Maarten Stekelenburg

Out for the season (9 weeks) now i´ve heard.

And by the way back-up goalie Kenneth Vermeer is also still out for some weeks.

Jeroen Verhoeven will be their goalkeeper for the rest of the season. This is a picture of Verhoeven...

People seem to forget about Muelensteen's "Stekelenburg is the keeper who is at the top of our wanted list". With all the recent hype about Neuer and constant links to De Gea, most of us don't expect Stekelenburg to be the one to take over for VDS. Seeing as he is a really good keeper, wants to leave Ajax and would be relatively cheap compared to Neuer and de Gea, I see it as a likely option.

Would you be content with the acquisition of the Dutchman?

I think he's average and if we buy him we will end up looking for a new goalkeeper in two or three years, there is no mercy for goalkeepers here.

Agreed. He'd be a stop gap until we find something better.

We can't buy average stop gap 'keepers anymore.

I would. I'd have him over a Reina any day.

Stekelenburg is good. But VDS is great, would be a massive drop in quality. De Gea is better and Neuer is miles better. If Stekelenburg really was at the top of our list of keepers, then we dont have a very good list

Yeah, hard to argue with that from what I've seen. I can't help feeling we might as well buy someone like Robinson or Rob Green if we're going for Stekelenburg. They're all 6/10 keepers. But if VDS has shown us anything it's that top keepers make the difference time and again.

The times that I've seen him (not that many!) he hasn't impressed me much. Then again I imagine our scouts know better than me.

Have people seen much of him? He's not seemed hugely impressive when I've seen him but it's only been a few games.

From what I've seen he looks like a class act. Unspectacular, but solid. He's now the same age as Ed was when he left the Eredevise, and while he doesn't quite have the same level of experience, he wouldn't be a bad bet. Playing for Ajax, he'll know all about having little to do yet being sharp when called upon. De Gea and Neuer won't. I'm not saying I'd rather have Stekelenburg, I just feel he's a bit underrated 'round here.

You say that but its not like Ajax have been more successful than Schalke or Atletico in recent years. I mean its 4 seasons since Ajax last won the league... Schalke have finished in similar positions but in a much tougher league.

He had a good World Cup and he was good against Real earlier this season in the CL, but like all of the others bar Neuer, he doesn't carry that commanding presence.

The announcers on the US feed mentioned that VDS was now contemplating whether or not he wanted to retire, it was no longer a definite.

Any other rumors?

I would rather give PIG or Lindegaard a shot at the No.1 spot. I just don't rate Stekelenberg. He would be no more than a stop gap that would need replacing as has already been said.

Neuer and De Gea, are leaps and bounds ahead of this guy.

Google the stats and you'll see that De Gea is by far the busiest of the 3, but you might be right about there not being much difference between the other 2 in that department.

Extremely disappointed if we end up with him, but I haven't seen him a lot. Based on what I have seen however, I would expect us to be back in the market within a relatively short time, because I just don't feel like he's good enough.

i'd give lindegaard a chance.

if carroll, taibi, timmy the flapper, and ben the meltdown all had legitimate chances of getting the number 1 shirt, lindegaard should get a shot.

I just can't understand this.

Because we took punts and gambles on other keepers that didn't work out, cost us points and possibly trophies, we should take yet another punt (on a player United will have seen a lot, in scouting and training and seemingly don't think is No.1 material) rather than go for the player we think is actually the best option for us?

I would have thought the instability and rubbish we went through in the period between Schmeichel leaving and VDS signing would have people wanting us to go for the best option available, rather than giving a backup keeper a shot.

I'm shocked that so many in here don't rate Stekelenburg at all. It might have something to do with the fact that only few have actually seen him play regularly or with the fact that there are a lot of Neuer fanboys out there that only want Neuer to join, and don't even want to look at someone else as VDS's replacement.

Anyway, Stekelenburg is my first choice for when VDS retires. He's not one seeking the limelight, but he lets his performances do the talking. He's also a bit older than the other options suggested in various threads, but I prefer someone a bit older and more experienced as our first choice GK, and Stekelenburg fits that description.

Im not shocked I new poeple in here would act this way if we sign Stekelenberg, Rodwell and maybe Young I think people in the transfer forum might actually die.

Second this.

GK isn't a position where you put someone in and hope for the best. You buy the best option availible and then hope they fulfil the confidence you had in them sooner rather than later. Should that option be De Gea then so be it.

Don't see why a club competing for title number 19 and a possible champions league final shouldn't settle for the best keeper than can get. We don't do second with competing for trophies so why should we with our players?!

Well shouldn't fans of this club respect a manager like SAF and the great scouts not to forget VDS if they think Stekelenberg is good enough shouldn't we. If De Gea or Neuer don't want to leave there home countries then so be it I would be happy with an International goalkeeper.

You'll be happy with Lindegaard then

We already have two international keepers in back up to Van der Sar.

The problem with his age is that until the WC he never looked good enough to play for a team like United. What good is the extra experience when he's nowhere near as good as some of the other options? If we want an older more experienced keeper, Diego Lopez is better than this guy
