Liverpool 2024-25 | Inevitable march to the PL title

I’m glad about this week. Some of the chat about this Liverpool team has been ludicrous. Way over the top. Finally, Liverpool fans and the media mouthpieces can settle down.

Bottled twice this week.

And whilst I can’t take much away from their league form, it’s a lot easier to not fold under pressure when there is none; when your arch rival is essentially relegation fodder, and your other competition could barely win a game for like two months, and another is Arsenal managed by Arteta.

Said it weeks ago but they give such Man Utd 2013 vibes.

An aging squad heavily reliant on 2 or 3 outstanding players and in particular one outstanding striker cruise to the title despite not being anything special. The competition in the league all have poor seasons. One final hurrah.

If VVD and Salah both leave in the summer it's a huge task for Slot to replace them.

Now they can focus on the league. Or their navels. Or whatever.

Definitely have the EPL locked up in their trophy cabinet now, though. You can't possibly lose a 12 point lead in 9 games.

Congratulations.

They're a good-but-nothing-special team that just got the perfect storm of fortune in the league - two main rivals decimated by injuries, a near perfect health record among their own starting field players, leading the league in penalties awarded, Mo Salah having one of the greatest PL seasons of all time.

I actually think the team they resemble the most in some ways is United in Fergie's last year - a good-but-not-great team (especially compared to United sides past) dependent on a lot of aging players that walked the league largely because all their main rivals totally fell off and they got an absolute world class season out of RVP. I don't think that United side got the same level of health luck as this year's Liverpool and a quick check shows they weren't particularly favored in penalty decisions. But its the same kind of dynamic.

This is the lowest quality premier league there’s ever been. I honestly don’t think winning it is that much of an achievement, compared to other years.

But but but we’re United fans so we’re all just jealous when we say the standard of champions and the league this year is average.
Something like that…
@giorno thoughts on that absolutely rotten cup final performance by liverpool ?

Why would I have an opinion on a game I didn't give a shit about?

Well done to Liverpool. Won the Premiership in a year where everyone is shit, and their 3 best players desperately tried to win a contract they have yet to be offered. feck them. They're done next year.

They will of course be happy with winning the league, but it most be kinda boring, having nothing to do for the last two months of the season.

Its just running down the clock now, and i suppose, see if Salah breaks some records.

A special team was playing, thought you’d be interested…what with it being a cup final.
If it was me and I was being condescending about how special a team was id probably watch them … in a cup final.

How they are performing now is actually what I expected their season was going to be. They way overperformed in the first 60% of the season and were helped by the other big 6 clubs having bad to average seasons.

Refreeing decisions going their way, other teams struggling, relatively injury free, a few players having blinders have made them look a lot better.

I agree. It's Klopp’s team, and Klopp’s players.

Slot has been riding Klopp’s coattails this entire time. But it's not going to last forever.

From the inevitable quadruple to the probable onetuple.
Typical Liverpool - too much hype - very little delivery.

All the Liverpool influencers on youtube/twitter are relentlessly parroting these falsehoods:

1. TAA is the best ever RB in the history of the PL - Southgate wouldn't even start him at the Euro.
2. Salah is the best player / forward in the history of the PL - Is he really better than Henry, Rooney, Ronaldo ?
3. VVD is the best CB in the history of the PL - He is in the conversation, I would agree.
4. Alisson is the best GK in the history of the PL - He is not even the best in his generation.

Please be a little more sensible.

Genuine question here, does winning the league with several games to go take a bit of the spontaneous euphoria out winning the league?

We've known they are going to win the league since at least February, and they'll be chuffed to win the league of course. But there's been no real race, no drama, no jeopardy, no pit of the stomach nervousness that each game is a must win.

Does that dilute the feeling somewhat, or would folk prefer to win at a canter so they can enjoy it with the jeopardy basically been removed?

I mean when you’ve only had one in 35 years, you take them however they come.

Why would it dilute the feeling?

2020 and having to celebrate in an empty stadium and with no trophy parade must have diluted the feeling for the fans. I'm sure they'll revel in this title victory and take out a double parade if they could.

It definitely dilutes a bit of the euphoria, but it extends a lot of the joy. Most games feel like a party in the run in and that doesn’t get old. But you never quite get the peak you hope for! Especially when the rest of your season unravels, which seems strangely common for teams who win the league at a canter. Either they’ve peaked too early, or when the big games come they just can’t rise to that level when they’ve been able to relax even for a few weeks in the league. Or because they’re winning at a canter purely because the domestic competition is so bad.

If you're answering generally, then yes, absolutely. Some Utd fans on here are probably better off answering this question but a few limiting factors are:
1) is it your first league title?
2) has it been ages since your last one?
3) were you in for other trophies?
4) were you expected to win any others?
5) specific to Liverpool, did you get a full trophy parade in front of your fans or did COVID ruin that a bit?

Could have been a lot more but assuming we win the league, I'll still be delighted when it's confirmed.

They're currently 12 and a half points ahead of Arsenal with 9 games left to play.

Remaining fixtures for Liverpool: Everton(h), Fulham(a), West Ham (h), Leicester(a), Spurs(h),Chelsea(a), Arsenal(h), Brighton(a) and Crystal Palace(h)

Remaining fixtures for Arsenal: Fulham(h), Everton(a), Brentford(h),Ipswich(a),Palace(h), Bournemouth(h), Liverpool(a),Newcastle(h), Southampton(a)

If Arsenal win their next six games and Liverpool drop points in three of the next six, lets say draw vs Fulham away and Spurs home and lose to Chelsea away suddenly the Arsenal game becomes very interesting. It is Arsenal who can't be counting on for anything except choking when it matters but they are far enough back that they might not feel that pressure. I'd say we have a 5% chance of the most hilarious end to the season happening. Let's hope Moyes can nick a result at Anfield.

Don't do it to yourself. If it was City chasing Liverpool then maybe there'd be a thread of hope to cling to, but it's Arsenal. The title is already over.

Some next level jinxing going on.

Yeah, winning on the last day after a tight race hits different. Kind of condenses the enjoyment into a single moment. In a title race like this some small part of you will be celebrating weeks / months leading up to it being confirmed

Arsenal simply don’t have it in them to capitalise even if Liverpool do take a dip in the league.

You can see them dropping more points in pretty much any of their remaining games.

People posting Liverpool's run-in ignoring that Arsenal also have to win their matches.

I can see a lot of Liverpool fans wetting their diapers due to their recent form but only for them to look back and start laughing profusely seeing it's only Arsenal who are chasing them, knowing that Arsenal always bottle it.

Congratulations to Liverpool on winning the Premier League 2024/25. This one surely can't slip, at least.
If they dropped a 12 point lead with 11 games to go, it'd be one for the history books and they'd never live it down. Opposition fans would be making chants about it for decades.

It'd honestly be just like Arsenal to get within three points, then lose at Anfield.

We had plenty of seasons like this under SAF: stroll to the title while underperforming in Europe. We also heard the comments "weakest team, weakest league etc. etc.". They almost performed too well early in the season - even in the champions league - with their dip happening at the worst time in terms of cups.

Basically this. At this point it'll feel like a massive relief if we get it over the line, I don't care when and how. Re: the manner in which you win it, winning it after a tight title race on the last day is obviously a better feeling but I'll take any league title we can get.

Luckily we now have more than two weeks to get rested, gather ourselves and tackle the last part of the season. And our league form hasn't been nearly as bad as our performances against PSG and Newcastle either so at least there's that. Our last four league games include a win against Southampton that we made harder than it needed to be, convicing win against Newcastle (which makes yesterday even more frustrating), easy win at City and a draw at Villa in a game we should've/could've won. We really need 3 points against Everton though who'll do anything to avoid that, because Arsenal play before us and if we fail to win (or lose) it's a single-digit gap again.

We have Everton, Fulham, West Ham and Leicester before we have Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal. If we get 9 or 10 out of 12 from those first 4 games it'll be a 9-point gap with 5 games to go - and that's if Arsenal stays perfect and they have two Madrid games included in that run-in as well. Unlike most others I can't see them any / too many points against Fulham, Everton, Brentford, Ipswich and Palace in their next 5.

Still in a position that we should be able to see it out but suddenly feels too tight for comfort, unfortunately.

They'll win the title. Dropping out of CL and losing last night takes a bit of a glance of this year but they'll console themselves with the league. Unfortunately it will be 20-20 and hopefully they wont be in the mix next season.

Liverpool are a weird team. They win too much to be called bottlers but they should have won significantly more trophies over the last 10 years than they have done. I think we've won as much as them haven't we? Albeit without the 2 major honours. Even a couple of the cups they won were on penalties after goalless draws.

I keep saying this but if City were in Arsenal's position I'd be backing them. Arsenal don't have it in them to chase them down.

Arsenal have won one of their last four plus they have Madrid to play in the Champions League. Can you honestly see them winning six in a row?

If this was Arsenal of the last two seasons, this would be a real possibility. But our forward line (which already needed strengthening) is absolutely decimated.

Plus Salah is the ultimate flat track bully this season. He’ll ensure they win the games they should be winning and tie things up very quickly.

Unfortunately.
