Maguire | he stays!

He would argue that he started off well at United and was made club captain for a reason. Ultimately he'll be looking at things from his perspective not from a fan or neutral viewpoint and we've seen players many times feel they've been hard done even if objectively they weren't good enough or didn't deserve to be playing.

But what does any of that have to do with reality ?

If Maguire thinks he is a better CB than Shaw, he has a right to feel aggrieved and feel that the manager doesn't rate him. Rio simply says if he was in Maguire's shoes he'd want to leave and that's fair enough, don't think it's particularly controversial.

In ceartain games, maybe but he's an accident waiting to happen against any half decent attack imo. Luke Shaw is a full back.

Exactly that's why its so damning. Martinez was a midfielder when ETH bought him anyway, its all about how the skillset fits in the system and Shaw is a good one on one defender with some acceleration and a good pass.

That’s not controversial. But I don’t think you actually read the article…

Rio also said he would confront ten Hag and ask him, “Are you trying to take the piss out of me (playing Luke Shaw instead) ?” Also said he would walk straight into the manager’s office and ask, “Are you disrespecting me ?”

That’s not only controversial it’s pure horseshit from Rio. Like @FrankDrebin said, could you see him stomping into Fergie’s office and saying such ? It’s just childish nonsense really and Rio should be smarter than that.

Rio saying that sounds like he just wants Maguire to behave as stupidly as his mate Ronnie to justify that behaviour. However, Ronaldo at least used to be good, Maguire has never been even close

It’s always the clubs fault in the eyes of retired pros. If it’s not the manager disrespecting them it’s the club not letting them go.

Maguire hasn’t been in the team all season, and he had a terrible 21/22 season. It is 100% on Harry and his management to find him a new club.

We really do have the thickest group of ex players going. Evetytime they open their mouth you can guarantee they’ll say something stupid.

While other clubs have their ex-players in the media usually batting for them, trying to put a positive spin on things and help the club, all of ours seem desperate to tear it all down. Except for when their mate was in charge of course.

Absolute prats the lot of em.

Actually I hope Maguire does stink up a fuss. Easier to get the oil tanker out, you'd hope.

One of the most god awful decisions made in recent years at the club on the playing side. Never in a million years United captain material

Easy to say that now but at the time we had no leaders in the squad to be an obvious captain choice

I very much doubt we'd let him go in

ETH has made it perfectly clear he doesn't rate Maguire, why is it a surprise?

Did Maguire really think because he managed to get a clean sheet against USA, Wales and Senegal that he'd waltz back in the team?

We know what he's good at and what he isn't. He's a penalty box defender, but we don't want to play like that anymore.

He should go to Everton or Wolves.

It's quite clear some of our agenda-pushing ex-players are now wishing ETH to fail for the way he "disrespected" Ronaldo. I haven't heard anything positive about the club from Rio post-Ronaldo. It's bloody disgusting.

Yep, its all rather embarrassing.

What reason other than Ole being an idiot?

I'm not sure there's much in these comments from Ferdinand. It's in a relaxed environment in what's essentially a podcast full of banter and journalists have taken quotes from his conversation within that atmosphere and made headlines. If it was for BT sport than it's understandable as that is a professional environment.

I also listened to 10 mins of the podcast before becoming bored but Rio and the panelists gave credit to ETH for his progression and development with the team. They applauded him for raising the value of several individual players, gave the manager credit for his coaching ability and the staff alongside the philosophy and transitioning what's done in training into live games. Spoke about the momentum of the club and also highly praised ETH for his comments and assessment of the Everton game.

If there's a bone to pick with former players against ETH I don't think it comes from that platform.

I didn't read the article but I don't think you've seen the clip on Youtube....in the context of the conversation I don't think you can take his exact words seriously as he's clearly being tongue in cheek but more generally that he'd approach the manager about it.

He said he'd want to strangle Evra if he was starting at CB instead of him, not the time to take Rio's words literally.

The old boys club is embarrassing. Thick as mince the lot.

Rio's said plenty of positive things, just the media and fans tend to pay more attention to the headline grabbing headlines. In the same video he praised ETH for dropping his best player in Rashford amongst other things. With Rio in particular, I think his backing of Ronaldo was ridiculous and clearly done in order not to annoy his mate but since then I think he's been fine. In this case saying Maguire should leave isn't a criticism of ETH in my opinion just putting forward the perspective of a player who thinks he should be starting.

He wasn't even that good against Senegal either, I can remember his lack of pace and mobility being terribly exposed up until we scored the 2nd goal

If you use the England model from the euros with him, he could be useful for certain teams, I could see Villa coming in for him in summer. 2 defensive mids in front of him, pace in the full back areas, he could be effective in a team such as Villa, if they are setting up as hard to break down. Not be a great watch for their fans, but wouldn't be our issue anymore.

Does he really think Maguire is anywhere near as good as he was?

He can't be an objective pundit and view everything through the prism of what he would do if he was in that situation. Guess what Rio it never would have happened and yes if they played a LB ahead of you they would be taking the piss but that's completely irrelevant to the Maguire situation.

He got caught against Iran too and was at fault for the first goal.

I do think it's best he leaves, but I can't see it happening until the summer.

Not a chance Rio would have even dreamed of confronting Fergie about not playing.

He'd have seen what happens when he was half way down the road.

Yeah.
Rio would walk in Fergie office. Sure.
He should shut up instead of stiring the shit.

Read the article before I posted it. I don’t think he’s saying anything bad about ETH. He is just talking about how he would see things if it happened to him.
There is zero chance Rio would have accepted being behind a LB in the pecking order. He isn’t telling Maguire to cause trouble. He is also not saying Maguire should start.

His part in the Ronaldo saga and the fact he chooses to spend time with Stephan Howson suggests Rio only had a brain for playing the game with.

Rio was a winner, Maguire is Mr. Bean.

Rio's an idiot.

His take on the Ronaldo situation proves this beyond any doubt.

40m - 50m is a reasonable fee for him. With so many clubs spending money, pretty sure an epl club will take him.

Invest that in Kim or the Benfica kid which everyone is raving about.

Saw what Rio said yesterday and my recaction was he shit stirring here - telling a player they should feel disrespected and should be going into the manager's office. Like he would have walked into Fergie's office and say he is being disrespected because a player that is performing exceptionally well in his position is keeping him out. First ETH has been consistent from the start, players who are either performing have kept their place, same as those who have come in and done well have kept their spot. Start of the season, Malacia comes in and plays really well and keeps Shaw out till he didn't do well and Shaw who came back in took the spot back. McTomminay was playing really well and kept Casemeiro out till he had a crap game against City. Gone are the days of playing only on reputation/name on the back of the shirt.

That's the first part but, the second part even more important part that he has been clear even to the general public he wanted a left footed CB for the LCB spot because to him it greatly affects ability to play from the back.

As to Maguire, if we can indeed get a large fee for him now, then do it because he really is going to be down the pecking order but, we also do need quality bodies for rest of the season and he is still a quality CB to have around if we can't get a good fee for him.

Selling him for 40m - 50m would be amazing. Im not even sure he will ever look like a good player again, he is a broken player and every opponent knows his weaknesses. These days he gets tricked by simple body feints every Premier League attacker can make... why would that change in a different team?

I feel like we have missed the boat with this guy in terms of re-sale value because God forbid that unless varane picks up injury or suspension then Maguire is going to struggle for game time, especially if we don't make it past an inform barca side.

Though it should be reasonable to demand 40 million when koulibaly was 36 million and the likes of ake was 40 million, Maguire does tick the homegrown box for prem clubs, I just hope the owners don't act dumb and refuse to sell him to a supposed "rival" like spurs or Newcastle

Mings got sold for 28m 3 years back. Chelsea paid 40m for Koulibaly. Villa paid 35m for Carlos .

Dont see any reason to loan him out. Better to keep him as a sub instead of a loan. We need to sell him outright.
