Lionel Messi

He's won 4 in a row. I'd be shocked if it bothered him. He'll know in his own head that but for injuries he'd have almost certainly made it 5 in a row.

Exactly. Priority number 1 at the moment is to keep Barcelona ticking over with the help of Neymar, and at the same time not forcing himself too much so that he gets and injury which could mean he misses the World Cup this year. Some prizes are bigger than others and the World Cup is bigger than any team prize or individual prize and I think Messi knows this.

Seems to be up shit creek right now as far as injuries go. Interestingly Graham Hunter has been informed that one big factor is the 'disgraceful' way in which he was brought on injured against PSG when they thought they were going out the CL.

There was a few games late last season when he was far from fit.

He should never have played some games.

A bit of the (soap opera enlivened) background to the injuries. Messi in his younger days was prone to muscle strains and injuries, Guardiola seemed to find the magic formula to fix that. He appointed a Barca physio called Juanjo Brau effectively as Messi's personal trainer, a job that included accompanying him on trips with the Argentinian team and other close season stuff.

At some point in the past few months, their relationship has cooled. Depending on who you listen to that's because Messi didn't want to hear his advice, or because he gave the wrong advice (by letting him play the PSG game and then later, for Argentina and in benefit matches during the summer), or because Messi doesn't like the fact his physio is "over familiar" with his wife and kid, and doesn't get on so well with the the rest of his family.

Whatever it is, the physio no longer works with Messi. He's stopped travelling with him. Though he is still a Barca employee, it's thought that he may soon be on his way to join Pep Guardiola again.

Incidentally, Fabregas said to the press last night. "Messi has to stop playing, he needs to look after himself, or in the end, it'll just get worse. It happened to me at Arsenal. He needs time to recover."

Great news for a competitive La Liga.

He has lost a yard of pace I don't want to blame injuries but that is worrying at 26. He has played so much over the last 4-5 years he needs a proper rest,. The team is learning to cope without him, I still think they will need him for the Champions League but in La Liga they will be fine, Neymar will relish the spotlight.

The only real surprise for me is that he managed to stay injury free for so long, given his problems when he was younger. I reckon he may have a position change if his injuries keep up, possibly shifting him further back.

Up to eight weeks... hmm... yep, expect to see him suit up in two weeks.

I think the Ballon D'Or is the least of his concerns MrMarcello. He has won it four times already, but for him, the essential is to be fit and ready for the World Cup campaign. Out of all the top players in the world, he is the only one that needs to win the world cup to essentially cement his place amongst the greatest of all time. Perhaps if it was a couple of years ago, the Ballon D'Or would be important, but this year, I don't think so. He will be there just to make up the numbers.

Are you on a wind up?

Messi's hardly been in sparkling form anyway, and maybe this time they should let him heal properly instead of rushing him back, only to pick up more niggling injuries. It would be a massive shame if he missed out on the world cup because of niggly injuries.

The amount of pressure on his shoulders to win the World Cup next year must be immense.

What the feck are you talking about? My post has nothing to do with awards. FFS, your love of Messi clouds any rational judgment.

You think? That Argentina team doesn't have the balance imo, I am just looking for him to set a tournament on fire. He doesn't necessarily need to win on but he needs to be the best player at a World Cup.

Surely if anything, this (his current situation) would serve as dampener on his expectations to a degree?

I meant a team that has a realistic chance of winning the World Cup. For me, Argentina have a better chance of winning the World Cup than either France, Sweden or even Portugal.

Still a bit short citied for me, but I weren't argue with you about Messi or the world's best, I hear you have form

I saw the word "suit", so perhaps you need to articulate yourself better next time. There are very few footballers, if any that play football in suits...

All I am saying jaffy, is that as far as attacking options are concerned, they are a formidable side, but what lets them down for me has to be the goalkeeper and the back four, totally shocking at times. As for being the best player, that is going to be difficult since as we know, there will not be la liga defenders playing against him but some of the worlds best (I am talking about the knockout rounds, and not the group stages.) It is going to be extremely difficult for him, but we know that he can do it, it just needs him to step up to the plate.

Suit up... allow me to educate you for a second...for example, I would get suited up to play in the five-a-side league in my local town, or when I was in high school I would suit up to play any sport. It's not limited to a business/fashion suit.

Phrasal Verb:
suit up
To put on clothing designed for a special activity: suits up in shorts for a jog.

I do have form, but there again, so have others. Although I am not as short-sighted as some people think.

Well I suppose my initial question would be why is it that

Out of all the top players in the world, he is the only one that needs to win the world cup to essentially cement his place amongst the greatest of all time

You think out of ALL the top players, he needs to do something extra to prove his worth? which would insinuate the other's don't.

You then went on to clarify by this saying that you actually meant out of the actual teams who have a chance of winning it.

Firstly, Portugal and Argentina I don't think are much different in terms of expectation, so not sure why you are disregarding Ronnie in this one as Portugal are as good as Argentina on the day.

Also, I don't understand why winning the Ballon D'Or once has any relation to him being less 'bothered' in this regard now..

Who was talking about Ronaldo??? I was talking about Postiga who has had a brilliant world cup qualifying campaign scoring 6 goals.

Your initial statement was
Out of all the top players in the world, he is the only one that needs to win the world cup to essentially cement his place amongst the greatest of all time
Hence, why I mentioned Ronnie, another top player who hasn't won the world cup? Also I'm not sure why you have now mentioned Postiga? He has nothing to do with anything. Go back and read our last 2 posts to each other, I think you may be having a few conversations at once mate.

Guess this would be the best time for Ronnie to take centre stage and finally push for some more world class performances. The remaining two CL games and the two legs against Sweden could help his cause greatly in this case.

Messi will recover, they will just inject him with that completely legal stuff they inject in all the other Spanish Sportsmen, completely fine.

What is the point? You saw me mentioning "top players", and you thought I was speaking about Ronaldo. Fine. If you cannot give credit where it is due, then there is no point. Postiga really was the best player for Portugal in the tournament, but I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

Postiga brilliant LMAO Postiga has never been brilliant in his career, stop going by stats and start watching games.
