Maguire: “My win rate under current manager is ridiculously high” | “I don’t like playing once a month, will have a chat with club”

Maguire is a starting England centre back. There's FAR more noise around someone like him than McTominay. And you know how the press love to build up but also (and maybe especially) take down an English player. 'Greedy Harry' is a better story than united wanting another 10 million imo.

Starting for England doesn’t mean good enough for a side playing progressive football or indeed for the kind of stupid wages that sides that don’t play progressive football can’t afford to pay.
The reason that Maguire is starting for England is that he’s a big strong lump of a bloke who’s good at playing simple football.
International sides like England only have their squads together for a few weeks here and there so they can’t cultivate complex football and have to keep it simple.
Being simple is Harry’s forte and the waistcoat doesn’t care if he can’t play out from the back under pressure, all he wants is a bloke who wrestles the opposition to the floor when defending corners and who‘s first desire is to hoof it into tier 3 rather than place a pass across the field to open a route upfield without losing possession.

But it would appear fairly obvious that that is the reason why Henderson is being booed. Nobody respects a virtue-signaling celebrity who then makes a move that flies in the face of said virtue-signaling, all whilst pocketing obscene amounts of money (and then claiming afterward that money wasn't the motivating factor.)
Sure. But if it wasn't Henderson but say, Bellingham in a similar circumstance I doubt the boo would ring as much.

Fans generally find it easier to take a moral high ground when the player is expendable, and that's not me taking sides, just observing that it's easy to be a hypocrite. Just like Henderson was.

Not sure why you're quoting me here? Did you read the post I was responding to? It's got nothing to do with whether he's good enough for us.

Sorry mate, I misquoted / responded to the wrong post - reading back it does look a surreal . . even I couldn’t make out where I was coming from.
I recon I’m getting a bit dithery in my old age.

Easily done buddy, I've done it myself many times!

Yeah you're probably right about that - the Greenwood saga provides some interesting insights into that as well.

Perhaps it would be sensible of Maguire agents to advise on one thing..DO NOT SPEAK ...of course you can boo a player if you choose to
It’s not illegal to boo. You can walk down the street and boo everyone you meet. Boo mothers with prams. Boo old people for being slow. Boo children. Boo them all until they cry. If that doesn’t work, throw stuff at them, like chimps throwing poo.

Throwing poo is illegal unless you're a chimp.

Boo old people for being slow.

I wouldn't. I want to. But I guess I'm just too nice.

But one thing...it's something I've started noticing more and more for some reason:

You're in a bit of a hurry early in the morning. You're using some kind of public transportation. You exit your bus/train/tram/whatever...and you try to get the feck away from the platform/bus stop/whatever as quickly as possible (of course). And you end up behind people (not old people, they don't tend to use public transportation during rush hours) who are seemingly just taking a stroll, they move infuriatingly slowly (as if it's on purpose), and you just want to...not boo them, actually, because what you really want to do is to give them a proper kick up the arse...but perhaps, yes: I should start booing those people. I mean, I can't very well kick them up the arse (being somewhat civilized), but booing them...Yes! I think that could work as a compromise.

I have to hand it to him. I don't know if it's borne out of his own self-delusion or if he's just this thick, but he's only one of few players in the team who genuinely doesn't seem to be affected or even care about negative pressure around him.

Just wish he had the ability to go along with his confidence so he doesn't end up looking like a fool most of the time.

He clearly has been negatively affected by the stick he's gotten over the past 18 months. Look at his performances at the Euros in 2021 compared to more recently.

Fair enough, I stand corrected... I think he's at the very least done a better job of hiding this than most others in the squad. And again, I wish he was actually as confident as he pretends to be.

That's the thing. I think it's fair to assume he's demonstrating fake confidence in press conferences in an attempt to stand up for himself and his teammates, which isn't going to translate into actual confidence on the pitch.

People. I’m with you.

With him, we would win the league

He's adding to his case. What say the jury? :)
It’s so interesting. He’s suffered from overly harsh judgement, so he’s getting overly nice praise.

The reality is he was a very decent player for many years (for us and before us). Then he went through a rough patch and people decided he was the worst player to have ever kicked a ball. Now he’s back to decent-ish form and people are staggered, like how could this happen?? The fact is he was never that bad and conversely he’s currently not that good

He typically plays versus rubbish teams and Cup teams though.

This but the British media have latched onto it now and will use it to force their agenda he should be starting every game.

That said he was ok today and is not the worst of problems at present

To be honest, many players who face such constant criticism from the fans, and even having the manager demote them, would lose all confidence and perform like shite.

Given all that, it is surprising that Maguire still tries hard and actually performs quite well, both for Man Utd and the NT. Perhaps he has a good character and we were too harsh on him?

Plenty of our other players routinely look shite and clueless against those rubbish teams and cup teams thpugh.

At his best, he's a quality defender. I don't think he's right for us as his lack of pace doesn't suit a high line. Unless we're so dominant in possession that it doesn't matter so much and his ability to recycle the ball outways his need to run back. We're so far away from that though.

The fact he's still going despite getting the amount of abuse he has is testament to his character. If we'd paid £40m or similar for him, he'd not have gotten anywhere near the amount of critism and micro analysis he does these days. That price tag set him up for failure unless he instantly became one of the best defenders in the world.

Didn't help making him captain either. Just piled on the pressure. There was a severe lack of options for the captaincy though at that time which didn't help!

What's better? The agenda that supports our player, or the agenda that is against him from our own supporters?

I hope he does find his form again. We need the back up considering how often Varane is injured. I know this is a controversial thing to say on the Caf, but he was good yesterday.

Wonder will it be love/hate after next Sunday's fixture.

Regular or newly improved Maquire....we can pray.

The teams he has played 90 minutes against this season and last:

Brentford x2
West Ham x2
Fulham x2
Crystal Palace
Sheffield United
Nottingham Forest
Everton
Leeds
Bournemouth
Brighton
Reading
Aston Villa
Charlton
Real Betis
Real Sociedad
Sevilla

Is it any wonder his win percentage is decent?

I struggle to comprehend how most posters ripped into Maguire just 2 weeks ago and now they're lauding him. Wtf?
It's almost like when a player plays badly they deserve criticism and when they play well you can give them praise.

Mental.

He's the wrong type of player for how we want to play. He needs replacing eventually and isn't really suitable to be back up to Varane but hopefully he can do a decent job when we need him.

People are giving credit where it's due? So strange
Personally I think you should pick a side and rigidly stick to it no matter what! Creates genuine good faith debate and proper resolutions.
