Lisandro Martinez | Signs for United

There’s going to be a game where we play 5ft 7 Malacia next to 5ft 9 Martinez and Chris Wood is going to absolutely maul them.
It’s ok, we’ll be playing such a high line against slow strikers that his knock ons from the centre circle will have little affect

I don’t think it’s that important a quality really. When do you ever see Stones, Laporte or Dias defending 1v1? If we want to play a high line it’s the coach’s job to ensure our defenders aren’t left isolated.
Its an extremely important quality. In teams that play such a high line, they all have at least 1v1 specialist. Liverpool have Konate and VVD who are exceptional at this and City have Kyle Walker. Chelsea had Rudiger.

No matter how organised your defence is, you will eventually be exposed and that's where you need these 1v1 experts as an insurance policy to bail you out.

Saying that Martinez is not on the same level as the players I mentioned above.

Bailly>Lindelof in ability.

Lindelof>Bailly in fitness.

Every time Bailly has played he's been fantastic but he can't stay fit.

That's not true. He CAN be fantastic and at his best, he's better than Lindelof at his best. But he's also erratic, a bit mad, and his decison making at times is mind boggling. Granted, none of our CB's are brillaint.

So perhaps I should rephrase what I said. Baily is probably the beter CB at his best, but he's also inconsistent both in terms of his performances and injuries. Whereas I find Lindelof to be consistently solid, and also more reliable in terms of his availabilty.

I have my doubts about Martinez but the idea is that Chris Wood doesn't see the ball much and we limit crosses as much as possible.

You’re talking about constipation right?
Here’s my take:
Bailly prone to brain farts and losing the plot
Lindelof prone to making basic defensive errors more suited to a Sunday league pitch

both gash

Is Chris Wood better than Haaland and Nunez? Both struggled to get the better of Martinez in the CL
He’s worse than those strikers of course but they play for teams that dominate their leagues, they’re not the type to lump it to the big man. It’s probably not going to be Chris Wood but you can bet your bottom dollar the bottom 5 teams in the league will stick a brute on him and punt balls up the field.

Certain this one will happen. I'm now convinced that our summer window will be:

Malacia - £13m
Martinez - £48m
Eriksen - free

Pereira - £13m
Henderson - loan.

Fantastic from a Glazer perspective. At worst they may have to spend an additional £40m on Teilemans. All off set by huge savings in terms of player wages.

No, our CB's are more than capable of providing us with shit.

Yeah, I mean none of them are great, but I am arguing within the context of that. And within that context I find Lindelof to be a better CB for the reasons I highlighted above while also acknowledging that neither are great.

I think Lindelof would great as back-up to Varane and Martinez though.

If we're playing an aggressively high line with our CBs positioned near the half-way line and our opponents decide that rather than try to exploit all the space behind them they'd rather put a big static CF on our CB and lump the ball into the air, I'll be absolutely thrilled.

Good news. Looking forward to it. His playing out from the back and ability on the ball and being left footed will be a big help in our build up. Hopefully more reliable from a fitness perspective than our other CBs.

Be good if he backed up.. right out the door.

Consider what he said about Maguire, you would assume he is starting. Then when you consider that we have chased this guys for this long, he is also coming to start. Varane?

From one unimportant transfer to another.
Stop with the philosophy and system shit, there is no such without MIDFIELD AND ATTACK.

Then the tactics following.
I am really pissed with the business so far - absolute nonsense.

I'm not sure what to think about this one.

Im certain he is too small to play CB. So hopefully he will see more time in midfield unless Varane continues his injury problems.

But then again, ETH thinks he is critical to the style of play he is trying to implement. Also love an aggressive argie fecker. We've had good results with a few of those types.

We are overpaying him by atleast 10-15m. But that's the cost when you are late . Should have spoken to Ajax very early.

I’m assuming he will play midfield in a lot of the tougher games. There’s just no way ETH says that Maguire is captain and drops him, nor will he play Maguire over Varane on the right.

The only other scenario I can see is that we have a buyer for Lindelof.

Sorry Maguire is the last person you want in a one on one. So if he’s captain and in turn a guaranteed starter, not sure how that works.

It will be much easier for Ten Hag to drop Maguire from the starting line up purely on performance, than to come in and immediately strip him of captaincy while still learning squad dynamics. The logical step after that will be that Maguire would lose captaincy if he goes a whole season as backup and no one will bat an eyelid. It is important for Ten Hag to just go about his business as quietly as possible without the drama of stripping an England international of the captain's armband.

I guess time will tell though how true any of our thoughts are.

Can imagine that's Bailly out the door, which is unfortunate, but the lad just can't stay fit. After yesterday's performance, here's hoping that has added on a few million.

As for Martinez, be interesting to see how much game time he gets. You'd imagine it'd be him and Maguire batttling out on the left, with Varane and Lindelof for the right, but I guess time will tell. It was so important that went for a left footed centre back, though. Hopefully we can get this over the line.

we haven't exactly, shone have we? everything is taking an age when it looked fairly simple eg fdj and eriksen - one of whom no one else is after, the other is a free
I’m interested to know what made you think it all looked “fairly simple”? Have you been at the negotiating tables?

When he signs, can we make sure we show him what a well-toasted loaf of bread looks like?

Yesterday summed up Bailly perfectly.

Although his help in the 4th goal was sexy, he also had some brain fart moments which would have resulted in goals against on another day due to unforced errors.

I loved him but we just can’t rely on him to stay fit and to stay mentally stable.

IF Varane stays fit, Maguire is spending the season on the bench. Martinez will be integral to passing out from the back.

I honestly don't care if he is signed or not, our main problem has been in the middle of the park, still we haven't signed anyone in that position to rectify that problem, I do wonder what ETH is thinking spending £45m on this lad, he better be the next Maldini or I'll be the first to be critical of him ignoring our engine room.

You should care because a competent CB who’s press resistant working in tandem with a press resistant midfielder is the backbone of ETH football. Didn’t you see the dolts passing it side to side with no fecking clue what to do with the ball yesterday?
