Manchester United 0:1 Atletico Madrid (Sat 30th July, 12:45 UK time)

Very worrying. Not hopefully at all for the season, I think 5th at best.

Maguire had a very good game. I know it’s the in thing to shit on him but you have to give credit where credit is due.

And the credit is?

That's not a very good game.
It was an okay game.

Missing an open goal header from 2 yards is what makes 0 points into 3 points and that's what makes title contenders.

One good clearence from a Griezmann chance.
Couple of poor offside traps.
Also glaring issues of his speed.
He's slow as feck.

How? We’ve went for and attained 99% of ETH’s Targets. How is that letting him down?
We sold Pereira and got Malacia at the same price.
We got Eriksen on a free.
We got Martinez ONLY - that's all.
BIG DEAL!

Decent workout overall. They pushed us hard and they're just about the best around at disrupting their opponent's game plan, I think it was exactly the kind of opposition we needed. Not every team will just sit and let us play around them. Didn't really handle it as well as we'd want to, but I thought we still showed some decent ball progression as we came out of defence, even if we lacked any cutting edge up front.

I know some people will be leaping off cliffs at the first sign of a bad result, but if you take the starting point that we were the 6th best team in the league last year and that it will take a season at least to get into a sustained top gear, I still think the pre-season as a whole and this match in particular showed decent signs of progress.

I don't think you understand the point of pre-season.

I think I do. Fergie would not have been fine if we were getting such result anyhow this close to the beginning of the campaign, especially when the Community Shield was around the corner for most of the 1993-2013 period.

Who is that annoying presenter on MUTV? Distracted by what's going on off camera like a hyper teenager and has just asked Sammy what's more important tomorrows game or Brighton next Sunday..

I am starting to seriously wonder how some of the "fans" here managed to get full member status. Their reactions to pre-season are as if we are going to get relegated next season.

So we are backing him though, no? We're desperately trying to land FDJ and Antony in the mean time.

Apart from ignoring the folks ETH want and going off and buying some other folks, not sure what more the management can do

Some utterly bizarre overreactions here. We played well, outplayed Atletico for the most part, and deserved to win really. No one should care about pre-season results, it's all about fitness levels and getting in tune with the manager demands and new playing style.

I agree we need additional reinforcements, but this is not something that we've just realised.

The credit is that defensively he was solid today. That’s his main job. He dealt with a 1v1 situation well, had that interception from Griezmann, made some good passes out from the back that went on to form an attack and was positionally pretty good for headed clearances.

What about Martials chance? What about Elangas chance from the cross? Yet Maguire gets the brunt of why we won’t be title contenders for a bad miss in 1 pre-season game? C’mon man

I do agree he’s slow as feck though, that I cannot defend.

The match is a fair reflection of our level right now, as I see it. Martial missing two big chances and we are having problems scoring goals. We needed a striker when last season ended, and that has not changed.

We have lost more games in pre-season during the 2010-11 season and even the last game against Juventus. Yet we won the EPL and were UCL finalists. Fergie isn't the type to overreact in pre-season and he has been known to experiment with the players during pre-season games. Its all about match fitness rather than precision.

Oh were they? Do tell me what his others are? Didn’t know you were part of the recruitment team

It's being reported everywhere that De Jong and Antony are wanted.
Nunez chose Liverpool over us. Reliable reporters have all said that those 3 were his priorities.
Even Timber was our priority defensive target, again widely reported by credible journalists.

The board haven't delivered.

Any chance of fred being banned for the first game after red card?
Only joking but I remember SAF going bonkers after learning Scholes was banned for being sent off in a friendly

Surely, you're not basing this on this game and the pre-season?
Im not worried about the manager as you can see what he is trying to done, but we are woefully short in terms of quality in the squad. I'm basing it on what I am seeing. If that is the expected performance level this season, then we finish no higher than 6th again. We need at least 3 new players, allowing for Sancho to come back in and assuming Martinez is a player. Honestly I fear for us - the club need to wake up..

Atletico Madrid is a far more settled team than we currently are - and I think that showed. But overall we did fairly well I'd say. 2nd half wasn't the best display but we'll move on and take the positives out of the performance.

I'm sure EtH won't be happy with aspects of the performance. However, winning every pre-season game and scoring lots of goals doesn't mean you're going to have a good season.

This was a tough test in the heat against a good team of shithouses who made a lot more changes than us. Today's game was about most of the 1st XI getting 90 minutes before the Brighton game and we were the better team for the most part.

Would your opinion be different if Maguire's header or Pellestri's shot went in and Felix fluffed his?

We actually played well...I would take the way we lost over anything under ole. We literally moved the ball well enough to create good opportunities against an ultra defensive side. Our problem today was fred, he isnt a very good dm...so we need help in that area

I think you missed what I was responding to (highlighted) on your post ..

Good business for the Glazers

Hence why I said 99%

Still time to get Antony and FDJ. Ajax want 100M for Antony and Barca are being awful to work with. We have had a bid accepted by Barca for FDJ by the way. At least a month ago.

What’s the issue here?
You said we attained 99%, that's past tense. I'm not certain if English is your first language, but that's a really key part of what you said.

Went for:
Timber
Antony
Martinez
de Jong
Malacia
Eriksen

Attained:
Martinez
Malacia
Eriksen

That's 50% attained. To be fair, we don't even know if he had other targets that we have not went for, it's massively speculative. But 99% is very, very, very far off on the math for "attained 99% of ETH's targets".

Elanga is the number one player who literally gives the ball away every single time but no stats are ever shared after the game. He is so so bad, its not even a joke. He cant hold up, he cant pass, he cant dribble and his decision making is terrible. I dont think he will make it at manutd long term...he has foundational deficiencies in his game...the type that need years to fix. I would take playing an extra midfielder over elanga...horrible player

I agree, I can't see Elanga as Utd player. He's very poor on the ball and can't pass properly. Even we don't have a right wing, I rather put Bruno as RW and Eriksen taking Bruno role. Let's see what Ajax wants to Antony.

We will fight for 5’th and 6’th with Chelsea. While Arsenal and Tottenham are progressing, we are hardly moving.

Just compare two years ago' starting lineup and today'.
It's the same 10 + Malacia and you expected different result ?

Martial back to his usual form against a decent team, if ronny goes we have rasford and martial to rely on
