London 2012 Olympic Competition

Who is winning in this race then? Are the Spanish ahead or what is happening because they keep cutting back and forth and it looks like the Spanish are ahead but they keep saying GB are close to winning.

So they'll keep the main sprinter (in this case Cavendish) in there slip stream the whole race, in order to save his energy for the end sprint?

But none of them (bar Cav) will win any medal for this?..That really is an incredible attitude to do all that work for someone else.

Thats cycling. As I stated earlier in the thread, riders will go their entire career riding for somebody else to take the spoils at the end. Thats the way it goes, but a win for Cavendish today will be a win for the whole of team GB. Given that Cavendish effectively gave up the green jersey for these boys in the tour, they sort of owe him as well.

Spain

Basically Spain have tried their luck by splitting from the main group (called the peloton). It's dangerous for Spain as by using more exertion early on to breakaway, they'll be reeled in by the end. But as the commentators are alluding to, they're looking decent enough to hang on and GB need to get a move on.

That really is a fantastic attitude. Got a whole new level of respect to these cyclists.

Just out of interest, why isn't it classed as a team sport? Would it not make more sense if the whole team won medals?

Cheers. How can GB gain on them? I don't understand why they don't just break away themselves, what's going on?

Because you have days where the breakaway wins and breakaways are usually down to individual effort rather than the team effort.

It would be nice though if the olympics would have a team time trial as it would give the whole team a chance at winning a gold medal.

They may have left it too late, it's a bit like distance running - you try and gauge when you go for it and catch up, banking on the athletes ahead to run out of steam. They're gonna have to put their foot down, as they're realising they can't go at a steady pace for their whole team to stick around (because they're getting knackered) to help out Cavendish in the end.

Surely it's an all or nothing situation now though, shouldn't they just go for it?

Ah I get it now, thanks.

Gotta say, I've never really been that into cycling before, but this is fantastic!

So are they all helping each other now just to catch Spain or what's going on here?

Aye - will be very touch to catch them up. Need people to really drive forward.

Ouch!

G'wan team GB - all that messing about in the leaders' pack will be a huge benefit to the guys at the back.

Ah feck, Cancellara's the guy who fell down. Would have been the hot favourite to win this.

I'd say 40-45 seconds after that crash. 10km to go

This race is not so good compared to the Tour De France though. For one thing Paul Sherwin and Phil Liggit are the best combination and do a tremendous job, and it's also more relaxed in terms of camera work.

This is fecking shit coverage, no info at all on what's happening.

How do you know when what match is on or follow a single sport?

Anyone know when Federer's match starts???

I've never really watched cycling or understood the team situation until an hour or so ago but this is really good stuff.

Yep same.

That's what I love about the Olympics, it always throws up a sport that's never caught my eye before, that I end up glued to.

I'm struggling to watch this. An Indian could start participating anytime. Or a sport I'm interested in could be shown anytime. I can't just keep watching it all day waiting for it to come around :(

Vinokurov's a good rider - great attack there.

I hope these two guys win, shown some bollocks there.
