Liverpool 2024-25 | Inevitably winning a..."treble"

A point away at Villa would ordinarily be a plus, but I can't help feeling Liverpool are doubting themselves now. A cup defeat, a draw, a very fortunate win at home v's Wolves. They're definitely feeling the pressure.

I can see Newcastle turning them over in the League Cup, and looking at their fixtures they've got some really tough games.

The game v's Arsenal at the back end of the season will be the title decider I think. By that time I think there'll only be 1-3 points between the sides, and it might be Arsenal in front then.

They don't help themselves by playing Nunez, he must miss at least 1 sitter every time I watch him. I called him spoon feet in another post yesterday, now I think I'll have to start calling him Spoonyfoot McEgghead as he misses headers just as badly as shots. They might as well have kept Origi or Borini, they were just as bad but a lot cheaper.
You keep Divock's name out of your mouth!!!

They may not have been at their best this season to prove it, but I still consider Arsenal to be the better side. That's three years running.
Agreed.

The Scousers, sprinting incessantly out of possession, bizarrely, have a stellar injury-prevention record in comparison to Arsenal, who have been decimated. Not to mention the peerless good fortune Liverpool enjoy from the match officials every week.

When both sides are at full strength and refereeing is consistent, Arsenal, for me, are the better team.

Look at the scousers last 4 goals and that shows you the stars have aligned for them this season. Deflections comical defensive errors, ricochets is back aswell.

Liverpool have still just lost 1 game in league this season and it's late February. Draws at Forest and Villa aren't ideal but are not bad results either when you consider they have at least 5 points more than Arsenal.

Somehow now Arsenal have game in hand. Which game is that?

They are home to Chelsea the same weekend Liverpool play League cup final.

Technically their game against Chelsea I suppose, since the game last night was brought forward from the League Cup final date.

Thanks.

Honestly looking at both teams' fixtures, Arsenal will have to win next 4 (West Ham, Forest, United, Chelsea) with Liverpool losing or drawing one from their next 3 (City, Newcastle, Southampton) for Arsenal to have a realistic chance imo. Then Saka and Martinelli come back and they can improve quality of their performances from April until the end of the season. City are currently really poor so even though it's at the Etihad you'd still expect Liverpool to win it and Newcastle are capable of big defeats as their games vs Bournemouth and City recently showed. Arsenal should be beating West Ham, United and Chelsea even with injuries but Forest away is a tricky one.

Prime City would catch Liverpool winning 11-12 games in a row or something but Arsenal with Saka and few other attacking players out, doubt it.

Yeah, well summarized.

Winning the next four is a huge ask for Arsenal right now and that's the biggest problem. We're missing four of our first five forwards. Our best striking option is a big slow central midfielder and our most threatening attacker is a 17-year-old who got his first PL start last month. There's absolutely no attacking bench and we've got a CL R16 tie bracketed around two of these matches.

If we can somehow get to the international break within touching distance while also keeping everybody healthy it will be on because Liverpool have a tougher run in and we'll have Saka and Martinelli back. But it will be very hard and we'll need to win a lot of 1-0 or 2-1 matches and get timely goals from set pieces, penalties, deflections, etc while also banking on Liverpool stumbling at least once.

I'd have Origi over Nunez at this point.

Yes he was lackadaisical and could have runs of form where he was invisible, especially compared to Nunez, but he scored some very big goals when the chips were down.

Jota had a few good chances he should have scored but he's usually reliable at taking them. You need to hope you can keep two of Diaz/Jota/Gakpo on the pitch because Nunez can't be relied on.

The subs killed your momentum yesterday, Trent coming off particularly.

I see liverpool fans crowing that they had 4 players that had played the most games in the top ten for 2024, this including internationals
No other team had more than one.
Gakpo 71 number 1
Diaz 68 number 5
Van Dijk 67 number 6
Macallister 66 number 10
Got to love their fantastic fitness levels!

We're 20th for ground covered this season.

They have the most attackers ..
So they are winning this easily ..
Darwin might not have scored yesterday.. but one of those days when nothing is working .. he will pop in.. to surprise everybody..
They have around 5-6 strikers/attacking players with various skills sets ..
Arsenal have Merino..
They are winning the league for sure ..I don't see anybody catching them..

I'm by no means saying Jota is anywhere close to as bad as Nunez in front of goal, but I think his goalscoring reliability is pretty overrated at this point.

Wouldn't be overly bothered if we tried to replace him in the summer - more so due to injuries than anything else, but people forget how patchy he can be in front of goal too. He almost went a full calendar year without scoring with us at one point. When he's in form he's deadly but he takes too long to play himself back into form.

You'd know.
Eh? I’m human. Of course I suffer from confirmation bias all the time. I just meant you didn’t notice it because the table was supporting your side of the current discussion so there was no need to look closer. Had nothing to do with football tribalism.

Haha I know, just kidding around. Sums me up in all walks of life.

I'm not a Liverpool fan so I can say it as I see it. Absolutely woeful player that's been given cult status due to scoring some massive goals, one of which was a tap in pretty much on the goal line, even Nunez couldn't have missed it.

The guy has been at Forest for two years, scored a whole 0 goals in 20 appearances. Bagged 2 at Milan in 27 games. 3 in 32 for Belgium.

79 games, 5 goals. 49 goals in his whole senior career, and he's been a pro for 13 years.

I get he's a terrace favourite, but man he's been stealing a living.

They will win the League as Arsenal are not consistent enough to close the gap, but there is still a chance that one of the Spanish teams can prevent them from winning the Champions League.

Look, I completely agree....but still, there's the big goals in big games. Can't beat a cult hero, it's part of why we all love the game so much

Sad thing is that Origi actually looked like a very very good striker in Klopp's first season. Benched Benteke from the start (which I guess dosen't say a whole lot). Was never the same after the Funes Mori injury and Firmino became the starting 9, but a good impact sub for many years.

Tough draw that for Liverpool but cracking tie for the neutrals - I'd probably make the winner of that favourites to win the competition outright.

PSG look excellent at the moment IMO, very fluid in attack with that front 3 of Kvara, Dembele and Barcola and they have great controllers in midfield.

2nd leg at Anfield is always a big advantage. Find the atmosphere there overrated but on CL nights it can be electric no doubt.

I think their chances of winning the Champions League have gone down considerably after that draw.
Hard to disagree, frustrating that coming first hasn't been rewarded with anything.

I'm happy with getting the 2nd leg at home though, if we can bring PSG back to Anfield level, I'll be confident.

We're on the much tougher side of the draw though if we do get to the semis.

Love that finishing 1st gave them feck all advantage.

PSG
VILLA
REAL

That’ll be a nice little tester for the head.
