Levi Colwill | The next Rio Ferdinand?

Only way to see is to see what happens right. You have simplified Mount's situation somewhat there but it's a bit of this and a bit of that really.

I hope he has made the right decision because he's from my hometown, I know a little about where he's coming from and he's very talented, which is good for England.

He had a agreed a new deal pre World Cup so he wanted to stay and was happy at the club. It really was as simple as that. United took advantage of the contractual standoff. But yeah, you’re right, only way is to see is what happens. I’m chuffed to bits we’ve got him tied down.

I think any player will have to take those challenges and fight for their places. We gave enough opportunities to kids from academy. Its upto them to make their place their own similar to player came for big money.

Mount played most games over pulisic not just because he is academy graduate but he gave consistent performances over pulisic the big money arrival.

Either academy kid or big money arrival have to perform consistently. If colwill gave performances consistently he will play. As simple as that.

Colwill deserved the higher wages as he proved he can be a good player. Hope he will make his spot his own through performances like any other player.

That makes it an even worse decision in my opinion. I get the wage increase will help, but from a footballing perspective what was the rush?

See if he follows the path of basically every Chelsea youth product or see if the new £45m back up option plays ahead of him or any of the other expensive defenders Chelsea have signed recently play ahead of him as well?

Now if things go the way they usually do for a Chelsea youth product, he's stuck on a long contract for a considerable wage, which tbf other clubs would match, it just gives them something to think about rather than it being a no brainer.
You act like we somehow did wrong by these youth products. The likes of CHO, RLC, Chalobah, Reece James, Andreas Christensen etc have been given dozens and dozens or more appearances for Chelsea over the years. Some have worked out fantastically and others have eventually not. I don’t know why you’re acting as if we treat our youth products like dirt and throw them away like garbage. Either you’re good enough or you’re not.

Also, Disasi will play on the right side whilst Colwill is strictly a left sided, left footed CB. So those two won’t compete.

Liverpool fans are so entitled, they wanted our player so they presumed he would just go to them, with 3 years on his contract as well.
Thet also thought 40 million would be enough. idiots

The mistake I said he's made is signing a 6 year contract. Statistically it's more likely it doesn't work out for him at Chelsea and he's made it more difficult to get a move if/when that happens. Same issue I and a lot of others have with these 8 year contracts for Enzo and Mudryk. I don't think they make sense for the player.

It's not, Mount became the player he is due to the platform Lampard and Tuchel gave him, playing and coming through at Chelsea made him what he is.

This narrative we're bad for youth is about a decade out of date but even if it wasn't we have just appointed the best top level coach when it comes to youth development so that point would be void for aslong as he was here anyway.
£45m back up option plays ahead of him
He plays the other side CB, he impacts on Colwills chances about as much as Nkunku does.
All gone or you want gone.
As I've alluded to, just because players don't spend their entire career at the club doesn't mean they weren't brought through and developed, would you class Beckham or P.Neville as not brought through and developed at United because they didn't retire with you?

Hudson Odoi for example spent four and a half years as a first team Chelsea player, won an FA Cup and three continental titles playing a key part in two of them, that's breaking through no matter what way it's spun.

If it doesn't work out for him over the next 2-3 years I doubt the club would even want to stand in his way if he wanted to go somewhere else.

He's an academy graduate so unlike with Enzo, Mudryk etc. there's not going to be any "remaining book value" hanging over his head to dictate just how much money we would need to get for him as a transfer fee in order to not make a big loss, so if things don't work out for Levi it's going to be so much easier to facilitate a move.

I don't really recall us ever holding players 'hostage' if they want to move on, as long as a fair value deal was reached. The only case I can think of is Hazard where we got him to delay the move by a year, which he was happy to agree to. The more common scenario would be the club wanting to move on players who haven't worked out for us, and the players themselves being reluctant to agree to the transfers because they wouldn't get as much money.

Well we'll see won't we boys. Still don't think it wise for anyone signing on for large part of their career at Chelsea at the moment, not until this Boehly regime starts to look like it'll work.

imagine the football fairy godmother waves her magic wand and gives your team any current chelsea CB of your choice.

which one do you pick?

the answer is clearly Colwill,

It's not as simple as that though.

Young players make mistakes and are generally erratic with their overall performances, thus require sufficient game time to develop greater consistency.

Unless that young player is an absolute star in the young Varane mould (or there's an obvious place for them in the team due to a transfer embargo - see Mount/James), then it's incredibly difficult for them to get this required game time at an elite team like Chelsea, due to the stakes and competition for places being so high.

It's unfortunate for Loftus cheek and Hudson odoi both were on the team even before transfer embargo happened. They were given opportunity and already started important games and shone well. But bad injuries stopped them to become superstars for us.

Youngsters will get opportunities and you simply can't downgrade team to just give them chances alone.

Colwill will get his chance and if he perform well why we need to sell him or he will want to move away.

Last season he didn't get chance at Brighton either when season started. He got his chance regularly only when one of their main defenders got injured.

If he stayed with us for same bench role he would have started more games for us than he did for Brighton with injuries we had could have cemented his place into our starting 11. Bit of luck also needed when integrate young players in starting 11.

Genuinely can't believe how carried away people are getting over a kid that has played 17 Premier League games for Brighton!

What do we think? A bit much or respectful?

His Contract renewal announcement imminent. Brighton will add 40 mn more to caicedo valuation. . Good luck to our negotiation team.

For all the massive mistakes Boehly made during his short term as sporting director, insisting on a loan instead of to sell this guy has saved us another potential/likely KDB/Salah situation.

To be fair, he keeps getting isolated vs Salah. Most CB's would struggle with that.

Does show a lot of quality in his dribbling and passing.

A full year as the CB for Chelsea will be an amazing experience for the 20 year old.
