Mourinho quotes from today (Mirror):

He needs to improve. That is normal, he is a kid. I am not expecting a young player to be perfect.

A young player makes mistakes, a young players has things to learn, has things to develop. He needs to do that.

How many matches has he already played for me? A lot. He was injured playing not on the bench! I need him back.

This looks like the Mkhitarian 'unfolding' of sorts. Injury, then some time away from the starting XI to work on things. He's been hit and miss this season but in terms of instincts and fielding the position I think he's certainly good enough. If he can stay healthy, he will shine.

At first I was doubting his attitude but the fact that Mourinho has come out and said he needs him shows that he's very much wanted at the club, maybe some personal/fitness issues are hampering him this season.

I may be wrong but the leg break really appears to have taken its toll on Shaw both physically and mentally. He seems to always pick up some sort of niggling injury since he's been back and when he does play he doesn't seem the same player. He was bombing down the wing and into the box every game before the leg break and I haven't seen anywhere near the same threat from him since his return. Hopefully over time he can recover fully in terms of the fear of another major injury which may be causing him to take his foot off the gas and also hopefully get fully fit physically again.

All that and a new manager. The talent is there and I still think one day we'll be saying he's one of the best LB's in the world.

  • If Jose can manage to ease Shaw back into the squad the way he managed to with Mkhitaryan and Martial we'll have one hell of a left side with Pogba, Martial and Shaw. He's shown he has plenty of ability, I just hope he can start to rediscover his form, in Jose we trust!

He's our best left back. Out of form and lacking match sharpness, but needs games. I really hope 2017 he shows what he's made of.

He just needs to get his chance, take it and continue to train and be in shape. Basically need him to be the guy to go up and down which will free up our attackers to drift when needed. (esp creating the overlap).

He's potentially our best left back. He needs to massively improve his defensive positioning to get into a Jose team.

What is actually going on with Shaw? Is he at Fat Camp, or is he injured or "injured", meaning getting the Mkhitaryan treatment and coming back in a couple of weeks like the best left back in the world? I could live with that.

Dropped off the face of the earth at the moment, like Smalling did for so long.

With Darmian being so untrustworthy there, Blind having a bit of a dodgy spell, and Rojo only a decent option if we change tactics midgame, we could really do with him getting back.
Imagine if he could match Valencia's consistency!

Would be like a new signing!( in my best French accent)

Would also mean we're awash with pace, with Valencia, Shaw, Smalling/Bailly, Pogba (very mobile if anyone doesn't want to accept he has pace), Mhky, Rashford, Martial!

Phew.

A long way off the days we attempted to play Rooney, VP, Falcao and Mata together, or at least 3 from 4.

Yep. Can't wait until he's back. The team is doing well and I'd like to think he'll slot in with a little more comfort.

He's fallen off the face of the earth but if he's somehow back for Reading, that would be his chance. Darmian is next to Fellaini in being an eyesore and Blind isn't reliable enough, there's a definite improvement to be had.

Jose has made this side both quick and physical.

Great qualities to have in this league.

Wasn't Mourinho asked about this in a recent pre match press conference and said something along the lines of he's training well and not far off returning?

Yeah, said he was back in training but wasn't quite ready to start. Hopefully back in the lineup for Reading.

Really really hope he returns soon and comes back with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove and performs and give Jose a reason to keep on picking him. Basically how he was before his injury. Or a left sided Valencia.

Well if totally-inappropriate-for-the-position-and-much-maligned-anyway Antonio Valencia can become a great fullback, then already-a-great-fullback Luke Shaw certainly can!

He's not already great but can't wait till he's back to his best. Darmain and Blind are both limited in very different ways.

It's probably just me, but I'm wondering if there are question marks from Mou as to his long term commitment to the club and that's why he's not been played much.

He will be when he's back to his best though. We've seen more than enough to know that.

Yeah I agree but we will need to be patient and hopefully he comes back to the level before but it's not guaranteed unfortunately.

Kind of agree. Think there is definetly more to it then just injury that's prevented him from playing as much. One thing we know about Jose is he demands 110% from his players and if someone isn't showing that then they won't play so much. This might be harsh on Shaw here but I suspect he might be one of those. He has looked sluggish and at least a stone overweight.

how many games has Luke Shaw played in two seasons? A lot of people seem to be banking on his health being good over the next 5 seasons.

21. 13 this season. 8 last season.

41 in total in 3 seasons at United. As of now, he's already half way through his 5 year deal. Seems weird to put it like that, as we've barely seen him.

Only 21, so he's got a lot of time to put it right. I hope he returns soon and starts to put it right quickly.

We are missing an in form Shaw at LB. Blind or Rojo can't match his attacking threat imo.

I bring it up because...at 21 he's picking up a lot of injuries. His youth is the only thing keeping him from that Phil Jones reputation.

And people are counting on him being the future of the left back position. I don't see it. I'd sell him.

Genuine question: is he pacy?

Under LVG everyone was playing at a pedestrian pace, and under Mou he hasn't played much.

He broke his leg for feck sake.

I definitely wouldn't sell him. He is young, his body is still maturing. A lot of young players get niggly injuries and fitness issues early on, and then overcome them. We are perhaps seeing the same from Phil Jones right now, and Chris Smalling was similar. I certainly hope Shaw's fitness issues don't last as long as Phil Jones', of course. I want him to be given to get back on track before giving up on him.

The injury he had was horrific. I'd imagine there is a psychological barrier to overcome as well as fitness. He needs and deserves time.

Ever broken your leg before?

Very! Bale like. Apparently he was faster than Bale at Soton. But he has to watch his Rooney body carefully.

He's certainly pacy, we saw enough of him at Southampton and last season pre injury for that
