Just look at the number of fans urging us to sell everyone and buy Messi or wouldn't mind if he offer him 1m per week because "he's worth it". Fan ownership opens a board to pressures you wouldn't see in any other ownership structure. The thing is you can't even bank on there being financial controls unless it is imposed by an external entity, such as the league. With the exception of this last election, virtually every presidential campaign headlines are about the players any candidate will bring. It feeds into an unsustainable culture. Even this last election, all the candidates were promising to re-sign Messi no matter what.

50m a year is already a huge payout for Messi, around half of what he used to earn at Barca. Remember, he had a 4 year contract with Barcelona which cost 550m, which is around 135m per year. To own Messi, you either have to literally break the bank or borrow from oil field.

Add Messi's salary and that means Barcelona have been in negative for years.
I have no doubts PSG will pull this off. Even with FFP considerations. One of the gambits of ESL fiasco was Nassar Al-Khelafi becoming the chairman of the ECA (European Club Association) and siding with UEFA of the ESL coup. Plus QATAR are hosting the world cup in a year and the jewel in the crown of world football playing for thier club PSG will only strengthen their white washing ambitions.

Perhaps for different reasons but neither Shell or John Lewis would spend so much of their revenue on staffing costs. The one thing they'd all agree on its its the opposite of ethical to run a business in a way that endangers its viability.

I read that the reduction in wages was nothing more than an accounting trick in that they would be paying him for two years after he'd left the club after two seasons to go to America. There was no actual wage reduction.

Can't agree. If he'd left when he was 30 of his own volition he would have gotten credit for taking on a new challenge. Now he's leaving to get more money. 34 years old is not the time to seek the first new challenge of your career when your boyhood club is going down the drain.
I cannot believe that Barca will weather the next few years without Messi than with him, for two reasons:
- Surely a chunk of Barca's commercial revenue will be tied to Messi, they'll be losing that
- Having an old, experienced head during transitions must surely be a good thing. Would we ever think that having players like Scholes, Neville, Solksjaer, Rio etc. around the squad would have been a bad thing?

He would never go back to Argentina or the MLS. He has no affinity for the Argie clubs nor will the MLS honour the type of contract he seeks. It will be Europe.

If he wanted to stay at Barca the club he loves, he could have signed for minimum wages.
Likewise, if he loved playing football, he could happily reduce his wages to say £200k to £350k a week for example.
But instead, he will be demanding £500k plus a week wages and a huge signing fee on top.
