These are some strange stats considering he has only 5 assists plus I didn’t see many chances created yesterday. What is “creating a chance”? Does it include the corners and free kicks he hits?

Yes, chance created includes chances created from set pieces too. For example, yesterday Maguire completely missed the ball and ball hit his knee (first corner) and then Maguire also got free header. Both are chances created.

Most key passes per 90 of any full back in the league playing over 15 games this season too.

10th in expected assists in the league and 2nd for a defender (only behind TAA). Also same xA/90 mins as TAA, best in the league.

In 2021, he is 3rd in expected assists. 1st for a defender.

I like Luke. He looks determined and knows what to do. You know when a player reaches a certain level of experience where they arent consciously having to make new decisions and it happens in the subconscious and therefore looks effortless. Thats what i feel has happened to Luke. He doesnt have to think anymore. Its in the subconscious. That could also be due to the fact he doesnt have to look over his shoulder to the bench and have an angry portugese shouting at him telling him he is stupid every game. That helps too

It's quite incredible Southgate prefers Chilwell over him. Shaw is probably the best LB in the world right now.

Ok thanks, then these stats are more understandable.

We really need someone who can direct headers from set pieces, Maguire is beyond a joke in that respect.

I know the term world-class gets bandied around a lot, but imo, this season he's been the only player in our squad who has performed at a world-class level. You can see he's as talented as Pogba, as effective as Bruno, and more often than not over 90 mins, more consistent than both of them. Exceptional player.

He's our best player this season and I really don't think there's any debate to be had on the matter. He's had maybe 1 poor performance this season, every other game has been at least a 7/10. First time I think we've had a truly world class player since Rooney/RVP.

Physically very strong, intelligent when defending and understand the game well, and offensively also very good this season capable to create lot of quality chances. I seriously can’t see any flaw in his game as a left back. May be the only flaw is that he doesn’t dribble like Alphonso Davies. But that’s not really a thing that full back must have to be world class full back. Lot of full backs like Robertson and Trent don’t dribble the ball anyway.

Do you know how the list xA/90 looks like for open play?

He should really be dutch with technique like that.

I seriously rate Shaw but an obvious flaw is he occasionally leaves our CBs in no mans land due to his positioning. He obviously wants to be advanced when we are on the ball but he occasionally pushes up when our opponents have it and that drags Maguire out of the center towards the left and then its panic stations.

Feels like we've been slowly trying to shift away from the left flank in terms of creating chances for the past few games for some reason.

It's quite incredible Southgate prefers Chilwell over him. Shaw is probably the best LB in the world right now.
Southgate is a hack who plays his favourites.

He lucked into an easy World Cup draw the previous time and lost to the only decent team they faced in the entire tournament.

To be fair, we don't know for certain that he does. I wouldn't really read too much into the San Marino line up, so from there all we know is he picked Shaw for Albania and Chilwell for Poland... Both were first XI's with only Shaw/Chilwell being rotated, so yeah you could say that him even thinking its a decision between the two is a bit baffling, but I don't think we can definitely say he prefers Chilwell (yet... though like you I suspect he does).

That's why it's hard to take stats seriously.
I agree. We know how good he is, but to equal his ability to create goal scoring chances to a guy who scored 25 goals and assisted 9 in 25 games...?! Those stats are seriously not a good way to measure what they claim to measure.

Edit:
I also think the one who pulled the stats made a mistake somehow. Shaw has 66 as said, but Bruno has 89 as example.

It's worrying when the left-back has the best touch in a team.
Genuinely believe his is the best. I have complete faith in his first touch regardless of the situation.
It's easily the best, but why be worried by it? The remarkable thing about his first touch is that it isn't dramatic or flashy - his touch invariably sets up his next move so seamlessly and effortlessly, whether it's to drive forward into space, or maneuver free of an opponent's press.

This is the best summary I've seen of Shaw. Great post.

Its not a mistake, its just a tweet saying Shaw and Messi created same number of chances. Not the most chances.

That’s true, my mistake. Still a weird way to phrase it, as “key pass” is not always creating a goal scoring chance, and it is not the only way to create a goal scoring chance. It is simply a pass to someone who shots or heads the ball at goal.
It should also be noted that assists are excluded from key passes which makes the statement even more weird.

So what's wrong with the stat in the end? It just proves how vital Shaw is to our build-up play and chance creation. It's not from a single game or a single month, it's over almost a whole season. It definitely holds merit, doesn't mean Shaw is Messi, but also it means he has been as incredible as the praises have been for him right now and it's totally deserved to point out his performances.

It is not the stat (even though I personally dislike that they include corners and free kicks).
It is when people make statements like this. There is already a stat at opta called “chances created” (not “goal scoring chances created”) which is the sum of key passes and assists.

If two players have the stats:
Player A, 25 goals, 9 assists, 66 key passes
Player B, 1 goal, 5 assists, 66 key passes

I wouldn’t say they have, based on the stats, created the same amount of goal scoring chances.

One is a LB, the other basically has a free role in the attack of his team. Come on, don't be pedantic, it's pretty obvious why the stat is impressive, it has nothing to do with making Shaw look as if he is producing Messi's numbers, but from left back.

The role of the players doesn’t really decide whether an interpretation of the stats is correct or not.

If you look at only full backs, Shaw and Christian Günther in Freiburg are the only ones with more than 60 key passes so he’s clearly in top there.

I don't know what you are even arguing anymore. The first sentence is kind of bizarre to me.

Shaw is really amazing, by the way. Stats just prove what most of us see during the matches.

A guy on Twitter posts stats that are wrong. I pointed that out. You say it doesn’t matter, the stats are still impressive even though they are not true.

Shaw has been great. Don’t see any point making up stats to prove that.

Might need to be hooked off corners and set pieces again. They’ve become a bit stale after his month or two of quality deliveries

what I don’t get is why not just stick Bruno on corners on the left and shaw on the right? The out swingers nearly set up as many counters against us and fouls given away trying to get onto the ball. The in swinger is your only man. Bruno was pinging corners onto Maguires massive cranium for fun last season. When Telles came he was taking them on the left and Bruno on the right. It makes no sense to me
