Manchester United 0:1 Atletico Madrid (Sat 30th July, 12:45 UK time)

Matchday thread. Typical! Should not have expected any better.

This one was supposed to be a mere pre season match.

Vultures are out in force though to pollute my enjoyment of the match.

It’s a friendly. We once beat Madrid, Barca and all in the same summer and followed up with a loss to Swansea. These games are about fitness.
Not really.

Under Mourinho, Ole it may be the case. Under LVG, and ETH it's clearly that they drill the team with a system. It needs to click the earlier the better.

Under LVG we made the most of the advantage our early preseason because we still had better quality players. This game just 8 days away from our PL opening, and with most starters, we don't have the quality needed to show how much the gap in term of preseason fitness progress.

Ronaldo would have at least scored one goal. Feck. I think we still need him due to how bad our forwards are at being clinical.

We need at least on more forward. We have lost MG, at least who knows what will happen with him, and Ronaldo we can’t trust. So yeah, we are short in that area.

His usual form ? Martial didn’t score but was very good when he was on the ball it’s not easy to play with players that isn’t looking for link ups and a midfield that don’t progress the ball between the lines. Elanga doing to much on the ball and Bruno missplacing a lot of passes come on Martial missed a chance very early in the game that he should of scored but except of that he showed good play with the back against the goal, showed some nice technical ability and is always passing the ball without missplacing passes.
Don't make out he's some type of top striker, he failed at utd and Seville, he's just not good enough and he's proved this time after time, How much longer do you want to give him seeing as it's his 6th season now?

They're all out to get you!

Well, the best chance I saw fell to a defender: Maguire, who really should have scored. The chance for Martial in the first half was a foul on him in my opinion. The referee did nothing to curtail the Athleti shithousery.

Good, tough game against a top side. We needed that and I'd say we came out with heads held high, never mind the result. In a way, I'm happy with the loss too. The team need to deal with adversity at some point before the season starts. Looking forward to next weekend!

Maguire chance came from set piece, which Ronaldo is still one of the most dangerous set piece attacker. He's likely get himself in this kind of position and likely score.

When he's going to give us a goal from a set piece ? FFS

Had Sancho and Shaw been available I think we would have won that game, if pre-season has shown me anything, it's t that drop-off from the first team established regulars to the "fringe player" is steep.
We didn't miss Shaw at all, imo.

Ah yes! Van Gaal's first pre season in charge - I remember it well.

Looked totally unstoppable, won all our games against quality opposition then lost 1-2 against Swansea in our first game of the season - typical!

Not impressed. No complaints about ETH, it's clear what he's trying to do, but our players just aren't good enough. No top 4 this season without two or three new signings.

Lost again? This is beyond pathetic now. Do the players think the job is done after beating Liverpool and the mighty Melbourne Victory? It'll be Hopelesschester United again the whole of next season ffs. Fraud Ten Hag etc.

Not really

You first, but I should’ve known better going round for round with a McFred apologist. You boys are tiresome.
So correcting uninformed clowns makes me a McFred apologist? You're just making more things up, like that phantom suspension Fred is apparently getting.

Nah mate, I'm talking about the result.
This is Atletico madrid, they don't care how do you play. Sithousering, score a half chance, pack up and go home. It's exact the same as last season at Old Trafford.

I know the differences are there. But as long as Rashford, Martial, Sancho can't bury half-chances, as long as our midfield keep losing their focus as the game goes on, as long as defenders keep making mistakes. The result will be always the same.

This is not a criticism toward ETH, I'm just done with giving some of these players clean plate. The only reason they're still here is because of United' incompetence.
100%.

We have to score the chances we get and hold it together for 90 mins. These boys don’t seem to be up to it. There’s time, of course, but some of these guys are old dogs when it comes to improving; I don’t think many of them can get to where they need to be.

There's a shed load of supporters out there probably thinking this right now

I do have to say though, this is the first strong opposition we have come across (Liverpool we’re very unfit and played 3 different teams) and we’ve lost, take of that what you will.

Our midfield is not up to standard.
It was only Eriksen who showed ideas and calm class.

Went from victim to name calling in the span of two posts. Kudos. Perhaps you’ll get your wish and see McFred after all next weekend stinking up the midfield. Hold your breath until then.

Based on pre-season, we really really missed Sancho.

Despite his output last season, it looks like he's going to be central to everything good about this team under EtH this season.

Need to follow your own advice and take a deep breath to calm down. At least you're coming round to the idea that he isn't suspended. It only took you a few hours.

If we had Felix class in attack, we’d have won the game. Sadly, we don’t.

Just compare two years ago' starting lineup and today'.
It's the same 10 + Malacia and you expected different result ?
Yes. Because we have different coach, and young players are supposedly improved in 2 years.

Again, hold your breath for me mate. You may be right after all! Just most of us could use a break from that lot.

Need a midfielder before Brighton, maybe we should check out the local auctions will take any at this point

How was that awful :wenger:.

If we played a top Atletico-side - agreed. But we played a Atletico-side who are several weeks behind us in preperation. They are at the level we were when we played Melbourne. We should be several levels above them in fitness and intensity - it didn't show and we lost to them. To me - .that is a concern

There are actually a lot of positives from this game despite the loss.

1. Fred can actually play the DM role. He looked really good today playing the role, both in the build up and defensively, which is really good for us. It means he will get a lot of games for us regardless of whether he remains a starter or not this season. It's also fantastic for his potential career progression. It means we can start the season with him in that role without losing too much traction in midfield. That way we can get the right player for the role on a more permanent basis with a capable backup already here.

2. Dalot looked very good as well and has looked good this preseason. His touch is excellent at the moment and that bodes well for us at full back.

3. Malacia also looked really good. Great signing as Shaw's injury record isn't great and he can turn shaw into our back up.

4. Rashford's touch looked really good, hopefully he's getting back to something like he was in 19/20

5. Eriksen fits this team. I can see a lot of creativity in the team with Sancho Bruno and him, which bodes well for us.

We also have Martinez still to come that will additionally help our build up, which was actually good today.

VDB still looks ineffective, Lindelof is clearly not a starter for us, Mctominay is still pretty poor and we got exposed at our lack of depth in attack today. That is a cause for concern, a massive opportunity for some of our youngsters who I'm guessing will play tommorow. I don't think we can pull of two attacking signings, even if Ronaldo leaves. I do think we need it though, for depth and competition.

Gonna be a long tough season.

A week or so ago I was licking my lips at the thought of getting revenge against Brighton, but now it looks increasingly like a tough battle to get a result against a side who are roughly our equals at worst. The very lacking transfer business. another failure to keep a clean sheet, and a familiarly sterile attack all have put my spirits in check.

Ten Hag needs some early results, regardless of largely having made a good impression so far, or this could get ugly quick at that Liverpool match. A home loss to Liverpool, after a couple of disappointments in winnable games, whilst still looking adrift in the transfer market chasing De Jong wouldn’t be a good start.

Not to mention that we played our best possible team and for how many minutes can we say the same about them?

Same game, googled it, Vs Porto they were allowed to play the first then suspended for the next 3
That was an FA Special, where it's one rule for United and one for literally everyone else. As far as I know, the only time the FA have ever enforced (made up) that rule.

In the first half, a couple times when Martial had the ball in their box and chose to shoot, Bruno moaned at him when he missed, gesturing that Martial should have played it back to him. Both times, Bruno was marked and passing to him was not a good option. I think playing with Bruno is a blessing and a curse for the other players cuz they have to be mentally strong enough to just tell Bruno no when he demands the ball in a bad position. Bruno wants the ball at all times no matter where he is or who's marking him.

To be fair, Pellestri could of laid it off to Bruno for an easier opportunity in the second half. But agree he needs to calm it down on some occasions.
