Lisandro Martinez | Signs for United

Yeah I agree, my initial point was just that ETH joined Ajax, made a couple of signings from his former clubs that didn't pan out. It's possible that Martinez, Antony, Malacia, Timber etc. might be those signings for us and they might not come off.

In an ideal world, the club's scouting system will have targets and the signings are not just based off of what the manager says.

I also have no doubt he'll be successful here.
Yes I agree the signings we're making are risky but aren't all signings?
Am sure if we hadn't gone for his signings we would have targeted players like Kalvin Philips, Pau Torres possibly Lewandoski in attack, at least in this scenario we can see the coherent ideas he plans on executing with this players.
Plus aside De Jong I don't see any other signing we're making as a guaranteed starter.
Martinez would have to compete with the likes of Maguire, Varane, and Lindelof which shouldn't be straight forward in my opinion, Malacia with Shaw, Eriksen with Bruno and Antony if we go back for him would compete with Sancho and Rashford for a wing spot, I'm relaxed about I because I feel we have good players already the manager can work with and get up to speed with his ideas.

We really are approaching these transfers differently -- wait for someone to bit and get some sort of base price and then top that up a little and bob's your uncle.

also liking that its 41+4, not 40+5 or 45+5...but 41+4. I just like that level of shithousery

To be honest, I have never seen him play, is he decent and how does he compare to Maguire/Varane/lindelof

Anticipation, aggression, reads the game extremely well and has a great left foot, there isn't much to dislike here.
Only thing that bothers me is our lack of commanding keeper in the box.

So was Varane

Varane def had a few errors in his game that I did not expect. But he was comfortably better than Maguire who was in terrible form.

Also Varane is way better with the ball at his feet. One quick touch and recycles the ball so well with either foot. All Maguire does is spend eons on the ball and then pass it to Shaw under pressure.

It is hard to shake the feeling that just becasue Timber didn't want leave, his partner is going to be good enough, when it was convenient enough theat Timber was going to be good enough for us himself.

But ETH has clearly decided that familiarity is the way to go, and tbf he looks pretty good, it also won't take that much for him to establish himself in the starting 11 given the competition there, so it could work out well.

Just posted a video on him - last page, should provide an insight into strengths and weaknesses.

Martinez was Ajax player of the season last year so was better than Timber last year.

So we’re about €5m away and he prefers us over Arsenal..? I can’t see how this doesn’t get done

Since this might be as objective as we can get, here is a direct comparison between him and CBs (van Dijk, Alaba, Dias) from the semi-finalists in the CL for the 21/22 season. At least statistically, he is very good/excellent in most areas.

Chose Alaba since he is of a similar stature, although he is still taller.

He reminds me a little of Sergio Ramos in the way he controls and plays the ball. Also his size shouldnt be an issue if he has good anticipation. Its pretty rare in a game to have players jumping up for a ball when theyre shoulder to shoulder.

Not to say all the new players aren’t very good, but the recruitment seems very Head Coach driven and based on familiarity. It looks to me that the scouting really needs an overhaul because by next season there won’t be many familiar Eredivisie-based players left.

Varane is not that good with the ball at his feet and he gets rid of the ball quickly because of that.
I was expecting him to be a lot better but we will see what Erik thinks of him and Harry soon enough.

I think for this summer, with a new manager that's been at the club a month, the best way to go is with ETH's instincts just due to time constraints. But next summer like you I would like to hope for a long term plan will be in place.

The good thing for United is that the squad is so lacking in midfield talent and to a lesser degree defensive talent...that almost anyone can improve the team.

TalkSport Sources have been ace recently haven't day? Also 39 mill pounds? That's roughly 45 million Euros. That should about seal it right?

Yes because he's younger and the assumption is he has a higher ceiling.

Ok, I was just more making the point that much as he looks good, it's a bit of a strecth to think that both Ajax CB's from last season are going to be good enough for us.

Depends on whether Arsenal are going to increase their bid. If it is the final offer and the player really wants out, then it should seal it.

This guy will be the most comfortable defender on the ball we have, and that says a lot with Maguire and Varane in the side.

Obviously the height will be a question until we see how he handles crosses, but hopefully with a high line and pressing he won't have to deal with it regularly.

I don't think ETH is given guarantees over a starting role that's why Timber didn't fancy it, he isn't ruling out Maguire, Varane or Lindelof they'll have fight for their place.

€50m. They are taking the p. That latest offer if true should be accepted. I wouldn’t offer higher. They had to come down eventually for Gravenberch.
Why? You expect to sign a class player for cheap? Gravenberch is no comparison, he had a 1 yr deal left. Ajax also barely came down for him. Ajax wanted 25 and got 19 + 5. If he had 3 yrs left (like Martinez) Ajax would be asking 70m for him as well.

Nevertheless, please don't offer higher, Ajax will happily keep him. If you want to get a very good player, on a long term deal that he current club has no intention of selling then you have to pay an exceptional fee. Ajax can keep him and sell him for a decent fee next year. This is Ajax' preferred option. Only way to get him is to offer something special.
