Leighton Baines

Everton is his level.

Can't see how we actually need him.

Better sign a young one cause Baines would cost a lot too.

15 mil pounds at least?

Not for 2 years week in week out no, and not as skipper.

Ah playing silly beggars now, if you re-read my post I just mentioned that the man makes errors.

He clearly kept Keane in the team too long, so much so we had to build the team around him (extra midfielder to do his running) and we didnt do very well. There's a mistake with an experienced captain.

It's a good point Ekeke but Keane wasn't "awful in most games."

Reports are suggesting that we can get him for about half of that sum. For 15M it would have been ridiculous.

Usually I'm in favour of us bringing in good players, but I don't see the point of bringing in Leighton Baines. While we do need a left back to replace Evra in the future, the left back we should be targeting is someone young, who has time on their side and not someone who is 27. That is even if we should be looking at a left back at all, considering the few times we have seen Fabio, he's been decent and could get better with experience.

If Evra gets injured, we could always play Jonny Evans at left back.

Finally a decent post in this thread.

For a game or two, yes. But if Evra will be injured for several months than we could have a problem. Evans is not good offensively and also we could need him in CB.

£7.5m for Baines?

Can't see that.

If I remember correctly everything I have read until now speaks about a transfer in that region (I could be wrong but I don't think that I am). Anything above 7-8M for him wouldn't be good, but for that price seems reasonable to buy him. As I said before I see him as a transition player, not as a long time replacement for Evra. If we are looking for a long time replacement then that player is Alba who unfortunately cost 20M+.

I'd be amazed if Everton would let him go at that price. Can't see it personally.

Knowing us, we'll spend £20 million on Baines. Then not sign a midfielder, sighting no 'value' in the market as the reason.

Was Everton Lescott's level?

Baines has the ability to cut it at a Champions League club

I don't think Baines is a good one-on-one defender, I reckon he'll get skinned as much as Evra does and he probably isn't as fast as Paddy either. To be honest I hope we're looking for someone else as the next LB. That said, i might be underrating him.

Lescott is probably the player City are going to upgrade.

He actually does make a fair point though. For someone who looked like he was no better than Everton, he's done a very good job at Man City this season.

3rd best defence in the league. 2nd best defence in the league at home.

Baines has done well on the defensive front this year for a full back who bombing up the wing on a regular basis. Yes, he will be exposed but i think his attacking threat makes up for it.

Compare his success rate to Heitinga who starts for Holland at the back and who has had his best season for us and you have similar stats.

Plus him and Pienaar have a devastating combo, imagine what he'd be able to do with Nani/Young.

We clearly need another left back, but this seems a bit of a wierd option. City may spend that sort of money on a player that age just do they have two good players for each position but we can't create that depth through signings like that.

Everton is not his level. He is capable of playing for bigger teams. He scores more goals and assists more goals than some of the freaking midfielders on his team. Aren't we loaning out Fabio to Benfica? We have don't a proper left back in our books for backup. I would rather have Baines playing as my left back than use Fryers (if it comes to that).

The Mirror are reporting that Everton are in talks with Manchester United in a deal for Leighton Baines.

The left back is waiting to join up with the England training camp before heading to Poland but is unlikely to know of any agreement before going.

United have apparently started the bidding at £12m but Bill Kenwright is said to be holding out for much more.

Baines is an excellent player and is certainly good enough to play for us.

I hope we get him.

As much as I've criticised Evra I would not like Baines here instead. I'd like him as a backup but that's not a reason you buy Baines.

Well, @MiguelDelaney (Irish Enquirer) is adamant that Fergie really rates Baines, and tried to get him in January. If that's the case, you've got to trust Fergie, but I'm not sure he's that great a left-back, as good as his left-foot is. Even forgetting the cost for a minute, I'd like us to test out Fabio's credentials rather than block his path with someone who isn't one of the best in the world in the position.

I wouldnt be surprised if its coming from Everton.. generating interest in their player and inviting bids.

Baines is obviously much better than some in here are giving him credit for. Let's also not forget that he can take a mean freekick too. Something we desperately need.

He's not "obviously" much better, what makes you say that? He plays in an Everton team that is set up not to concede goals and still manages to get exposed quite often.

Baines is a good player IMO and if we were selling Evra I'd be happy with him as the replacement, but £12M+ for a back up/rotation option? Seems excessive.

Want. Want. Want.

Fantastic player, him and Ashley Cole have been the two best LB's in the league for 2 years now (hell, England has to get one position with all of the best eh?), also he has luscious hair and a fantastic music blog. Where's the downside?

Would he actually get games though, even if we do get him? SAF doesn't seem to want to rest evra, pretty much ever. Wouldnt even give Fabio a chance, so I think Baines would only be back up to evra next season if he did come.
