Lionel Messi

His diet was supposedly bad years ago with fizzy pop and chocolate etc.

Someone at Barcelona had released the team's eating schedule for a pre season tour years ago. Messi had cheese pizza and Sprite in his

I totally agree with you, which is why I said that we can't imagine what the game will be like thousands of years from now. But I really think it will take a really long time for someone to come along like Messi. Eventually it will inevitably happen, but I suspect we'll all be 6 feet under the ground by then.

Don't know, I think that's quite biased to be honest. 10 years before Messi there was Ronaldo Lima who was arguably even more talented. And 10 years before him there was Maradona who I don't need to say anything about. Again, go back a decade and you'll get Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Best and Zico. Especially Zico is highly interesting. I used to think just like you that Messi was absolutely unique in how he was the best dribbler and playmaker around while simultaneously scoring these incredible amounts of goals but Zico in fact was quite similar. Scored over 600 goals for club and country as a number 10 and arguably best dribbler of his era. Also 66 goals in 88 games for Brazil. If you haven't, watch a compilation of his, was like an eye opener to me. And before Zico and co., there were Pele, di Stefano and Puskas who also have incredible goal records on top of being at least outstanding playmakers.

What I want to say with this is that basically every generation has brought up at least one talent that's in the same bracket as Messi and some of them even managed comparable or better goal records while being comparably impactful apart from their goal scoring. And how much haboc Maradona, Best, Ronaldo or Zico would have wreaked in that Pep eleven is up for imagination. Personally I think Neymar would also be a 40+ goals a season player under Pep.

So yeah, right now it looks like there's no young player around that could get even remotely close to Messi but I'm sure the next prodigy is already born. Maybe he'll utilize his talent like Messi did, maybe he won't for whatever reason like R9, Best or Maradona (who in total also had an underwhelming career considering how gifted he was). But sooner or later there one of these prodigies will equal him.

Where did you get that stat for zico. Wiki shows a much smaller figure.

German wikipedia. I also just checked the Portuguese page and it lists the same stats as the German page. Has him at 587 goals in 850 club games and 66 goals in 88 international games.

Didn't check the references though.

weird, in the English version it's 476 club goals in 699 games, and 48 goals in 71 games for Brazil.Still very impressive, needless to say.

It's interesting watching whole matches from the 70's and 80's involving players such as Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Eusebio and seeing how inconsistent they can all be in the course of one game, let alone multiple ones. Stray passes, odd passing choices, poor touches, caught in possession, etc. History paints such a glorious picture of the world's greatest that it's humbling to see inconsistency in all of their respective games.

Yeah, when you think of the greats of all time, you often think they dominated every match, they were in and nothing could be further from the truth. When Ronaldo and Messi fail to score a hattrick every game, they labelled as past it.

Did a small search and it seems there is no reliable data out there. English wiki lists his total club goals as 192. Cannot fathom how can there be such a huge variation on this, given that he is a well known footballer.

Best he has ever been since 2011-2013. Better than 2015. Not as good as 2007-11, but close.

Not sure how Liverpool is confident they can stop HIM.

If Barca play at Anfield like they played at OT, we'll get a few goals I reckon.

(He's the GOAT, though :D)

They're better than you right now. By a big enough margin that they don't necessarily have to stop him, just contain and force the others to beat them. Worked for juventus 2 years ago, and this liverpool side is a better version of that juventus

True. Barca seem to struggle with high pressing and Liverpool are masters of it.

I don't remember Arthur and Lenglet in that game vs. Juventus in 2017, with Lucho still on board. Ehem.

And, let me repeat this once again, 2019 Messi will make history.

We gifted him the goals though. Made it too easy for him

Exactly, dunno why the wank fest. Especially the first goal, he was given the ball then Jones ran the opposite direction showing him onto his favorite foot.. fecking idiot defending if I've ever seen it.

The second.. feck me I'd save that while looking the opposite direction.

Might be. I still reckon barcelona will need Messi to be at his best for both games, AND the rest of the team to also be at their best, to go through. Liverpool are the best team in the world right now. And right now is all that matters

Our team isn't that good and we managed to dominate you in our home game and we've gifted you two goals today. You haven't impressed me at all, I think you will be in for a shock when you played Liverpool./city.

Watch him pull his hamstring just before they play Liverpool. With the way their season are going I'm certain this will happen.

thankfully he took pity on us in second half. the whole Barca did tbf. unplayable in those rare moments he cared enough to dribble, pass or do anything after the game was settled.

Well obviously this Barca is better than our current united, but feck Messi. He's probably the best of all time, but this is the third time in CL he's made us look like amateurs(which this year we certainly are), but feck him anyway. I love him when he's not playing us. He just makes everything look so easy, but DDG gifted him the second goal.

Absolutely phenomenal that time he made Jones look even poorer than he always is. He and Barca are even more dangerous in the CL this time because they can easily afford to rest both him and Suarez before each game now.

Do the same to Liverpool please. Oh and it would be funny if Suarez goals put them out.

He's a wonderful player, best I've ever seen but I do think we let him score far too easily, Young's mistake and then Jones standing off him followed by his second going through our keeper.

Yeah his goals weren't really that impressive, but great players always make it look it easy. But the 2nd goal was flukey. You could see the 1st coming miles away, it's his signature move.

Bread and butter stuff from him tonight. He didn't have to go beyond second gear to put 2 past us

1st goal was world class and will be replayed for a while, the only reason people are calling it unimpressive is because its Messi. Winning the ball and evading an immediate challenge, staying balanced on his feet, nutmeg/feint/accelerate past a tackle, finish from outside the box into the bottom corner.
That's 9/10.
