Liverpool 2014/15 | WARNING: Contains strong amounts of Scouse nonsense

Hendo is a Fletcher level player (before he became utter toss), minus the injuries. Great to have.
Henderson is a good player but he is not close the highest level which Fletcher displayed before his illness ruined him,

Messi is more of a #9 these days and Ronaldo was never a #10
So by that logic, how can Aguero be world class by your strict definition? Silva at #10 and Messi at #9 means you are surely playing a 4231 system (Ronaldo one of the two wide attackers?) - no room for Aguero in your World XI = not World Class! :)

And we still need to work out where to fit Sterling and Coutinho in yet...

Silva mostly plays on the left and drifts in though. I think Aguero is the best non-Messi striker in the world so he'd definitely fit in. There's more than one formation you can play, you know.

So who are the 11 world class players? Must be quite weird having to switch players in and out. No other keeper will be world class as long as Neuer maintains his form. A maximum of 2 fullbacks can be world class and a maximum of three centerbacks. I politely suggest you change your defnition of world class ;)

I politely decline, but thanks for asking.

World-class basically means the absolute elite of world football, it's the highest praise you can give to a player. If anything I think the term is used far too loosely, especially on here.

Anyway, I said later on that maybe a fairer approach would be a World 23 man squad, in which case you'd have the likes of DDG, Courtois and Silva too.

Yeah the squad approach is better. Yeah i agree superlatives have become way too commonplace and not just in football. Think The Oatmeal had a nice comic on it a while back.

What would such a squad look like? Probably based on form over the past 18 - 24 months?

GK:
Neuer, DDG, Courtois

Defenders:
CB
- Godin, Silva, Boateng, Pepe
Fullback - Alaba, Lahm, Zabaleta, Felipe Luis

Midfielders (incl. "playermakers"/wingers):
Modric, Busquets, Mascherano, Silva, Kroos, AdM

Attackers (CF's, SS and Wide forwards):
Messi, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovich, Suarez, Robben, Aguero

Pointers - I found it difficult to decide between 1 of:
Pepe/Ramos
Felipe Luis/Marcelo/Carvajal/Azpilicueta
Neymar/Aguero
AdM/Schweinsteiger
Vidal/Modric or Busquets

Players I left out:
Hazard, Kompany, Fabregas, Yaya

Good squad. No one is ever going to agree on the full 23 but I don't think your list would be too far off mine.

Yeah man, fortunately 16-18 of that 23 picks themselves IMO. Then as you mentioned, the rest is down to a bit of personal preference. You can easily imagine that some would have Hummels/Reus in there etc - even though they've been injured / shit this season.

Good result. Ibe, Sakho, Skrtel, Mignolet and Henderson all did well. Balotelli looked bright when he came on and Lovren looked calm when he came on too. Not great games from Can, Lallana, Allen or Sturridge, but oh well!

Gerrard also essentially gave it away that Ibe will be signing a new contract, so that is more fantastic news.

Does that make you more worried about Sterling? That Ibe is open to his team mates about signing a new deal and Sterling obviously doesn't want to talk about it.

He's got a while left on his deal so he's probably using the time to make the board sweat but it doesn't seem to be getting closer does it?

No, why would that make me worried? I'm confident that Sterling will sign a new deal, as will Henderson. I doubt Gerrard got the information about Ibe's new deal from Ibe.

No idea if it's getting closer. Our owners and manager have both recently said that they expect Sterling to sign a new deal soon, so I'm quite content to believe them at the moment until something else suggests that he won't.

Good : Ibe (MoM), Sakho, Ming (very good save), Moreno, Balo
Ave : Lallana, Allen, Coutinho, Skrtel, Lovren
Poor : Hendo
Very Poor (aka abysmal): Can, Sturridge.

We spend far too much time receiving the ball with our backs to goal and Sturridge was horrendously greedy (put that down to being overly keen he is back playing again) !
Ibe had no end product in the first half, despite absolutely tormenting their defence .. in the second he was much better (words of wisdom at HT perhaps) and winning the penalty makes him a worthy MoM. He is far more direct, and faster, than Sterling. Ibe ... Sturridge ... Sterling is an extremely pacey and tricky front line.

Good win. I can't see us not scoring in Istanbul, which will make it very difficult for them.

Absolutely loved Hendersons Ronaldo-esque stance at the end before barely lifting the free kick off the ground. Some baller that fella.

If you're going to take a shite free kick then Cristiano's stance is a good one to mimic in fairness.

I'd put Coutinho under Poor alongside Hendo. He had opportunities to pass but kept trying to nutmeg or twist the same person again and again. Missed many openings for clear progressive passes.

Allen did a decent job defensively and Lallana did a lot of unnoticed good work working in the 'pockets of space'. Not his fault whenever he gave it to Can, Sturridge or Coutinho they fcked up every move.

Southampton will have a taster of Sterling Sturridge and Ibe from the start. Hehehe. Can't wait. Who to double man mark, who to double man mark? Choices, choices, choices. :D

I'd say Messi is much more of a #10 right now than he ever was. With an ageing Xavi and an off color Iniesta, he's Barça's primary playmaker and the player who makes it all tick for Barca right now. It's hard to classify him under a rigid role but he's much more of a #10 than a #9 currently.

He's actually being played as a right sided forward of sorts recently, to accommodate Suárez and boy is Neymar reaping the rewards (he has been all season in fairness).

He's looked decent for our reserves but was a bit shit against Utd in the last reserves game. I don't rate him that highly (yet) but if he's taken Ibe's rise as a reason to give it 110% then good on him. And us. Doesn't excite me like Ibe/Sterling did though. Wilson's my next bit of excitement. ;)

For the return leg in Istanbul (I think their #1 keeper will still be out too) : -

Besiktas are facing a defensive crisis ahead of next Thursday’s Europa League second leg with Liverpool in Istanbul.

Both left-back Ramon Motta and centre-back Ersan Gulum will miss the game due to suspension after picking up bookings at Anfield.

Motta’s deputy Ismail Koybasi faces a race against time to prove his fitness, while the absence of the experienced Gulum will lead to a call-up for rookie Atinc Nukan.

On top of that they mentioned in the last game that Besiktas play their 'home' games in different stadiums due to their own one being developed. And they have poor records in most of them, not enjoying the journey, pitch, etc. All this can lead to complacency on our behalf though, we need to ensure we score one goal to leave them needing three.

I despise Liverpool FC and I can't stand the city.

However, they are coming into great form, Rodgers has turned it around and they will dick on us at Anfield

I think we can all agree that Liverpool are cnuts and Rodgers is a twat, but credit where it's due. It looked like he was a few games away from the sack not so long ago, has done an excellent job to turn it around for them. It's going to be a great game at Southampton today, I fancy either a draw or a Liverpool win. Although, I'd rather Southampton won for obvious reasons.

Ha ha - this from another poster on another forum upon seeing our team vs Saints :

When we get the ball our 7 attacking midfielders will simultaneously make off the ball runs drawing defenders out of position until mignolet strolls up the pitch to score completely unnoticed.

Great result to wrap up what has been the perfect round of results for us. Passed Spurs, a point behind Southampton and two points off United.

Henderson, Skrtel and Mignolet were the standouts, along with our secret weapon, Kevin Friend.

Spurs might bottle it, but not a chance you're getting 6 points from those two games.

Is there not?

It seems Brendan 'Kevin Keegan' Rodgers does indeed have the ability to coach a side capable of defending.
