Manchester United 2:2 Steven Gerrard's Villa (Sat 23rd July, 10:45 UK time)

I know its only pre-season but I'm getting these weird feelings of looking forward to watching United games. There were times last season when I'd be watching from behind the sofa like watching Doctor Who and the Daleks. But I'm getting kind of excited about the coming season. Do I need professional help?
Me too. Delaying plans to watch the game this morning whereas recent seasons I’ve not been arsed one bit about missing them. The ETH factor.

Not really, they probably booed because they were sick of the crap performances for the past year and the only time they same him in person he still messed up.

Now if a player had a few bad games in 12 months booing him would be premature and a cause could be made for calling those supporters bellends.

Could be argued that the apathetic ans have allowed mediocrity to fester in this club, which would then make them fake fans no?

Booing is a result of continuous poor performances and the supporters having a enough so showing their anger by booing - player performs well then there will he no boos.

I remember Nani being booed at OT and THAT was harsh, not the booing of Maguire.
Nani had been poor and Maguire has been poor. Either it's ok to boo both or none.

During pre-season preparations for a completely new season? Ten Hag's answer was brilliant because Maguire is in control of only one thing, his performances. If he sorts that, everything follows.

However, that doesn't mean it's not extremely idiotic to boo a guy during a pre-season tour for his performances last season where almost every player was poor - particularly considering it wasn't like he wasn't trying. One would have to be a really sad, bitter individual to participate in that.

It's a new managerial era, the team is trying to build positivity and forget the toxicity of the past, and some folks think it's a good idea to bring all that back? Read the room folks - Absolutely mental :wenger:

Wouldn't surprise me if some of them asked him for selfies at the end of the game.
Nah, there are no excuses to boo your captain in preseason game based on performances from last season, it is just idiotic.
Spot on.

Especially when the whole squad was shite and player is trying his best and never said a bad thing about the club. This is all about "fans" putting their own egos before the club.

It's a sorry sight when Aston Villa arguably have a better midfield than Manchester United. Fortunately that front three should be too much of a handful for their backline, but we're also desperately thin there and can't afford any injuries.

If anyone gets a “river” I’d love a PM

signed up for MUTV and paid, but it’s had technical errors they can’t fix, so I’ve missed every game and paid for nothing. So I feel morally okay using a river

Nonsense. Nani was booed for a very specific action. Walking off slowly when he was subbed in a game where time was running out and we needed a goal. That was the one and only time it happened.

Maguire was being booed every time he touched the ball, irrespective of what he was doing on the day. Completely different scenarios.

  Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

I'm playing devil's advocate here, and you're obviously showing your biases on how to be a fan, you're very narrow minded.

@Catt it was okay to boo Nani, I just said it was harsh? So yes, it's okay to do both.

A supporter can do whatever they want, I won't call other fans they're fake if they choose to boo or not, it's stupid and scream "I'm a top red, do as I do or you're not a real fan" - it makes said person even more of a bellend than those that choose to boo after 1 bad game to be fair (not sure any fan has ever booed a player after one bad game).

On a side note, is it okay to criticise that player, is it just the act of booing that makes you a fake fan, or criticism in general?

But you will go around calling other fans top reds?

I still consider booing Nani as harsh.

And that's your view, which you're completely entitled to, but Maguire has performed terribly over the season, and the fans in the stadium booed him because of that.

I just don't like supporters calling other supporters fake fans, it's stupid and where does it end? Even in your post you said it was fine to boo at one point but not another? Do we, as supporters come up with guidelines on how to support the club, and if you deviate you're no longer a "real" fan?

Basically, yes. They’re unwritten but they’ve always been there and they’re obvious.

All the talk of booing makes me laugh. It's ultimately harmless and criticism is part and parcel of being in any very well paid and high profile job. Get over it already and quit using it as an excuse to jump on your high horses

Well then we agree ti disagree, choosing at what point to boo a player is subjective - its like saying you can't get angry until a certain point, everyone has different thresholds.

If anyone is looking for a river, PM me and I’ll show you an example of one that is completely unacceptable and one which I do not endorse at all ;)

United fans should boo every player, all the time. It'll force all of them to play better.

Anyone with a river, please message. I AM AT A WEDDING AND CANT USE THE VIRGIN APP.

Hate virgin so much.

Well said. Won't go down well with the "they're not real fans" brigade from the previous match thread but this is the reality.

All the way from fellaini to now Maguire booing your own players is just bellend behaviour.

Trying to get the stream going on my apple TV app but whenever I press the live button I just get the same 15-second loop going. Anyone know what the problem is? Working fine on my computer.

Apple TV doesn’t always play paid to air services. It could be that.

This Villa XI looks no worse than ours on paper.

Booing an individual player based on a previous match is pathetic (if your team). Booing a team performance after they all play dog shit is fine. But they're human beings. Booing or whistling someone on your own team is always dumb and ok maybe not fake fan, but shit fan 100
