Louis van Gaal refuses to accept he will leave Manchester United at the end of the season after insisting it was the club who wanted him to sign a three-year deal.

The Dutchman, who replaced David Moyes at Old Trafford in 2014, said on Friday he has been involved in planning for next season despite continued speculation over his future.

United have an FA Cup final against Crystal Palace to look forward to and still harbour hopes of finishing in the top four, but with Jose Mourinho reportedly keen to take over in the summer, Van Gaal is adamant he will still be there next season because it was always the plan.

"Of course they knew it would be hard. That is why they hired me. We spoke about that at the start and we have a process of three years. I [wanted] to sign for two years, they want three years, not I," he said.

"I have signed for three years so next year you see me again!

"I am a realistic man and I only speak about facts. There are a lot of positives but now we are one position less than last year and that position is very important for the club, the most important position.

"I'm always having that positive feeling because I have done it at every club and I'm here to do that for his club."

Can you imagine the reaction tomorrow night at the POTY dinner if he announces he is staying? I always watch it, but I cannot bring myself to do it this year. How they are going to spin that it's been successful I cannot comprehend.

It's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that he'll be here next season.

Our club is capable of doing anything, good or totally mental.

Not gonna watch it either. It would be too excruciating. But you are right he will manage to spin it as progress.

The thing that strikes me as odd is, he's repeatedly banged the drum about his 'three year philosophy', and his 'three year process'. Why then did the club have to persuade him to sign a three year contract rather than two?

I don't know if I'm reading it wrong, well surely I must be, but does he say 4th is the most important position for the club?!

Surely that should be 1st, no?

Imagine LVG staying for another year while he just revealed he only wanted 2 years contract before his retirement and some genius forced the third year on him and we're to stuck with him for another year. This is gonna be good. Popcorn time.

Maybe we are the naive ones?

I don't think it's naive for expecting someone who fails to meet basic targets relieved of their position. Every other club i can think of* would have sacked him months ago, at least we let him see out the season.

*Well, except Arsenal.

Sad to see a respected coach sounding as desperate as Moyes just before he got the sack.

At least, I hope he's getting the sack:nervous:

I'm completely certain that he's correct. There's not really been anything to suggest otherwise. It's not like there has been any kind of backlash from the fans really, so as far as the club are concerned, we're cool with him staying, and it does seem that his target was top four only, which he'll either get our come close to plus add the FA cup.

We should probably start paying more attention to the club and the manager than to the media if we want to know who's going to be here next season.

But we have no idea what the basic targets set up by the club was back when he signed the contract. Maybe top 4 was the basic target and if he manages that he will stay?

In which case whoever set the target should be looked at. I don't know why we'd consider 4th place acceptable in his second season, considering in this supposed three year process the emphasis is on yearly progression.

Making CL is of the utmost importance to the club that's why a top 4 finish could be acceptable to the men in charge. If we end up 4th or 3rd doesn't matter much in the long term as long as we don't miss out on CL football. This is just me speculating though, just like everyone else I think that the football has been dire and we should be looking for a new manager.

Preparing for pre season and now this. Doesn't sound a like a man going anywhere soon.

I'm not sure, i think a title challenge was the target this season. Especially in the context of money spent. Leicester will win the league, it's not as if the sides around us are unplayable. We should be challenging, this season more than ever. Yet to respond with just 40 goals and shit on a stick football? I can't imagine the board will see that as deserving of another year, Champions League or otherwise.

Director of football.........

That'd be absolutely disastrous. I'd actually prefer to survive another season with him and appoint a good manager next year (not Giggs) than have him here as DoF.

That said I fully expect him to stay another year and be replaced with Giggs.

You have to love him in some ways. Not a great manager like he used to be but still good value in the media.

I might be reading into this too much, but I think this interview confirms that he's a goner - he's simply trolling the media after the horrendous time he's had with them.

Essentially, I take this interview as meaning "I only wanted two years anyway, so feck you. I've steadied the ship and I'm now going to piss off into the sunset".

His demeanour over the past few press conferences is that of a defeated man who knows he's leaving. That brash arrogance and fighting talk is gone. He's accepted his fate and will walk away at the end of the season. We won't do a City by announcing a new manager, not until this season is over and done with.

Might well be that they don't care what fans worldwide think, but they are aware of it – unless they're purposely avoiding the whole Internet.

Everyone knows a majority of United's fans want LVG gone, and that a majority of those again want Mourinho to replace him. It's almost literally impossible for Woody and the owners not to be aware of this. But, again, whether this makes any difference to them is another question entirely.

Guess we got to stick with him until his deal runs out then, specially if we win the FA-Cup AND make top 4 aswell. I wonder what Mourinho thinks about all this now.

He added: “I am a realistic man and so I only speak about facts. I can’t say again ‘if, if’. The facts count and the fact is we are in the FA Cup final, the fact is we were in the Champions League, that we didn’t do last year. The fact is we went further in the Capital One Cup and so on.”

Benitez in disguise? :lol::lol::lol:

He'll be paid handsomely for his troubles if reports are to be believed. If van Gaal stays another season we will be well and truly fecked!! We can't afford to pass up on Mourinho if only to challenge Guardiola and Conte and not slip further behind other up and comings!

It's okay lads, we were in the CL and went further into the COC. The man clearly deserves to stay.

I still think that he is staying.

We are absolutely not sticking with this guy until his 3 year contract runs out. I'll drive him to the airport myself, if I have to.

I am sick and tired of:
  • the 1-0 brand of boring football
  • 4th place target every year
  • inability to get the best out of the players he has
  • his determination to sell our best (Galactico class) players
  • inability to use/create tactics which maximise the skill sets of each player in our squad
all this, while being given one of the biggest transfer kitties in the history of football.

He's like a bad smell which refuses to leave the premises.
