doesn’t mean I was wrong in my assumption and all you’ve done is prove I wasn’t.

The number in the article is waaay out.

They barely have a Wikipedia page, how the f did they get this deal with the money involved? Such a weird one.

They reported an annual pre-tax profit of €170m on revenue of €455m in 2020, so they are not exactly a huge company. They have also said that this deal will result in a "significant increase in marketing expenditure” and guided that their profitability will be hit as a result.

Their share price fell 14% yesterday following this news.

It is still a hefty chunk to add to their €34m advertising costs. Advertising costs of €88m if you add in Manutd. Put that in comparison to €400m revenue and it does seem pretty risky.

Whether it is worth it will be found out in the future, but I don't see what they do as something people will really be interested in. It seems most suitable to remote IT maintenance work, which is hardly a mainstream thing.

They aren't scamming us are they?

Advertising does work. I remember a lecturer specifically explaining that to us.

Exactly my point. They are NOT in a retail or mainstream business. They are a niche tech company, pretty bad one at that with huge competition in their domain. Everyone in the business knows to avoid Team Viewer. No wonder their share fell after the release of this news. I would not be surprised if someone gets fired for this ..

For us, this feels like a decent stopgap deal under the circumstances. I would think we have some kind of "early exit" clause in the contract though.

On the surface this looks a desperate move by United, TeamViewer is pretty small time. But given our performance on the field and pandemic, its probably the best case scenario. Not sure what TeamViewer gets out of it really. Its a software platform, not sure how United makes it worth it for them. There is a bunch of similar crapware floating around.

Desperate move? Don’t you largely just take the biggest offer?

I’m glad the club wouldn’t entertain offers from betting companies.

I despise the leaching b@stards. Ruin people’s lives and it’s plastered over everything. I would ban gambling tomorrow if I could.

What an odd thing to say. If you're irresponsible and can't bet as much as you can afford to lose, why punish the rest who can control themselves? I'm glad more areas of the world are making gambling legal.

The more gambling the better.

Haha you obviously have never been in marketing or branding business. You think if Pr0nhub offered United more money they could just take it?
Brands want to associated themselves with other reputed brands. TeamViewer is junk.

Yeah, but that part goes without saying. It’s why I said ‘largely take the best offer’. If teamviewer offered more than say Microsoft or Apple or whatever why would you turn it down.

How is it desperate? It looks a remarkable deal to me in the current economic crisis.

Why exit clause? If they pay us why do you bother who they are? They aren't terrorist organisation. Some way over the reaction here just because it's not some hot shot company that looks cool. Seems like it's personal for you against this company.

It's not decent deal, it's fantastic deal in Covid climate.

No real idea about the company itself, but I'm assuming that it will be exactly like shown on the official website (Logo above the name in text). Provided the colour can be changed to a solid colour like white or black to actually fit with the shirt colours, it will be a big improvement.

Yikes, that's a huge drop. I guess the spin that Woodward is some commercial magician can be parked today.
Guess rona didn't help, but isn't that a "shirt only" deal whereas Chevy have had broader "placement" and contract role?

I say whatever brings money to fund our Haalands. When it comes to aesthetics I think it will look better than ugly gradient chevy logo as it's more simplified. What looks weird now will be completely normal once we play few games in it. People just get used to it very quickly.

Just wonder if they use the white version of the logo for better contrast because the blue on red is not the best combination when it comes to visibility.

Aye. His sources are himself. Genuinely the most negative feck to cover United. I swear he has a few accounts on here

Couldn’t agree more. Given our wins against City, West Ham and Milan, he has been a little rattled so came out with this amazing theory. I almost choked on my food.

His new theory is that Ole can’t help Man Utd do better because as a player he was happy to be a substitute. I swear the crap these guys say and are paid to say it.
