Ólafur Arnalds - Found Songs: Boring faux-classical stuff. Sounds like someone's recorded the kind of piano exercises you get set at grade three lessons at half speed with some uninspired string arrangements. Music for BBC nature documentaries.

I saw her at the Roadhouse ages ago supporting Sleater-Kinney (I think).
I am a wee bit excited. The reason is a new band called Wild Flag. They are Mary Timony (Mary Timony, Helium, etc), Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney), Janet Weiss (S-K) and Rebecca Cole (unknown to me, they say she's from The Minders, apparently part of the Elephant 6 collective). They are going to tour USA's west coast and probably release an album in 2011.

Has S-K been posted yet? If not I think it's reasonable to celebrate these news with One Beat at midnight.

Thought this one started a little slow and took me a while to get into, but I think I really liked it. I wouldn't say great on first listen, so I'll have to listen again at some point. I've added it to my playlist at least.
Aye, it's a grower. It's grown pretty fecking huge in my ears, but it took some time.

Haven't quite had the opportunity to catch up with this thread lately, hopefully I can find the time soon.

Good news. I wanted to call my daughter Carrie after Ms Brownstein but I was over-ruled. I'll still buy her a Rickenbacker though...

As for One Beat... Not my favourite SK album (The Hot Rock is), but go ahead.

I loved the first track, but I didn't think the others were as good - although I listened early in the morning and decided I had to get to bed - will listen to the rest later...

This is really my kind of thing, dark and brooding electronica, it's really rather good, needs volume though.

It seems a few are trying to 'out obscure' others with their selections and if I'm being honest, I'm completely under-whelmed.

Music is about having fun and enjoyment, so I defy anyone not to tap their foot at Beating Heart Baby.

Decadence - Head Automatica - Spotify

Daryl Palumbo, I salute you for this album.

Gave this one a try. Not a fan. It started off alright, sounded like it was just going to be quite a fun album to listen to, without being anythign special. Very soon got bored though, really nothing special at all.

Album 80:

Bishop Allen - Charm School
(2003)

bishop-allen-charm-school-album-cover-48098.jpeg

Really liked this one. It's just one of those nice and happy albums. I could happily listen to this sort of music all day long with a smile on my face. Agree with you on 'Busted Heart' too, thought that was a delightful little tune, also really liked 'Things Are What You Make of Them' and 'Penitentiary Bound'. I think their sound grew on me more and more as the album went on too, will definitely give it a second go.

Also, gave NWA a miss now to help me catch up, but it is, of course, a brilliant record. 'Express Yourself' remains one of my all-time favourite songs, one of those I just never seem to get bored of.

Myoclonic Jerks
Grooming Response (**.017)

Myoclonic Jerks is Dan Nielsen when he’s alone in his basement or out in public incognito. He came across the name in Don Delillo’s “White Noise.” He has been known to exhibit mild contempt for anyone who has not read that book. The point of Myoclonic Jerks music is charming songs recorded in a charming yet crappy way. The intended effect is that feeling when you’re right on the edge of sleep and you feel like you’re falling.
this is a pretty apt description of what to expect.

The more downtempo tracks were good, but some of it was a bit all over the place and unfocused for my tastes.

Ye it does go all over the place in terms of tempo, from very chilled dub and triphop via hiphop to jungle - but that is one of the reasons I like it!

You might enjoy some of these mixes then:

Low End Theory Podcast

I think I have been pointed in the direction of these before - will check it out.

Thanks Doogie.

This!

Slightly more up-beat (by my standards at least):

Quasi - American Gong

KRS512_cover.jpg

Wasn't sure what to make of this. I liked it at points for sure, but there were sections I really lost interest, which made it a tough listen as an album. I think there's a good 4 or 5 tracks I really like in there surrounded by a bunch that I'm not so keen on. Not that there was much particularly bad there, it just kind of drifted between good and 'meh'.

I wouldn't disagree with that really - there are a couple of "skippers" on there, but some great tracks, too. You could condense down all the Quasi albums into 2 or 3 really good ones. Check out Featuring Birds by them though, if you liked some of this.

Nero's Day At Disneyland - From Rotting Fantasylands (2009)
I thought you'd like to know I've bought this one.

I haven't been able to check out anything else in this thread for a while since I've started to buy more music than I have time to listen to again. :nervous:

Big Star - Third/Sister Lovers

This was ok - 3/4 decent tracks but the rest was pretty average

Album 91

Ólafur Arnalds - Found Songs (2009)

Also ok - my immediate reaction was that is was a poor man's Sigur Ros, but had a couple of listens and it grew on me. However, it does have a bit of a basic and unfinished feel to it - which is probably to be expected with the whole 1 track per day thing.

Yeah, annoying that it was the only spotify option, his second album Variations in static is far better. Like you say, it's the 1 track in 1 day thing that makes them all seem a bit basic and unfinished

Quick listens and comments:

Olafur was quite beautiful, but not something I'm listening to these days. I used to though. That's not meant to be a slight ("I now know better"), it's just a description of a change of interest, I suppose. (Not just that. I think lengthy exposure to that sort of stuff becomes boring.) (Uh, this is based on the YT posted above. The entire album will have to wait.)

Nero's Day at Disneyland sounds like an instrumental, IDM version of Mindless Self Indulgence. Fun, in short. Occasionally a lot of fun!

DJ Shadow I know from before. It's alright, but I'm not a big fan. (Having heard it lots many years ago I didn't even listen now, but I seem to remember one of the songs off it is excellent?)

Magical Light of Saba. Not my cup of tea. Boring.

Nosaj. Same as above, but a bit better.

Merry Airbrakes - Merry Airbrakes
merry20airbrakes2020fro.jpg

I liked this. Don't really know what else to say, it's pretty much what you'd expect it to be, so it's nothing special, but it is enjoyable all the same.

Album 87

The Antlers Hospice
(2009)

hospice_the_antlers.png

This is very good. I'd heard of the album before but never actually gave it a try. Would've been even better was I not interrupted by Tim Wheeler from Ash telling me what he's up to these days, feckin Spotify.

Le Peuple De L'Herbe - PH Test / Two (2002)

ph-test-2-350x350-devant.jpg

I really enjoyed this. Having read everyone else's views I didn't expect to that much, but it was actually pretty good. I see what others were sayng about it being a little erratic and the down tempo tracks are definitely the stronger ones, but I enjoyed the whole thing really.

Some Japanese indie-electro nonsense for you cooler-than-thou hipsters:

Cornelius - Fantasma

That album is already in my CD collection, I've seen him live a couple of times as well and he puts on a good show - will have a listen anyway for old times sake but I know it well!

He's got some great remix albums out there which are worth checking out

Glad to hear it! All their stuff is on Spotify and I've been checking out their other releases myself recently - they have a good live album on there, would like to see them myself but they rarely seem to come to the UK.
