Lisandro Martinez | Signs for United

Have you got any links to this? If it was a public calling out, there must be articles.

Contrary to your point, Ten Hag has also said:

"At the beginning of the season we were looking for a brain for central midfield," Ten Hag said at the time. "We knew Martinez had played in central midfield, but could he do it in Ajax's system? We tried him there and we saw good things.

It's been posted so many times in this thread. He publicly said that Martinez is not a DM as he doesn't have the pace for it or something along those lines.

If you've read the topic you'd know. He said it on public television, but it's in Dutch, the english version of it has been posted like 50 times already in this topic

So you are saying the other quotes praising him are false? The topic is actually "Lisandro Martinez" unless I cannot read.

The point about being good in 1-on-1s is a fair point. Our CBs were badly exposed by that flaw when we attempted to play a high line.
I don’t think it’s that important a quality really. When do you ever see Stones, Laporte or Dias defending 1v1? If we want to play a high line it’s the coach’s job to ensure our defenders aren’t left isolated.

Yes they are false or outdated. Because after Ten Hag saying that Martinez hasn't got the legs for the midfield on a talkshow, he hasn't played Martinez there anymore.

He has a bit of that shithouse thing about him. Could see him playing that Fabinho/Fernandinho…”foulanyonewhostepsintoyourhalf“ role quite well.

Don't know about him to be honest, but 55M seems really high.

Really hope that he's a potential world class player, because at this price we could have Koulibaly that would have bring instant quality and leadership.

Hope that we will be able to offload Jones/Bailly/Tuanzebe so we will not have 6 players at the same position.
Koulibaly is 31 and is costing a high fee and is signing a five year contract on colossal wages. That is by no means a smart transfer even if he has a good first season. We need to be looking for the next Koulibaly not the 31 year old version.

Moving Jones and Bailly on would clean up our CB options nicely.

Martinez, Maguire, Varane and Lindelof fighting for two places, with Martinez being the left-footed LCB good in 1v1 situations we currently lack. And crucially we'd have at least two CBs who don't have question marks around their fitness.

If we can get Martinez, Eriksen and FDJ for preseason, that would be great. Atleast the first two.

Various reasons actually.

He has played DM and got praise from ETH
Ten Hag has said mid and attack is what they need to focus on
We have 6 CB's at the club.
The same Ten Hag has said he lacks dynamism to play in midfield.
Yes we have six CBs, at least two will probably leave. We have no left footed CB.
The pursuit of Frenkie also doesn't add up with pursuing a sitting DM, which Lisandro would be if he was played there. Ten Hag will play a defensive minded runner with FDJ at the base of midfield. That's not Lisandro Martinez.

Because Ten Hag very publicly stated that he wasn't good enough for the DM spot, at Ajax, so unless Ajax is way better than United, he's not going to play there(unless in emergencies of course).
Some people on here really dont understand that frenkie will be playing infront of the CBs, collecting the ball from them and dictacting play from deep. There is no DM just as chelsea dont have a sitting DM either. Jorginho sits infront of the CBs. Kante will hunt down the ball, as will mcfred. Martinez has a world class left foot. As a CB he is exceptional with cross fieild passes especially out to the right wing from left centre back position.

I think some fans are concerned about his height and are just hoping he'll play DM too.

I don't recall height ever really being a issue when we played Blind at CB. Infact, I remember him pocketing Lukaku.

If Martinez comes he's coming as a starter, interesting to see who's benched out of Maguire/Varane to partner him.

Varane also started on the right yesterday with Lindelof on the left, which signals to me that it might be Varane/Martinez CB partnership...

Bailly is our best one-on-one defender, we should be moving on Lindelof whose fitness isn't even reliable anymore.

I'd rather move on Jones, Tuanzebe, AWB and Telles before trying to shift Bailly. I know he's made of glass but he's a more talented backup than any of those 4.

And stick with Bailly who can't stay fit for more than 2 games in a row?

Lindelof missed six games last season due to injury/illness and three of those were down to coronavirus so hardly a dint on his injury record which I think is a bit overstated on here.

Bailly missed four days last year due to an ankle injury and that must be a record year for him. He missed 20 games and 33 games in the previous two years.

We just need to end the Bailly experiment now. He had potential to be a very good player but unfortunately his body just wouldn't allow it. Also, he doesn't seem very professional undermining previous managers with his instagram antics.

It should be a Varane/Martinez CB partnership with Maguire coming in when one of them needs resting, but the comments the other day from ETH about Maguire remaining captain has me doubting that.

Sorry Maguire is the last person you want in a one on one. So if he’s captain and in turn a guaranteed starter, not sure how that works.

Huh?

As opposed to Baily??

Lindelof is way more reliable both in terms of fitness and ability.

Lindelof was playing with a back issue most of the season.

I prefer moving him as he's the least aggressive defender I've seen for United and I don't see how he would fit Ten Hag's system.

Losing Jones and Bailly would be a no brainer. Bailly still hints he could be a decent player, but signing Martinez and the presence of Maguire and Varane virtually ensures that won't be with us. He needs to go somewhere, actually stay fit and play a decent season of football. You can't have a backup that's never available. We'd need a backup to the backup.

The difficulty will be shifting these guys. I think Bailly would appeal to clubs on the loan market more so than a sale as they'd want to see him show fitness. I don't know who would want to take Jones quite honestly, it's a stretch to imagine.

There’s going to be a game where we play 5ft 7 Malacia next to 5ft 9 Martinez and Chris Wood is going to absolutely maul them.

It's mind boggling how much we've spent on center backs and still haven't found a good partnership. Just hope Martinez can strike up a good partnership with Jones.
