Lionel Messi | PSG Watch

Yeah, I have the same feeling with Zlatan sometimes. People idolize bully behaviour and I don't like that. In case of Maradona, I believe it has more to do with him being a relatable person to many. A role model athlete that's quiet, controlled and professional all the time doesn't really inspire identification because fans don't see themselves in him. Maradona had extremely bright but also very dark sides to him, like most people have (albeit not as extreme).
Zlatan has mostly been on a WUM though in his entire career. The guy is a jester. Who has he ever bullied ?

I think it works both ways. Maradona lit up like a flame and his shades of gray are appealing to many. At the same time from what I understand he didn't always channel his talent and energies in the right areas and his bust ups, drug issues, cheating to win the WC etc are not exactly signs of greatness either. While many from the current generation focus only on goals and assists, many from the prior ones also seem to see the best of him as the always him which obviously wasn't the case. Consistency, ethic etc are also important and from what I gather Pele was better in that regard.

Zlatan has a considerable amount of self-awareness, though. He's a piss taker to a considerable extent. He enjoys playing a role when dealing with the media.

I'm not saying he's actually a super humble guy - but he's clearly not deadly serious about being some kind of über alpha killing machine who refers to himself in the third person.

Maradona had personality and character in spades - good and bad.

Messi generally comes across as...not very charming. Boring as feck.

Ronaldo...yeah, what can you say. I used to say that he at least - when compared to Messi - came across as a bit crazy (not in a good way, but still). But on the whole what he comes across as is a very unpleasant person on all sorts of levels.

Yeah, I like Zlatan's media personality but he also can be an asshole to team mates and opponents and that's not part of the role he plays, that's him and he gets glorified for it sometimes as well because it fits to the public perception of him. Let's not forget he intentionally injured a team mate to get his move away from Ajax. Or the countless times he bullied opponents because he's bigger, grabbing them by the neck, hitting them because they dared stepping on his foot, throwing Gattuso in a trash bin in a fight, etc. That's how bullies behave.

I recently read an article that compared Maradona to Pelé and why the former has more worshippers than the latter. Pelé hovered above all things - extremely professional, well mannered, etc. Kind of like Superman is an old fashioned and less relatable hero because he has no real weaknesses and people don't see themselves in him, he rather shows them what they're not. While Maradona had flaws (and plenty of it) but still made it, giving them hope for themselves. So in the end, Maradona was liked more despite he had many character traits that aren't likeable at all.

With Messi it's a bit similar I think. If he wasn't idolized but just your office pal, you probably would like his humble ways (at least in terms of social behaviour) more than somebody with a more toxic personality like Zlatan for example. I for instance would hate to work with somebody like that who tries to impose his alpha male fuss on me. That's not the kind of people I surround myself with.

I'd say that Messi comes across (much) more as "boring" or "bland" rather than "humble". There's plenty of stories going around that portray him as anything but "humble".

Bland but still somewhat unpleasant personality. The sort of person you can't find an obvious, tangible fault with - but you'd still rather not have a beer with the guy because he seems utterly boring (and you actually suspect he's a sociopath).

Ronaldo, by comparison, would be the sort of person you'd run away from straight away because he's obviously an asshole.

Ajax.. How long ago was that ? I'd say he changed a lot since then

Zlatan is harmless, whenever I've seen his team mates talk about him it's normally positive.

This thread is all about personalities now ! :D

Next: Who's the better father - Messi or Ronaldo?

Still...it would be interesting to see a poll: Who would you rather have pint with? Messi or Ronaldo?

My answer would be Ronaldo. Easily so.

He strikes me as a more interesting character for a number of reasons.

That said, he'd probably refuse to have an actual pint (he might agree to drink a pint of water) in the first place, so there's that.

I would go with Messi because I can't stand people who monopolize the conversation and you know it's going to be all about him, his accomplishments and the people that screwed him over (like that Fr Ted speech).

Though I think it would be hard to get a word out of Messi he's more of an enigma.

Id rather Ronaldo as a pundit though.

Well, all his dark sides are also a consequence of being Maradona. You can't really blame him, only Diego knows how it feels like being him. He was a prisoner of himself.

Have you seen Messi and Aguero on stream? I'm pretty sure Messi is a very funny guy, you can tell he loves joking around and he must talk about everything. Thing is he doesn't expose himself in public because he knows that everything he says gets magnified. In private he must be very different.

Messi obviously the quiet people are always the best drunks:lol:

Of course but I don't think he would be that comfortable around me

I think you have to be around him for a long time for him to be comfortable around you.

Ive always been of the opinion that he was the more naturally talented player but Ronaldo was the player you'd want in your team when the chips were down. Ronaldo had a better international career too which swayed it for me. Perhaps it's recency bias, but I think Messi is destined to win the world cup now and that I think settles the debate once and for all.

Haven’t always been his biggest fan but it would be quite the story if he led them to a WC trophy as his last hurrah. They’ve certainly had some luck but he’s been very good and looks about as determined as I’ve seen him.

If he's actually injured he won't make it.

He's holding his hamstring for a lot of the first half.

Argentine commentators have been mentioning it since the 10th/15th minute.

If he did his hamstring that badly, I don't think he would have made it past the half.

He should be fine.

I'd actually take him off just as precaution in the mid second half if the score remains the same. Just too important.

I can only assume he's refusing to come off for fear of them getting knocked out without him on the pitch.

yep. 5 with Mbappe

That's the worry. I just hope he's fit enough for the final.

I'd actually like if he got the opportunity to rest a little and get applauded off but it probably won't happen.

Definitely not injured
