Shaw's a really talented player but fullback is probably the most physically demanding position on the field and with his injury record he'll never be able to up and down the field the way that is needed. We should already be looking out for his replacement although it's not an immediate priority due to a million other issues.

Stop with this nonsense.

We are stucked with Luke Fatshaw for 3 years more. No club in the world would pay his wages (hopefully I'm wrong and the Saudis are that stupid).
Save your breath. Only your chums who can’t recognise a decent footballer when they see him will pay any attention to a post like that.

Nobody is arguing that he isn't a good footballer but he is absolutely a terrible pro. Never fit and only shows up at a decent form for a couple of months a year. We reward these guys again and again.

If we need to sell to buy, if we're serious about rebuilding, this summer would be the time to sell Shaw. His value will only go down from here and I don't think he'll age well.

Probably worth about £30 to £40 million?

Get it reinvested in a fit, 24 year old running machine.

What's his injury? Doesn't look like he's in training with the team.

Shaw (when fit) is one of our most important players. Hope he returns soon. He really adds quality to our left wing especially crosses.

Exactly why we have not sniffed a league title in 10 years. He isn’t good enough along with the rest of our most important players.

Luke Shaw literally has everything bar competent teammates. He’s a left back ffs he’s not going to propel any team to a title charge on his own. He’d start for any of the top 6.

Yes except when his form dips regularly or hes missing (again regularly)
Even when fit his attacking output is far below top lbs

He’s injured no more than Robertson for example, who everyone seems to cream off.
When has his form dipped? He had a bad year in the Ronaldo season but literally every single player did, other than that he’s been brilliant, so 4 of the last 5 seasons? Doesn’t sound inconsistent to me.

Well that's not true....

When did his form dip? I think a better question is when has he sustained great form. Hes been with us since LVG and has not been able to sustain multiple full seasons of top form. Its a bit silly to bring up Robertson whos injury record is far better and his attacking output is light years ahead of Shaws too

In 20/21 and 22/23 he was brilliant, easily on par with Robertson. Full back is such nuanced position in modern football you can’t just compare attacking output as a barometer for how good they are. What about Kyle Walkers attacking output? He’s probably been the best full back in world football over the last 5 years but his numbers won’t back that up.

Of all the issues in our current team, surely left back is way down the bottom. Shaw when fit is superb.

So a player that has been here since 2014 has managed to string 2 season together (even though he his form in for about a third of 20/21 wasn’t even that good) but lets give that to you. A player who has been at the club that long only has 2 seasons strung together of good form and you think he is a player good enough for a club wanting to win top titles? Like I said before he epitomises the problem at this club.

These isn’t a single player thats been in the first team squad more than 3 years who is good enough. By the end of Oles time at the club Shaws form was in the bin.

If you are evaluating him against the rest of the squad hes very good. If you are evaluating him against where we need to be he is far from what we need.

I think you’re overly simplistic with your views, ‘been here through our bad times, therefore must be bad’.
Just because players have been let down by dogshit teammates and managers it doesn’t make them bad footballers. For example if Martinez had played for us for the last 7/8 years would that suddenly make him a bad player? Or are you suggesting if we’d have had Martinez in some of those campaigns we’d have been successful? Is Harry Kane a bad player because he never won anything with Tottenham, or was he let down by his teammates?

Also 20/21 he was the best left back in the world, not half a season of good form like you suggest. He was also brilliant in the second half of 19/20 and he’s pretty much brilliant for us now whenever he plays, so it’s not just 2 seasons is it? It’s 4 years of top form with an off season in the middle.

It really is two (maybe three at best) seasons and that's the problem and your appraisal of his form in 19/20 is generous. He hasn't been able to do it in successive seasons, due to injury or just bad form.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's had three good years- 18-19 (slightly generous) 20-21 (no one will argue with you there) and last season 22-23. He's followed up each of those with the following year being a disappointment and that's kind of the issue here. It's hard to rely on someone like that and it's a shame because he's a very talented player but when you follow up your good season with a bad one straight after where the likes of Young, Telles, Dalot, and even fecking Williams at one point get ahead of you in the pecking order then something's not right with consistency.

I am talking about his own individual performance and in the 10 years he has been here you can’t give more than 2 consecutive seasons hes performed at a high level at so much so you are now trying to insist on 4 seasons “with an off season in the middle” that means it is not consecutive seasons.

So he's been here 9/10 years and he's only managed top form in about 50% of his time here and you think hes not a problem.

He is not good enough for where we want to be. Hes a good player but we don’t just want good players we need top players

Obviously he isn’t the first position I would fix but 100% we should have been looking for a young player to challenge him since Jose left the club. Which we only did last summer with Malacia.

I had a look at the amount of appearances the likes of Neville, Irwin, and Evra put in in their primes and you're looking at a lot of successive seasons of 40+ games (in some instances 50+) and I think people forget that's the standard we should be aiming for: someone that claims that fullback slot as their own and is pretty much undisputed first choice/always available. Obviously Luke has been unlucky with injuries and his first four seasons here were very disappointing but it's just frustrating he can't seem to reach that level of quality year in year out. He'll be lucky to reach 30 appearances this season.

What's the betting he has a good season next year, we qualify for the champions league again and then his form/fitness goes to pot in the year after? :(

I don't think there's any way Luke Shaw's physique or body shape gives us 40- 50 games of dynamic full back play. Not at this stage.

We need a new left back in the summer really. He's as unreliable as anyone. Sick of the sight of Dalot at left back.

Shaw goes missing when things aren't going United's way. He is and always was a fair weather player. He is on my list of get rid when we can actually get some money for him. Hopefully he gets fit for euros, plays well, and we should then cash in.

Newport County 2:4 Man Utd
Under Solskjaer he was one of the best LBs in Europe and one of our biggest attacking threats, under Ten Hag I feel like we barely see him cross the halfway line. I know it seems a weird game to pick up on this as he aided in a goal but it's something I've noticed for a while

Become more of a LCB under EtH. I think it makes sense considering his type of body, amount of injuries and age.

Maybe, I just miss that iteration of Shaw, he added a different dimension to our game.

Our whole wingplay is just weird all round. It looks very unbalanced and disjointed.

Not bad today, much better than Bissaka at LB recently. Has hit the post which resulted in a rebound goal for Antony, too

That was a beautiful shot on his weaker foot for the 3rd goal.

Other then that not much to write home about.

Yeah, I think it's a mix of ten Hag's tactics and Shaw's own body: the endurance to get up and down in the way he used to has been whittled away with the constant injuries. We rely way less on him to progressively carry the ball and far more on his passing and general composure in the first half of the field.

I think he's just physically shot for the full back role. We should get rid in the summer or just make him a backup to Martinez.

Yesterday was the first time in a couple of years that he appeared to have that look of being slightly too bulky, too slow on his feet.
