How about we actually sign a proper CDM rather than one that can do a job there?

We have too many areas of the pitch that need addressing to do that this window. I would expect nearly every player we bring in to be able to play multiple positions and paper over cracks we'd otherwise have by the end of this window.
Absolute no reliable links to CDM in a long time. We're just not after one as much as it sounds absurd and ignorant, not making steps to address that position.
McTominay can play both defender and deep midfielder, but he doesn't fit at all with his skillset whatever that is. Martinez would offer something new in that regard.
Maguire needs competition in LCB position. We don’t have any playing there well enough. Maybe, we should consider this guy if the price is reasonable?
Does feel like Erik isn't looking for a pure DM but someone who is flexible enough to play at CB but also step into midfield too
Another Argentine defender we had a few years back was also a bit on the short side but he did quite well, until he said he wanted to join Liverpool.
Why did he do that by the way? They were crap at the time, and he just ruined his reputation. And then didn’t get the move. Seems like the most counterproductive stance to possibly take, which makes me think that there must have been some underlying reasons.

He was a 5ft 10 left back -- not that short for a left-back. Denis Irwin was only 5ft 8 as an LB. Evra was even shorter. Besides, they don't have to deal with the Nunez or Haalands of the world, one on one.

Martinez won 3.3 aerial duels per game last season in the league. In comparison VVD won 3.4 per game. PL hyper physicality and all that bollocks aside, at least it shows that he is no slouch when it comes to winning headers. Teams that play with a lot of possession does not have that much need to win headers anyway, as shown by Dias and Laporte's stats of 1.8 and 1.6 aerial duels won per game. Headers is but a small part of a game. It is called football instead of headball for a reason. It is not as if he is a midget trying to play as a CB, he is more than physical enough to win headers on his own. The most important thing for winning headers is the anticipation and speed to get in position before the attacker, have the strength and aggression to stand his ground when challenged and a good leap, all of which Martinez have an abundance of.
He is also a leader on the pitch and loves commanding the defense, which is something that Varane thrives with. Martinez will direct the play, be more aggressive on the pitch and spray passes around while Varane will stay at the back as cover and mop up all loose balls and win challenges. I can certainly see them work well as our CB duo.
If what you all want is just a PL proven CB to win headers then we should just sign Tarkowski.

Winning headers is just one part of CB job, there is lot more to defense than just winning headers. Yes, his height might be a problem but going by reports he brings lot more to the team, which means his pros should easily outweigh his cons.

The player who won 2nd most aerial duels in PL was Ivan Toney and he is just 1.79 m tall (yes I know he is not a defender).

Power does. We’ve all seen Lindelof get thrown around like a dog toy. Aggression is a big part of it, Keano wasn’t the tallest after all, but if you’re smaller you’re going to struggle against more powerful strikers aren’t you.
Will his height be a problem at all if we end up playing 3 at the back? In this case, I would assume he'll play more as a ball carrier and playmaker from defence while the other two defenders can handle any big forwards or headers.
I don't think we are playing a back 3. That will defeat a big purpose of why we really wanted De Jong

I think £40 million is a reasonable price for a player who can play 3 positions and a Argentina international.

Its cool that we are getting a CB, but RB is a higher priority. Our options there are pathetic tbh.
People seem to assume (on twitter at least) that this potential signing would spell the end of Maguire as a starter.

If Varane's fit Maguire's status of captain cant be enough to keep him out of the team. Only way Maguire plays is if Varane's injured imo. Lindelof obviously becomes 4th choice as well
The reason we have too many areas on the pitch that need addressing is precisely because we keep ignoring them for years on end by either buying players we don't need, or buying players we can use but are being brought in for redundant positions. Secondly, I'd argue that a defensively strong centre midfelder is the biggest priority right alongside an RW and RB.

Eclectic players are more necessary than ever in our current state and budget. Once we can fill the extra positions, they can be singular and hone in on a specialist position on the pitch, but for now, this season in particular, once the games come thick and fast, X filling in for Y or Z in an injury crisis or for rotation will be worth its weight in gold.
I think your second point comes down to how you perceive this player. For me, he'd be coming into midfield, not defence, and working back over time if he is needed, but more particularly when we get more midfielders in.
Last thing we need in defense is an Argentinian hot head short arse CB. We should either buy a proper CDM or CB.
