I really really admire how he pretty much came back from the dead to perform at a high level again.

Dude had the worst season of his career, became an internet meme, the who world was laughing at him, and losing the captaincy was the icing on the cake. A complete and utter humiliation.

Somehow he managed to silence the background noise, and just focus on getting better.

I don't think he'll necessary be a regular starter this season, but I have to say, I have massive respect for him now. You rarely see players recover from this. And even though he wasn't a great captain, I believe he's now a role model for the rest of our players, and a proof that you can only silence the noise on the pitch, not through PR bullshit, just on the pitch.

Antony is going through this humiliation right now, and it makes you wonder if there's a way back for him. I'd certainly look to Maguire for inspiration.

190k a week for maguire to sit on the bench, 4th choice CB.. not a chance, he'd be a good asset at another club, but he'll never be good enough to lead the backline, lets not forget how much we paid for this guy.. for me he was bought to be the Van Dijk for united and hes been a horrendous signing.

The way he has carried himself after having lost the captaincy, and generally taken care of business when he has been given his chances, is the mark of a true professional.

He's not on the bench though is he . The man of the match last night performance must have annoyed you.

He really hasn't been horrendous. We paid too much for him, and he's had to deal with that.

'Horrendous signing' is exactly the tripe you expect to read around here though.

He will never live down that transfer fee, the wages and the armband. Arguably didn't provide 80m worth of football excellence in the pitch. But with his resurgence he has quite a service for the club even with the bad seasons.

Had two appalling seasons and I thought it was completely over for him as not many would recover from that. Massive credit to his resilience and character to get things back on track.

Any top club would have sent him packing by now. Redemption from what? Doing his job which he failed at doing for several seasons. 80 million pounds down the drain and the manager has tried to ship him out but refused to leave due to money. He has also forfeited his England spot and missed out on the Euros because he chooses to cling on to Manchester United.

He has played okay, no substantial disaster on the pitch (thus far) which might seem like a redemption. Still does not scan the pitch, still slow on the turn, still very immobile. He is one the primary reason United have turned into this weird hybrid high press and defend deep team. He should be on the transfer list if the club wants to make some pennies back this season but he will cling on and be let go for free. An accounting mess.

Yoro, De ligt and Martinez will be first choice. He's about the same level as Evans . As long as he remains back up for his last season here then I'm not bothered. Make few errors and enjoy the last ride

Fans need to start raising the bar for the club. Top clubs must be ruthless because competition is fierce. If as a player you perform then you will be rewarded. If you fail to step up then you will be lambasted. Manchester United is not a charity shop. It is a club that has to and must operate at the highest performance.

Another one who'll have been seething at his performance last night for proving him wrong.

He missed the Euros because he was injured by the way, otherwise he'd have started.

He's gotten back to being a footballer worth the fans respect, so in that sense he's redeemed.

Not good enough for United, but at least he's looking like a Premier League player

Or someone who has won the lottery. Captaining Man United, a club you are no where near good enough to be a starting CB let along captaining the side while making millions of Pounds

Professional is a bit much, he is making a business decision, he won the lottery as no other club would have been stupid as we were.

It’s hardly the high road.

As for the OP, only way of any “Maguire Redemption” is if he leaves or if he somehow stays, he needs to stay on lower wages for his next contract.

Yeah, I'm chuffed for him that he's managed to get his head down and do his job. Even now people still laugh at him but he's been quietly solid for ages.

When standards become so low for a player they get praised to the high heavens for doing the basics right. It's been basically impossible to move him on and if we were to, we'd have to pay him to leave. Hardly a shining example of redemption.

If he was on half the money and transfer fee he'd be being hailed as a brilliant signing with his form these past 12 months.

He's never going to be good enough to start for us long term, but you'll struggle to find a 4th choice CB as good as him in the league.

So much bollocks in one post

He was really good for 2 seasons, really bad for the next 2, and was okay last season.

He's a fine CB and a good squad option for a team like United. It seems he's accepted his role of a squad player now, and is somewhat thriving off of the reduced responsibility and attention that brings.

The issue with him is that he's incredibly expensive, and not at all mobile. So, he's a poor fit for the high line we want to play.

He's not going to have a 'redemption'. And while I have no issue with him, I hope he's not given the chance to. If everyone stays fit this season, he's 4th choice behind younger and more exciting options

Good game yesterday but he is one of the reasons we can’t push forward

He is absolutely fine as a squad player and 4th choice. He has a lot of strengths many CBs dont have, and of course also some weaknesses. But that makes him a great squad player. I expect we will sell him though at some point/leave on a free, as he is on too high wages. But i would be fine for him staying if the wages get reduced.

We also cannot shift him anyway so just be glad he's playing far better and now without captaincy he can be not selected. That was the beginning of the aggro he got as he couldn't be dropped while playing badly.

Good luck to him.

Maguire has my utmost respect as a professional. It's not easy to come back from what he had experience before. His own fans boo him and turn against him. Many Man Utd fans want him gone. You need to have very strong mental strength and resilience to come back from this.

I have never seen a player recover so we'll from humiliation by his own fans.

I agree with your second sentence, difficult to find a fourth choice option who is as good as Maguire. The reason for that is also because no fourth choice centre back cost 80 million and is on the wages Harry Maguire is on.

I think he had a decent season last season but, even in his good games, he still made errors that could have resulted in goals. Even last night he had a very good game but around minute 70 he intercepted a Fulham pass inside our box and when trying to play it out, he passed it straight to a Fulham player just outside the box. However he also saved the team in a 2v1 situation when he intercepted a (bad) pass from Pereira.

I still prefer to see him sold so the Maguire money can be invested in a starter quality player instead of being used on a fourth choice centre back.

His partner made far more obvious errors last night and in the previous game than whatever you are trying to call out there.

He has dropped down the pecking order since ten Hag joined a couple of years ago.

But he has shown good mental strength and most importantly top professionalism.
As one of the leaders and one of the older players he has been a good example to the younger members in the squad.

He was good last season.

Arguably he was our best performing centre-back.

Hopefully he keeps to those standards.

Last night was a good start..

Yes but this topic isnt about Martinez. Maguire saved the team and Martinez in that 2v1. He did very well. Maguire had a good game overall.

The difference is that Martinez does not have a history of comedy moments and comedy compilations. If Martinez had two seasons where he played like Maguire did during his worldwide meme period than i would be worried about Martinez his bad moments. Martinez his bad moments are currently incidents while Maguire his Manchester United career is filled with games, even in his good games, where he made big and small mistakes.

For now im just going to consider Martinez his bad pass last night, his bad pass against City and his bad attempt at an interception to not yet being at his best or match fit.

I will support him as long as he wears the red shirt and plays for it. He seems to be here for another season which will be his last, hope he contributes to a few silverwares. I have a lot of respect for players who overcome adversity and thrive.

Spot on.

It’s ironic that a significant portion of our fan base often talks about the poor culture in the team, yet Maguire doesn’t get much credit for his absolute professional behaviour in circumstances where it would’ve been far easier to jump ship.

He had good performances last season and last night was very good. If he was a fast player he would be one of the first players picked. Saying that there will be no new contract at seasons end.

He would be a top quality CB if he wasn't so slow.

Maguire is a great litmus test for me about football knowledge, tbh. Just coming into this thread there are several posters who have no idea what they're talking about and their assessment of Maguire couldn't be further from the truth. He's one of the best CCBs in the world, and he's proven it many times, yesterday was just one of the many occasions.

I was actually thinking these thoughts during the game. Maguire was very good, and if he can stay fit he will be invaluable off the bench this year. That said, Martinez was so far and away top class it did show the talent gap. If Martinez stays fit he is going to be a top 5 CB in the world this season. He has no weakness, which is amazing given his stature. Probably our best transfer in the modern era...with Bruno a close second.

Back to Maguire though...I think he's pretty much been exactly what he was when we signed him. Against certain structures hes a beast. Others...not so much. We way overpaid for him because we were desperate and were in the core years of being absolutely fleeced in transfers. But overall he's hardly been a disaster as a signing. His attitude has been top notch, and he's always worked hard despite some clear limitations. He's almost literally the perfect bench CB.

He's not ideal for a team wanting to play a higher line, but while hes playing well as a CB in general he will keep getting chances because hes not letting us down. He came back so well last season and continued last night
