Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

If Chelsea wanted him he would be theirs by now, they are not like us, fannying around taking weeks on end.
Has Diego Costa signed for them yet?

You know, the Diego Costa they made a bid for the day after we bid for Shaw.

It's amazing how facts are ignored when there's a glib statement to be made.

It was always very bizarre how highly he was rated on here. I reckon it's because he started a CL final.
I was a fan of his and I agree the CL final start probably did cloud a lot of our judgement. However, I think for most of his fans, it was that he showed the same promise as his brother, maybe even more maturity at a young age. Obviously Rafael had an easier path with Neville getting to the end of his career while Evra was close to the best LB in the world but it was just frustrating seeing him not being given a chance that he possibly could have been given.

I'd bet my house on that one already being tied up, they wouldn't annouce it as they the 2 biggest games in their history coming up.

Chelsea 95% of the time get things done and dusted, where as we dither.

Thats not to say they won't bid for him if other circumstances change but I don't think they would have bid for him already as otherwise he would already be in a blue shirt...

Hopefully we can get him but next Friday will be the cut off point as Hodgson has already said there will be no agents, transfer dealings and what not whilst England are in Brazil.

Cole leaving certainly makes the odds swing back to Chelsea, but don't forget they still have Bertrand to come back into the LB slot aswell for a backup.

There seemed to be a lot of faith in Bertrand when he first broke through and he started the CL final but in classic Chelsea style it looks like they've given up on a youth player.

Yeah the same happened when they wanted Rooney last year and it meant they didn't have to make do with an uninspiring plan b like we will.

The story I have heard locally is that Shaw is a boyhood Chelsea fan (we all know), and is born and bred in the south London / Surrey area. His first choice ideally would of been to join Chelsea and stay in the south, but Man utd are offering a much higher wage, and getting guaranteed 1st team football is a big plus for him. Obviously though that mean's leaving his roots and moving north, but then that's just part of what a footballer has to deal with.

I think the hesitation has been that Chelsea can't decide whether they want to spend that sort of money for a fullback, and he is a little reluctant to jump to any deal straight away.

Let's just hope that Jose is happy with his defence right now and would rather spend in more attacking positions.

I'm not sure it really has anything to do with Chelsea at this stage. By all accounts Shaw is keen to move to United and the deal is being held up by small financial details.

He might be a Chelsea fan, but they're yet to make an offer and there's no great rivalry between the clubs. It's rare that a young player gets an opportunity to become a regular at one of the biggest clubs in world football, as a teenager, under a manager known for his faith in young players. Chelsea will probably never have that opening. It's the perfect move in so many ways and all the journos seem to think it's all but sewn up.

Where is all this Chelsea nonsense coming from?

Just cause Cole is leaving doesn't automatically mean they want Shaw. Its well publicised they want Filipe Luis - that's the one they will buy.

I was thinking this.

Since when does Jose buy/trust young defenders (or young players in general) for a starting place?
Filipe Luis is right down his street; Shaw isn't.

Don't think Chelsea can afford to spend £30m on luxuries like a 18 yr old LB with the FFP cloud hovering over their head. The money will be spent on a top class striker.

He was never anything special.

I rate him fairly highly, but maybe not quite highly enough for a side like Chelsea. He reminds me a bit of a young, left-sided Sagna: very defensively solid, a decent physical presence, and good enough at supporting a winger in attack. But extremely limited as an attacker in his own right, and with no element of his game that stands out as top class.

I think it will be the same for all the targets that are playing in the world cup. Managers do not want the distraction of transfers disruption their preparation. However, seen previous world cups where players have left their training camps, to sort their deals out....Think the deals will be agreed provisionally beforehand, with announcements once the teams are knock out the competition.

What makes it even more bizarre for us is our managers there also....

With FFP rearing its ugly head United seem to again be the biggest financial force, effectively we can outbid Chelsea and Man City. Can Chelsea really afford £30mil for a left back without risking FFP penalties? It's certainly not guaranteed whereas it doesn't seem to be a problem for us.

I think the FFP sanctions on PSG and City will definitely have discouraged Chelsea.

Another 'top class' striker?
Plus, they might be selling Luiz. Possibly Lukaku.

There have other areas of concern. A new top CB and another midfielder with creativity as Lamps can't play a lot of games.

Is Costa confirmed? I think they'll buy to strikers. You cannot go into a season as a top club with only one good striker.

Chelsea are only spending 32M on Costa. With the players they are selling this summer they will easily rake back another £20M.

Just because there is no "official" bid yet, does not mean Chelsea haven't contacted him behind the scenes.

I really do wish this is as far forward as some of you think, but I have a feeling this dragging along is not really good news.

I can't see Mourinho going for him. 27m for an 18 year left back is not top priority for him.

However the more time passes the bigger chance we end up letting this deal slipping through our fingers. We need to be more decisive in terms of sealing our deals.

Is it dragging along? Not even ten days from the end of the season.

Under normal circumstances I wouldn't say so. However with the WC coming up everyone look set to seal the deals as quickly as possible. If we let this deal drag after the world cup then we would surely ask for trouble

I can't think of a single deal which has been confirmed. We've heard Liverpool bid for Lallana - that's gone quiet. We've heard Chelsea agreed a deal for Costa - no confirmation as far as I know, and has gone very quiet.

National team managers always ask players to have their futures sorted before tournaments but it rarely works out like that!

Isn't he in Portugal now?

Very unlikely this will be confirmed until after England are knocked out, one way or another.

No fecking interest whatsoever right now, not even for France. We'll see when the tournament starts how I'll feel, I suspect I might watch only France's match in the group stages.

The world cup only comes once every four years. I cant wait for it to start.

He's gone mate :(

A shame, too, because although for much of Cardiff's season he was justifying our decision with inconsistent performances, right at the end he started to get to grips with it, took control of the first-choice position, and there were maybe two or three games where he was one of their three most effective players along with Daehli and Kim.

I do agree with him though that it makes clear sense to try and buy Shaw and keep Evra. Evra's comments at the end of this season suggested that he wanted and/or expected to stay with us, despite the media's speculation to the contrary.

Play it that way and it becomes a strong position for us again: a young, talented first-choice regarded as one of the best in the league in his position, and an experienced, gifted older hand backing him up, reducing the pressure on him to hit the ground running.

Recently saw this on twitter regarding Chelsea and it may give us an idea about how much they will be able to spend. Don't really think they're in any real danger of FFP infringement as long as they don't go on a City/PSG level spree. I think if they saw it necessary they could still buy whomever they wanted.

From the TV money alone they could buy Shaw & Costa.

Well Southampton can accept our offer. The player can complete the formalities with us later.

How do you know they haven't? The simple fact of the matter is that Shaw's already on England duty. He won't be able to have a medical and sign terms until he's back.

This would be a fantastic outcome.

I guess that this is the whole point of FFP, if implemented correctly, that teams can only spend what money they generate themselves from their football business activities. If working properly, the clubs that can spend the most on transfers and wages should be United, Real Madrid, Barca, etc not those where one individual pumps in money.

(First post ever in the mains after my introduction post BTW)
