What were the options? Kagawa as CM? Reece James? There wasn't really much he can do, hope our injury situation gets better and we signing 2,3 players, otherwise it looks dark.
Anything. Litrally. Promote players from the academy. Truth be told LVG should have been looking for some stop gap options very early into the transfer window. De Jong would have been an astute signing.

Considering, there were people calling for Welbeck in midfield and the fact we have no other options in midfield, might make that decision a bit more sensible no?

Even if he's atrocious there, playing Rooney there would have made more sense and injected Adnan's pace and energy closer to goal. How many counter attacking movements did Rooney kill today ? Too fecking slow with his runs and with his decision making.

I hope LvG start showing the kind of balls and ruthlessness he's known for. Apart from De Gea, Blackett, Jones, Keane, Januzaj and Welbeck, the rest of them has let the shirt down.

Rather than giving players the choice to leave he should tell some of them in no uncertain terms to feck the feck off.

My admiration for Van Gaal is slowly declining. He needs to be more autocratic and make big decision that makes sense. I do not understand why he does not prioritize central midfielders and defenders as his most important signing(Moyes was looking to bring in kroos, Garay and Carvalho which would have helped). Moreover, he needs to make the big decision and drop one of Rooney and van Persie to add pace to our attack. In addition stop giving blind faith to the likes of cleverley, fletcher, Hernandez, Fellaini, etc. Very Dissappointed with his start in the bpl, but I expect nothing but a huge turnaround after spending near £200m fixing our squad.

Who is he supposed to play instead at the moment?
Did he really need a whole pre season to find out how piss poor those three are? Like i said, poor preparation from van Gaal. Should have made his decisions early, tell the likes of Cleverly, young and valencia that they have no future at the club, feck them off and at the very least sign short term midfield options if you can't get the Vidals of this world. De Jong would have been an important signing for example.

I think he should give Zaha a chance personally, a player like Zaha is what we was missing today, a player who can get behind a defense and rip new arseholes of opposition fullbacks.

I said to my friends when Van Gaal was appointed that I wasn't looking forward to it because I think he's over-rated as hell, not least by himself. He's a belligerent, egotistical wanker and he's not half as good a manager as he thinks he is. There's a reason only Tottenham were interested in him before we sacked Moyes.

I hope he comes good, obviously, and if he can do what he did at Bayern by building the next dynasty then that's amazing. But at the moment it's looking more like what he did at Barcelona: took the champions, and led them to seventeenth.

I think it is too early to say how the Van Gaal experiment will end up.

However I agree with you to an extent. His failures have been whitewashed on here to an extent. Excellent job he did with the Netherlands, but prior to Tottenham's interest in him, no one on here listed him as a candidate. I don't recall anyone asking for LVG on here after Ferguson announced his retirement. And now he is a top top manager rivaled by only a few. I don't buy it. And not much has been said about his failures at Bayern and Barcelona. He's heralded on here as the reason for those team's recent success. "Laying the foundations" or some other crap. That is almost akin to giving Klinsmann or Rijkaard credit for Bayern/Barcelona's recent periods of dominance.

He has it all to prove IMO. I have no issue giving him time, but I don't understand the overwhelming faith in him as a miracle worker.

This comes from someone who thinks our issues go back to before Moyes. I believe our team spine was allowed to deteriorate over the late Ferguson years. Moyes couldn't do much with it, he wasn't up to the task. There will be no quick fix, and I think LVG is the right man to try and fix things for future success. I have my doubts though (then again, I'm a pessimistic bastard from birth)

He's made the same mistake as Moyes. "I'll give everyone a fresh start and have a look at them myself"

Its been clear who is and isnt good enough for 18 months to 2 years. Instead of moving on from the likes of Antonio Valencia, we're still starting him and giving him a new contract.

The one positive you can say about that approach is that Ashley Young clicked in a new position and looks a decent option as a wingback. But so what? Is that really better than getting rid of Young and bringing in an actual wingback for £10 million or so? I dont think so. Its better for Ashley Young but he deserves no favours from United and neither do any of the other players who let the club down.

Van gaal was asked whether di maria is a player he likes to have, his answer was " yeah but i like messi also and vidal" :D

Quite a few had made up their minds early on with Moyes.
Many have now too. Even an equally poor year will be seen as the mighty van Gaal setting the foundations before he turns us back into the dominant force.

I still think many are forgetting van Gaal just isn't Sir Alex. Nothing's guaranteed any more. He's one of a number of good managers.

He couldn't do much with the midfield, I agree, but James should be have been a serious option going by how Young and Valencia were playing or switching to a back four so one of Blackett or Jones could play full back. The latter would have allowed Januzaj to play in his proper position at least.

We have a chance of getting a player .It's not September the first yet. Van Gaal speaking on Five live.

Rooney's performance, for a captain, was a disgraceful

Just watching his post match interview, the positive attitude and genuine excitement he had during his first press conference is gone. I don't think he realised just how big a job he had on his hands to turn this around.

I know this is the internet and it's really the 'in thing' taking up a contrarian stance on something you clearly know feck all about, but you can surely use a bit of wikipedia to use some actual legit facts rather than just making them up on the spot?

LVG post match comments:

- United and Sunderland were equal in the first half
- United improved in the second half
- United lacked the final 'creative' touch in the final third
- Re: Young dive - Ashley Young was 'jumping too much'. But contact was made after Young touched the ball, so could argue for a penalty. Denies he dived, but was booked for 'exaggerating'.
- RVP should have got a pen.
- Denied to comment on ADM, but admitted he likes him. He likes 'Messi and Vidal also'.

To all already questioning him i want to say that we need to support him and believe. We all saw that we can play better than that in pre-season games and we will start playing better after new players comes in and injured start to play. He said it will take time.

"Can I ask if you like Di Maria as a player?"
"Yes, but I also like Messi and Vidal"

Pre season is what it is, Young looked like one of our best players there. Real football is so different psychologically and many of our players, on top of being shit, are scared footballers.

The way the players have been programmed in recent years goes against everything Van Gaal believes football should be like. I'm sure he didn't know how deeply rooted basic things like lack of movement are in our players. It will take time, maybe more than he realized.

He'll teach us to play good football again. But it WILL take time.

One thing I would say is that it seems he needs to learn the hard way that Robin and Rooney together doesn't work. He said one of the reasons he doesn't use 4-3-3 is in order to use BOTH of them together. He'll realize eventually.

Added to this he said we were worse than last week.

Again, strange decisions today which surprise me. Kagawa could have been the one who brought something into this game I thought as Mata was poor while Januzaj at CM is just weird.

Kinell. Would you like fries with that.

a lot more relaxed about this result than last weeks.

Look at the players out. Look at the fact we ended up with our 5th an 6th choice centre backs out there, and a truly uninspired centre mid combo.

When we have the players back, and integrate Rojo and Di Maria we'll look a lot better.

Well, maybe we'll improve once we have all of Di Maria, Messi and Vidal starting.

Is it just me or are we actually looking worse this season? I know we were without our two summer signings, but last year at least our away form was good.
