Leighton Baines

He is slow from a standing point, not much in the way of acceleration. Not too shabby when he gets going, but nowhere near Evra though.

Fair enough, you obviously still think a shite Evra who was awful for most games is better than O'Shea.

And you think despite his shiteness he's a better skipper than say Rooney? And yet SAF gave zero chances to Fabio and didn't bring anyone in this January. Bizarre considering he had a player who was awful in most matches.

Hyperbole Ekeke, that's all it is. Evra was fine in most matches and had a handful of bad ones.

The only reason hes captain is because he plays every game. Why not Rooney? Why Rooney I say. No point. Just more unnecessary pressure on him. Vidic is our captain. Rio is our off the pitch captain. Evans might be a good future captain or 2 nd captain. The captaincy dont matter as much anymore in terlms of leadership. Its often the best player thats the captain. Not the best leader. You can lead without the band around your arm. It just means youll have to do the talking with the ref when your team mates do no-nos and you get to hold the trophy first.

The Mirror are reporting that Everton are in talks with Manchester United in a deal for Leighton Baines.

The left back is waiting to join up with the England training camp before heading to Poland but is unlikely to know of any agreement before going.

United have apparently started the bidding at £12m but Bill Kenwright is said to be holding out for much more.

Baines is an excellent player and is certainly good enough to play for us.

I hope we get him.
Agreed

2nd best left back in the league imho, solid defensively and good going forward, he balances it out well. What he certainly has over Evra is his final ball.

Everton is not his level. He is capable of playing for bigger teams. He scores more goals and assists more goals than some of the freaking midfielders on his team. Aren't we loaning out Fabio to Benfica? We have don't a proper left back in our books for backup. I would rather have Baines playing as my left back than use Fryers (if it comes to that).

Tbh I would even have Baines over Evra. the way Evra has been defending recently.

And when I say Everton is his level means he is outside the top 4.Doesn't mean he is shit.

But my point was Baines is a decent left back but also 28 years old and being English, pretty well known, would cost a lot.

Everton got him for 7 mil so would they sell him for less or equal to that?

Wouldn't mind signing him but other areas need to be looked after more.

He is definitely good enough to be here. I've watched a lot of Everton over the past 3 years and his link up play going forward and final ball is up there with the best for a left back. He is fine defensively. No worse than Evra and he will definitely be contending for a first team spot if he comes.

After hearing about the Alaba-link, this just doesn't do it for me anymore. I mean he's got nice hair and all, but it would feel like doing the local tramp after flirting with Kylie Minogue.

Lescott is probably the player City are going to upgrade.

Maybe so - but he had a good season at the heart of one of (if not the) best defence in the league.

Baines is a good player, and for a decent sum I'd have him. Be interesting to see how much better he is in a better side.

Okay, now we just need Tim Cahill too, and we'll have a good combination. Converted about 80% of those Baines crosses on that vid

Just don't see the point of this.. I would rather we take a bit of a gamble on a cheaper more unknown player who would be happy to play 2nd fiddle to Evra/Fabio over the years.. Unless ofcourse the point of Fabio's loan is to eventually sell him which I don't think is possible as he was played in last seasons CL Final and was clearly the 1st choice RB last season (and he has stated he is more comfortable at LB).. I mean 10/11 of course..

Don't get me wrong.. I think Bale is a quality player.. But we have Evra in the short term and Fabio in the long term as 1st choice.. What we don't have is a bench option if Fabio goes out on loan for the entire season to gain some much needed experience and the luxury of REGULAR minutes on the field.. Something he is struggling to get at United as the understudy of Evra..

We have to sell one player for a fair amount each season to keep going so I wouldn't be surprised if a move for Baines or Fellaini happened this summer. The interest in Richardson suggests there has been an enquiry into Baines and we have made one ourselves just to cover our backs a bit. Don't think Richardson is good enough so you could see a Lescott situation, where we held out for as high as possible. (makes me wonder why we don't put more min clauses in our contracts).

If we do end up going for him I hope it's not for too much as other areas of the team are needing strengthened.

Tim Cahill is a poor man's Wayne Rooney, I'd love to see him back in the box finishing more headers. It's a shame Wayne doesn't have a twin brother named Fabio.

Tim Cahill is a better header of the ball than Wayne Rooney..

This is true, but they've not been quoted as looking at any left backs (yet) - I'd much sooner have Baines than Kolarov/Clichy if we're comparing players...

£12m is a great price for a proven, quality left back.

Which Baines barely is. If he were Brazilian or simply foreign people would be singling him out for his defensive errors but being English he's just assumed to be better defensively than Fabio and Rafael.

Would be pleased with this signing. Does that rule out Cylne?

Clyne plays mostly on the right. We have Rafael there with Jones and Smalling acting as a cover so we absolutely do not need him but Baines wouldn't affect his signing.

Clyne, Baines and the third player (likely to be Kagawa) it could be then.

I don't think that's fair. He's probably the next best left back in the PL after Cole.

I wouldn't mind signing him but in the context of our other options and their ages I can't see how it makes sense. Baines/Evra are both too good/old to be backups so it'll be an odd situation, then when Fabio comes back then what?

Is he really better than Evra defensively? Because, going forward, i'd rather have Evra even though Baines definitely has the better cross.

You can, but only with the type of players who want to take responsibility for that, something i felt we lacked last year without Vidic for so long.

Exactly, and yet he plays every game despite being "awful" in most (according to some clueless folk)

I don't get what this has to do with anything. Why Evra I say. No point. Just more unnecessary pressure on an "awful player". Vidic is our captain. Rio is our off the pitch captain.

etc etc etc. ramble, ramble, blah blah.

I don't get your point at all to be honest and have no idea why you quoted me. My point was, why does SAF play Evra if he's awful in most games, and even more strangely, why does he make an "awful" player captain. If we need a player that plays every game, it could be Rooney.
Now, I didn't say it should be Rooney did I? Personally I'm happy with Evra because he's a great personality and he still a very good player, he had some bad games this season, but all in all he was nowhere near as bad as some of the hyperbole nonsense on here.

I think he defends in a very similar style to Evra. Not a fan of his personally. Not sure he's the one for us....

Well if he's no better than Evra defensively, i see no reason in going for him personally. Also think it'l lead to excessive rotation in the LB slot which wont do our defence much good. Would have much rather kept fabio and groomed him.

 what do you expect to get him for??

Well, this guy thought 7-8M.

If I remember correctly everything I have read until now speaks about a transfer in that region (I could be wrong but I don't think that I am). Anything above 7-8M for him wouldn't be good, but for that price seems reasonable to buy him.

"Not a chance", was my reply.

Considering the players we are after.. I expect a more free flowing footballing United next season so maybe Baines's ability to cross the ball from the flank will be a good alternative tool with all the ball players.

Why can't we for once spend the money on a player or two which we actually need? But instead we are apparently sending Evra's backup to Portugal on loan and then spending 12m on another backup
