I was quite adamant that Shaw needed to be replaced in the summer but ,as with a fair few other positions, that obviously never materialised.

Can quite easily imagine a scenario where he becomes a highly paid injury-prone lingering squad option in the Phil Jones mould.
Actually, that time is now.
Holy shit.

Been supporting and backing this guy ever since he signed with United, but time has come to clean house. He needs to be flogged to someone who would take him. Williams is not experienced enough yet, so I would try and get Chilwell before someone else snaps him up.

Man City 1:2 Man Utd
Solid today. Hard game when you’re just coming back from a long time off but did a great job.

He handled Silva with relative ease. Probably one of the toughest assignments in football currently with KDB and Silva on that side for most of the game but his positioning was generally good through out.

Ole took risk, but it was trust put in the right player.

Surprisngly solid today, especially with his recent fitness levels.

He really is brilliant defensively. He's good in the build-up, too. Just needs to work on his final ball and then we've got a class LB on our hands.

I can't remember him playing better for United in the years he's been here than he did today. I am not a huge believer in Shaw. His positioning often does my head in. However, today he faced Sterling, Silva and Mahrez at different times and in the main came out on top. Can't complain about that!

I don't know what to think anymore about replacing him or not. He is so underrated in defence. I really like how he is good in defence, tackles, has solid positioning and pace. We all rave about AWB but Shaw is not far in that area. In attack he is still meh.
But my main issue; can he stay fit?

I think that's spot on and was close to what I was going to say. He seemed to cope well in his position, but didn't look as convincing as AWB on the other side. But, to play against that kind of attacking talent and to keep them at bay for the duration of the game does take some doing. He's come back from an injury too, so I think that makes it better than it initially appears.

Something that I think goes unnoticed is his defending of the back post for crosses. He gets to the ball and clears it everytime.

Had a good game, considering he lacks match fitness. I was worried he would be the weak link, but it was actually our £80 million new signing that cost us a goal.

Regarding this, I've just seen he won 5 defensive aerial battles - the most from anyone on the pitch!

Why are people suprised he kept their attacking talent quiet? He absolutely handled Messi last year and did a job on Salah. There aren’t really that many tougher tests in football and he showed he can go toe to toe with the best and come out on top.

Agreed. He’s always been great defending when the ball is on the other side coming in.

His biggest issues remain staying fit, working on the crossing and making runs. He just does them randomly, he has no connection/chemistry to the left winger and really doesnt know much to do once he goes to the byline. His passing is decent, but the closer he goes to the opposition goal, the more clueless he gets with his final ball and link up play. Thats where he needs to improve on in terms of modern day fullbacks.

His only real problem defensively is that he consistently stands off the winger just a touch too much and lets them get a cross in. If he stayed just one step closer he'd stop much more of them, although obviously it would be coming with an increased risk of being dribbled past.

I thought he struggled against Bernardo Silva. One moment of good defending just after their goal.

Not an easy task up against Bernardo Silva, then Mahrez but Shaw was beaten too often for my liking.

I thought he struggled a lot, but did better near the end. City did create a lot down that wing though even if the final balls was lacking from them.

Interestingly enough Bissaka was actually beaten more than Shaw was according to Who Scored.

I do feel like City targeted him a bit with KDB dropping in to the space so he had two to worry about. Although Fred did a good job coming in to help as Rashford didn’t seem all that keen to get back.(possibly instruction)

Compare that to the other side and it was pretty much James, McT and Bissaka against Sterling and Angelino when he got forward.

Defending is a weird thing to judge because of you ask me when Sterling runs across the face of our goal and Bissaka eventually gets the toe on it by going through Sterling, Shaw plays a massive part in that as he does enough to stop Sterling getting the shot and it looks like he gets a very slight touch on the ball allowing Bissaka an in. Something like that isn’t logged in any stat but is a crucial bit of defending.

I'm a bit surprised about the praise. I mean for his first game after being out for so long he's done well to keep with the general tempo and contribute but I still thought he hadI too many lapses of bad positioning and concentration. It wasn't easy for him but I found he was generally a yard too slow to get touch tight and a bit unaware when balls were played behind him. Saying that, he did do well when he tucked in and supported the centre backs to make it compact, defending the bad post etc.

Need more minutes in his legs. Hopefully he can push finally (how many times have we said this sigh).

His positioning at times is so all over the place. Whenever he plays we have moments where he looks so far of his team's shape. He makes up with last ditch tackles, acceleration, and other stuff, but he is really far from a top LB. We need a new LB as soon as posssible.

What's bugging me the most about him is when he is in one on one situations he forgots about absolutely everything else, and opposition usually puts him out of position and then opts for easy pass which puts us in bad situation every time because he didn't watch any space but his player he was marking. Today City had so many great situations and passes behind Shaw, I can't understand how people say he's had a good game. It must be pain in the ass for our left CB to play with him.

Agreeing with the last 2 posts, I don't know where all this praise is coming from. He hardly ever puts in a tackle and you can be sure his attacker is getting a cross/pass off.

Very solid. Got the opportunity and he rose up to the challenge, kept Silva and Mahrez mostly at bay.

I wonder if Ole's praise of Williams has perhaps fired a rocket up him and potentially helped him as his slot is no longer as safe as when he only had Young as his back up. Yes Williams is still very raw and struggled in his last 2 games but the fact Ole seems a big fan of his has given Shaw that bit of competition he needs to give him a bit of a push.
Just hope it was a bit of cramp at the end and he isnt injured again.

He did quite well to be honest, I do think we're in need of an upgrade though, I don't he's the answer long term.

He did well/ok depending on the moment, honestly was surprised to see him starting given I thought Ole would go for Young over him. Looked knackered at the end though which was understandable.

IF we were to play 3 at the back more often I would test Shaw out as a LCB. He’s so solid defensively, big, strong and quick. We could buy a more attacking LB/LWB like Telles

I thought he did well. The only thing that frustrates me about Shaw, is I don't think he knows how good he COULD be.

If he got himself in prime physical shape and really imposed himself I think he could be fantastic. I dont see that happening though so i just hope he can just stay on the pitch as he's a solid LB.

Agreed and he's got the size for it. I'd rather him there than as a wingback in a 3-5-2.
