Wow. So just to recap some of the opinions. Rooney having a below par game, but actually assisting a goal and he had a terrible game, should be dropped and be done with.
Nani did absolutely nothing at all. I just checked the stats to be sure, Nani has not even created a single chance for his partners the whole match. Not to mention how many times he actually spoiled good attacking play by his team, like that time when he obstructed Coentrao, got the ball first, but his touch was heavy and he lost it. But some people say he had a decent game, other even saying he was "good". I mean, come on guys! Lets just simply say he was f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c! Fabulous, extremely unlucky to be on the loosing side. In fact he was so good, that Mueller while getting his MVP prize should feel ashamed he is getting it ahead of Nani.
Seriously though, i sometimes get a feeling some people believe that having 4-5 useless dribbles in the middle of the pitch is much more impressive than actually assisting a goal.

Thought he was one of Germany's best players, he tackled Coentrao when Portugal had their best chance of the match.

He'll prob get another new contract and a pay rise knowing us :)

Atleast he looked lively. Unlike Rooney who just looked pissed from the first whilst because he was asked to play on the left. It was a good assit but he did frig all else tbf.

That's what i was referring to. "Looked lively". I would prefer a player who actually creates goals, not just runs around lively while failing to find a teammate even once with a cross or to create at least one shooting chance for partners. Some attacking player he is.

He really wasn't decent.

It was a standard "not good Nani" performance. Poor decisions, lack of awareness of what was going on around him and trying to do too much on his own. Along with the usual two or three moments of brilliance which make all the rest of the stuff such a frustrating ball ache to watch.

As people keep saying, it's the knowledge of what he's capable of that hurts the most.

Still, it's just one game. Playing for a poor team, in sweltering heat, with only 10 men. Unfair to single him out for criticism but the performance wasn't worthy of praise either.

What did he do wrong today? I don't think he was great, but apart from that shit pass for Ronaldo(where he should actually have go for glory himself instead of passing it), I don't think he did anything wrong.
He did nothing too productive though, but no one did anyway, but he passed it quite good, was always available to pass to, and was very disciplined defensively in that unusual position for him.
If that was "not good Nani", how would you describe Ronaldo's performance today, or any other Portugal player?

Agreed, Berbatov rarely looked lively but would do nothing for 89 mins but 1 moment of class and he'd make or score a goal himself.

While someone like Downing at Liverpool often looked lively with 0 end product.

fecking hell. Not this again. Must Rooney be brought up in every other thread?

He was Portugals best player but wasn't that good. Passed it well, dribbled past players well enough just had a few dodgy final ball decisions as always. Given that the plan was to give it to Ronaldo and they were a man down with him in center midfield, he did well.

The only bad things he did actually was holding onto the ball and ruining that chance in the first half and bumping into coentrao.

He looked like Nani. At times played well and you wondered why he wasn't getting more chances last season when available, then at others he was making awful decisions. The chance to play in Ronaldo was still at 1-0, or 2-0? Might have changed the dynamics of the game, it's happened before in the tournament so far.
It's Nani. He's always been insanely greedy. His career at United has often been punctuated by my watching the game saying out loud 'play it.. Play.. It OH NANI SO GREEDY!'... It's just the way he plays.

I have noticed that Nani appears to play better when Ronaldo is not playing.
The game before the Sweden play-off and the friendly I saw recently being examples that come to mind.
having Ronaldo on your team is a blessing and a curse. As you said the tactic of just giving Ronaldo the ball at every opportunity can seriously hinder the creativity of other players.
Mind you when you watched how ronaldo destroyed Sweden almost single-handedly, one can see why they do it.

Of course, if you're lucky enough to have someone like Ronaldo in your team you'll want to get the most out of him. Watching them against Germany though (for 60 minutes at least, I got bored after that) I felt that Portugal relied too much on Ronaldo. Like you said there was little creativity in the attack from the other players. Compare it to Ronaldo at Real Madrid where they also have Benzema, Modric, Bale, Di Maria etc. who are also a threat to goal. Even though Ronaldo still gets most of the goals, they're not always relying on him to win a match.

Anyway Portugal should still progress to the final 16 and hopefully against USA and Ghana we'll see more from Nani as well as the rest of the attackers in that team.

The problem with Nani is that once he receives the ball he slows play down, thereby allowing the defense to rebuild itself. He literally stops and stands with the ball at his feet every single time, does a few shimmies with one leg and then makes an easy pass back to a teammate.

There is no penetration with Nani and you all know how much I like penetration!

It seems as if Nani just has to avoid fouling himself on the pitch to be deemed to have a "good game" these days.

Ask yourself WHY players do that. Not just Nani. They are waiting for some movement around them. If there is movement they will attempt the pass. No movement they will pass it backwards.

It's not the playing it backwards that's the issue. It's when he's running with the ball and the defence is stretch and, as the other guy explained, he'll suddenly stop allowing the opposition defence to get back. Nani often ignores movement to do his little stand still and shimmy stuff, by the time he finishes that often everything IS static but only as a result of the needless delay the guy imposes on the attacking move.

If he's impulsive he's often wildly inaccurate and if he uses his head he seems to always need far, far too much time to make his mind up as to what to do with the ball.

I think he was the only threat Portugal had and one of their best players even if that doesn't mean much in a 0-4 defeat.

Ronaldo was rubbish, spent all game sulking and breaking down attacks.
Hopefully this game will give him a little humility. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for him but it must truly be difficult to be his team-mate when he starts to sulk and tries to do everything himself.

He's carrying an utterly average team on his own.

There was one moment where his big donkey striker team mate had the ball, all he had to do was pass it to Ronaldo out left and they'd have a real threat. Instead, the big galoot paused for too long and got smashed to the floor and had to come off. Am sure Ronnie's sympathy level was high!

As for Pepe, an utter clown, they were already losing, but that made it a complete walkover.

They were all fairly terrible. Nani was better than all but two or three of them but let's not confuse that with him actually having a good game. Which was happening in this thread.

Its no point debating anything on this forum about Nani. People are just too polarized.
I joined this forum because I yearned for intelligent, knowledgeable and passionate debate about the club I love but that is never going to happen.
People here will not budge an inch from their stance. How many posters have said "you know what I was wrong, you have convinced me "?
Just make your point and move on.
I believe Nani is special. I hope LVG thinks so too. Those who don't agree will never change their minds.

One of few sensible posts in this thread.

I am confident LVG will revive Nani's career. The talent is clearly there and abundant.

Carragher destroyed his leg and his confidence when he injured him.

Agreed. Took him a whole 9 days to recover from that and he missed a league cup tie. I'm surprised anyone has the nerve to claim he should be over it three years later.

Maybe you should feck off out of this thread if you're just going to spout sarcastic bollocks about a player you don't rate over and over and over again. At least the other people who criticise him (Pogue) offer legitimate reasons instead of your inane bollocks.

I see people using the phrase "brain fart" and "typical Nani" when referring to his performances, I've seen players misplace passes and the game continues, anytime Nani does it, it's a "brain fart" or "typical Nani". He's not world class, but I don't know of any player that is expected to complete all passes, dribbles, counter and score and when he's not doing this, it's a brain fart. He didn't have a good game or a bad one either, misplaced few passes [just like everyone does], I still think there's something there that a manager who trusts him can bring out.

I agree legball. For some reason there are double standards with Nani because "we know he can do better".

That phrase sums up Wayne Rooney's career and he's still a celebrated player.

At the same time Nani's had plenty of performances that werent good enough.

He had 18 months of fantastic performances, and he's had plenty of performances which were good but some fans were annoyed by a couple of his passes and mark it down as a poor performance when it was mostly a good one. It could very well be that its best for Nani and United both that he gets a fresh start somewhere new because there are definitely players out there who are on a more positive career path ready to step in and perform right away.

Completely agree. A lot of fans just don't like him. His tendency for downright embarrassing play-acting, and staying on the floor when he's obviously not hurt rather than trying to win the ball back was never gonna endear him to the fans I suppose. When he got booed for shooting well over the bar from 40 yards you know that wouldn't have happened to someone like Valencia or Evra even though their form has been as patchy as Nani's.

Wherever you stand on the Nani question, if he puts on another season of poor displays it's lights out on his United days. We know about his outstanding ability, but he's got to find a way to produce end product.

This article in the Telegraph.

Reading this para, I just wonder whether he could perform the same trick with Nani.

Robben was extraordinary in his match-winning performance against Spain. His showing induced much mockery at Chelsea’s expense. After all, this was the club that let him go and signed in his stead Fernando Torres, currently laying claim to be recognised the tournament’s most insipid striker. While the contrast may have been all too evident on Saturday, this is more than a little unfair. The Robben of his time at Chelsea was nothing like the Robben who eviscerated the world champions in Salvador. A walking - or rather hobbling - medical dictionary, he was forever injured in Chelsea blue. It really wasn’t until he arrived at Bayern Munich that he gave us proper indication of what a player he can be.

Which was where he was united with Van Gaal. The Dutchman is a master of reinventing players. He transformed Robben from injury-prone makeweight into the devastating playmaker he now is.

Don't fully agree with how they paint it out. Robben was one of the best wingers in the world at Chelsea already in his first year there. Even though he ran in to a long-term injury not having his league debut until close to the second half of the season he gave Rooney a run for his money as the Young player of the year.

The year later he was included in the PFA team of the season and the European Sports Medias team of the year where he pushed out Thierry Henry who had a fantastic year in 05-06.

Robben hasn't improved much as a footballer, he hasn't even become less injury prone. Considering after LVG they have had two other coaches who are getting the exact same results as LVG got in terms of performance level. He just averaged 18 matches the two seasons LVG was there, so actually under LVG he had less matches per season than ever in his career.

The difference is that he has learnt to come back after injuries extremely quickly without losing form like the average football does. Now he can enter the team after a month away and he will perform well anyhow, not sure we can put that down to LVG though unless someone has a source stating Robben got that from him.

Nani set for United revival
  • Nani has reportedly been given a lifeline at Manchester United by new manager Louis Van Gaal
  • Nani struggled for form last season as a hamstring injury limited his contribution for the club. After signing a new five-year contract last September, he was left in the cold by David Moyes and started only seven league games
  • Nani was linked with a move to Serie A giants Juventus but The Sun claims the player's agent has been told by United chiefs that incoming boss Van Gaal rates his client highly and wants him to stay.
