Television Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

I like this. Been watching it on YouTube. How long are his episodes?

I've warmed to it a lot after not really 'getting it' at first. I still don't find the metaphors funny though, which is what always put me off, especially when he shouts at the camera. But I don't watch Brooker's Screenwipe for the metaphors either, though some of his hit harder notes I find.

I don't really find it hilarious or anything, just a good, interesting watch that has some laughs throughout. I'm not a fan of the shouting stuff either in truth, I much prefer subtle, dry humour.

Such an excellent show this week, when he started telling us about his correspondence with the televangelist and then the reveal about him establishing his church (it's real), I was giddy with excitement.

I have a feeling Noah is going to be a stop gap between Stewart and when Oliver's contract at HBO is up. He is quite literally the perfect Jon Stewart replacement.

As much as I mock extremist christians I do feel like they're an easy target. I'm still waiting on a mainstream comedian or liberal to attack areas of islam for a change.

And why does it have to be comedians specifically? Sam Harris does, Dawkings does, there's probably thousands of people within the Muslim community who we're too ignorant to know about who do it. So, why demand it of people who go and stage about talk about their dick for 20 straight minutes?

I just think radical islam is more alarming than Christianity which is dying out in most first world countries, and if people really cared or wanted to be "edgy" they'd at least tackle it once in a while. Maher is the only one.

Not disagreeing with you there, but why are you demanding it of comedians? Especially when it seems you mean comedians you watch, who, and I may be wrong here, are likely to be mostly white English speaking men, whose understanding of Islam will probably be close to non-existent. And whose audience is unlikely to have enough understanding of the tenants of islam for there be much useable material beyond oft-repeated jokes like "No one said the virgins had to be women!"

And the segment this week had feck all to do with radical Christianity, it was blatantly about how these evangelists are money grabbing charlatans, and the system that allows them to operate as such.

the show is brilliant as it is. The way he combines satire, journalism and activism is fairly unique. Steward is fairly different. He was far better at improv/stand-up routines. The only one who could do Stewarts job equally well was Colbert. I really hope, that Oliver doesn´t try to follow Steward and continues to do his own thing.

He's pretty unfunny on Last Week Tonight but I liked him a lot as a daily show host. The journalism in LWT is top notch and vastly superior to The daily show.

His face annoys me, he looks like a shit Steve Carrell, he laughs at his own jokes really annoyingly, his analogies are awful and he has a constant facial expression like his mother just walked in on him masturbating... and yet I'm hooked. I've watched about 8 15 min clips in a row on YouTube. It's really good, and really funny.

I didn't like him either when he first broke through. He struck me as a ten-a-penny geeky English comic, a sort of inverse Ruby Wax, who'd only gotten big because he ticked all the boxes on the American chart of 'TV Englishness'.... But he's won me round wholesale since this show aired. He's got great writers, and pushes good issues to just the right amount of absurdity.

Yeah, despite the fact that his very presence in front of me annoys me, I can't stop watching. It's really good. He'll probably grow on me too. I don't know what ticks me more, the fact he repeats the same words every episode 'That's... in..SANE' or that the world is so fecked up that he's bang on every time but it's actually really good. Every time he makes something sound really absurd I'm like 'feck.... he's right.'

 His interview with Snowden. He must have said beforehand 'mate, I've got to be a complete cnut and make this really awkward please don't get angry'. It's hilarious. Giving Snowden his dick pick.

'Hey, why did you just send me a picture of your dick?'
'Because I love America, that's why.'

The voting segment was brilliant and also shocking.

Can't believe the state politicians voting as other people!

I don't find it that bad regarding needing an ID for voting. But maybe because in Indonesia, the length of cheating in voting is incredible, especially voting in smaller areas, like voting for mayor or governor. There were cases of people who literally went to several voting place to vote for the same candidate because the candidate allegedly pay him to do that.

Like he showed though, it's just not a real issue in the US, and they're doing it to try and get in the way of minority voters.

The nightmare joke was probably the funniest moment I've seen on his show, and the story about the 13 year old the saddest. Great episode, well done.

Which 13 year old story? There were 2 :wenger:

I feel guilty of liking a Scouser, but this guy is now undoubtedly my fave talkshow comedian. Should have been the one who replaced Stewart.
