Liam Delap | £30m release clause?

Delap is wanted by United, Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea
Yes but Keane was clearly one of the better players in the league at Forrest over multiple seaaons. Delap as a talent vs Keane at the time is night and day.

People just love to complain. Cafe posters are not the best judges of talent. Remember that lots of people did not want Carrick when we were linked back then.
Recall not very fondly reading through numerous posts about Sancho having world class statistics, prior to him arriving. Seems a lot of people were wrong about his potential :smirk:

My point is that there are other big clubs in for Delap not just United. He’s obviously got something about him

Yes I think he has something about him. I don’t think any other big club is looking at him to lead the line for them as the no1 CF

There’s no issue with the top clubs wanting him; using him as their main striker leading the line is the question.

Someone mentioned Keane, the most coveted midfielder that summer who had Blackburn and Dalglish fuming when they were gazzumped by us for his signature, which was a British transfer record. In 2025 equivalence, that’s Liverpool and whoever people think is the 2nd team (City? Arsenal?) fighting it out to sign him and then paying the new transfer fee record, which means over £115m. Roy Keane was also seen as the successor to our best midfielder since Charlton, in other words eyed for the top gig from the outset.

By contrast Delap is a £30m signing who will likely be used in rotation wherever he goes if it’s a CL club. Nothing wrong with that, but a totally different ballpark and regard.

Yeah IF in a strange parallel universe Hojlund was banging in the goals but Utd saw an opportunity for a reasonable price then I could understand it

I struggle to understand this one after the disastrous Hojlund experiment. Surely by now we have to understand that if there is a single position you can’t be fooling around with it’s the striker one. We can’t be having a kid there, it’s suicidal. This is by far the biggest reason we are 14th, inability to score goals regularly. We can even hide momentarily how poor Onana is and give us time to replace him summer 2026 without wasting our budget for the coming window.

Give Osimhen good wages like Bruno, no way a Nigerian player will reject the opportunity to play for us, they are crazy about United. The market for a striker is the worst of all time, scoring goals has been an issue for years now, this is a necessity if we want to go back to the top asap.

Yeah you are absolutely bang on the money

Mild interest from Chelsea, thats about it, and they want him as backup. He is nowhere near the level of their first striker.

You think he’s ’nowhere near the level’ of Jackson?
Jackson seems to be severely underrated around here. I remember last season people laughed at him being clearly better than Hojlund

He’s nowhere near the level of Jackson? (10 PL goals in a better team they creates more chances)

Hmmmm

It's a different style of football. He will not be running in acres of spaces. He will have to adjust his game and Jackson is better than him with the ball under his feet. Jackson also is a better passer so the whole system works better. I am not saying Jackson is Lewandowski, I am saying he is better than Delap.

I agree that he’s better technically. The jury is out whether he’s a better goalscorer

I agree, we need a quality striker and not just that. We should stop buying wannabe hope-to-be players.

Shick wouldn't come here to be backup striker to an Osimhen/Gyokeres let alone this guy
Shick would be told to fight for its spot and to earn it for a club like MANUT, noone should be guaranteed starter and he he fancies mid bundesleague or primera team, then he can go there, he will not lead a line in a top club ANYWHERE

We're deluding ourselves if we think Delap could / should be prioritised aa our starting striker. Which is why I'm glad that there are so many reservations about signing him.

Yes, it's difficult marketplace for us at the moment but we have to do better.

Yeah major reservations, makes me think that INEOS haven't a clue when recruiting strikers
