We should have been working on it all summer - hopefully will have been. The state of our midfield should not be a surprise to Ole, yesterday was just the latest example.

What may I ask has given you so much confidence in them so far? Spending 150m on less important positions and then saying he's happy?
Even if we loaned out Jones, VDB, Lingard, James and Martial just to get them all off the wage bill that’s a saving of around £700K a week but I don’t see why we can’t move them permanently.
We signed Sancho and Varane, yes. After that we were looking to sell before buying a central midfielder with more defensive attributes but then Ronaldo almost signed for City to we prioritised our prestige as a club (along with 30 goals a season and dressing room influence).

apart from the fact that all the footballing people were pressing them to make the signing because of the prestige element of allowing our city rivals to sign a former player who is one of the best players in the world.
It would have diminished us as a club to get him go there.
I do think there is no reason we shouldnt be able to sign ronaldo and buy a midfielder. However i do think your argument that it him going to city would have diminished us as a club is a crock of shit. Its the kind of thinking that has held us back post fergie, too often we have been focussed on our legacy and stature rather than focussing on improving the team.

We clearly need a CDM, the only proper one we have is Matic and he's unfortunately past it. We can't play Pogba as part of a double pivot, that's obvious. McTominay isn't a CDM, I really like him but he's better further forward and is really a squad option to me. Fred just doesn't have the quality, he's a weak link.

We'll challenge, but with that CM we have currently, it'll be the downfall to winning it in my opinion.
Do you think not challenging for the title means we're not a serious football club? We all want to be winning trophies but the implication that us not buying a midfielder makes us a joke club, when we've spent over 100 million already this window is spoilt.
Do I think we'll win the league? No. But it's one of the most competitive leagues in the world and there are other very good sides in it. For what it's worth, I don't think we'll be a million miles away and I don't think that's anything to be ashamed of.

Don't believe another signing is gonna happen. This James thing is just about numbers and Ronaldo also coming in.
Why do fans think Saul is ever going to be comfortable as a holding defensive midfielder? He simply isn’t that kind of player.
I think lingard and James will move. Saul on loan would be worth the risk but it seems unlikely we will see any more players coming in.

Ndidi, Rice or Bissouma all massively improve us in that position.

I wouldn’t rule it out because we’ve done late and surprise business lots of times before but it does feel unlikely at this point

The problem some and even Ole may see with this is that it leaves attacking talents like Rashford and Sancho/Greenwood on the bench. But I think that's not much of a problem given Pogba could be off after this season and during this period Rashford will be recovering and Sancho will be adapting to the league
