Lionel Messi - Performances

Yep, totally agree. I was just pointing out Xavi at his best cos he's currently at that level of passing, he just doesn't use it for the same finality. But I'm pretty sure he'll transform into that type of midfielder over the coming years.

That would also mean a lot of defensive work not sure about that.

Wasn't a great performance but still ended up with a hattrick and an assist, odd. He was much better in the second half than he was in the first, though.

a hat-trick and an assist, there's been a few games this season where he's played well above what he did today and not had either of those.

another day, another hattrick, another record, another assist, another penalty missed

Technically no, since it was retaken :)

The majority actually, he was average today - only after the sending off and penalty did he actually get involved and play well today (so basically 30-35 minutes).

The whole team was. Rayo should have been out of the game in the first 15 minutes, if Suarez was a bit sharper in some of the plays.

bold it to the end, the point was more there's been several games where he hasn't scored or assisted and played far better.

One of his worst halfs ever followed by a hattrick and an assist in the second.:wenger:

I got your point, and I agree except that it wasn't a "few" or "several" games where he scored/assisted less but still played better, but most of them.

Already scored as many goals so far this season as in the whole of last... already had more assists.

2013/14: 46 apps, 41 goals, 14 assists
2014/15: 38 apps, 41 goals, 20 assists

This actually puts into perspective how absurdly effective he was in 2011/12, in that he would still need to score 32 goals (and 9 assists) to equal his totals of that season

How does he compare to the same stage in his record breaking season, if you have the stats handy? I read last week that at this point of his record breaking calendar year he had the same amount of goals as he has in 2015...

I'll have a quick look. Will edit it into this post.

edit:

2011/12 all comps total: 60 apps, 73 goals, 29 assists
on 08.03.2012: 42 apps, 48 goals, 21 assists

2014/15
on 08.03.2015: 38 apps, 41 goals, 20 assists

So not a huge difference really (especially considering that date in 2012 was a day after he'd just scored 5 v Bayer Leverkusen). Don't really see him getting close to 70 again though.

Calendar year (2012 v 2015) is probably correct as for same amount of goals, but it's so early in the year that it's not at all representative yet, IMO.

Hope he wins Barca the treble, think its well possible.
:nono: Do not want a team with more trebles than United!

Anyway, a lot can happen between now and June, such as RM finding their form again for the CL run in.

Cheers for that. Yeah, true, just over two months into the year is too early to start expecting him to match his annual record. Just like I thought everyone was going overboard when they said Cristiano would break records after his fast goalscoring start this season.

Even last season's numbers are ridiculous when you think and it was considered his worst season in a while. There is being a legend and there is Messi. All these records will never be beaten by anyone in our lifetime.

Another day, another brace....

But that one run of his, even though it came to nought, was enough to make my night.

Yeah the one where he beat three or four defenders. The guy is a genius.

I hope he scores a hat trick against City with the same type of performance at the Etihad in terms of creativity. It would be too much to ask from any player but he can do it.

Neymar, screwed the pooch with that - Leo left him a perfect situation to at least get a decent shot off but nada. Fantastic run though. He had his way against Eibar earlier in the season too and today he was dribbling defenders with confidence
