Manchester City have completed the £18 million signing of Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra.

The People says the Frenchman is not expected to play for Portsmouth again as City do not want to risk their investment.

Diarra, 23, will officially sign on New Year's Day after boss Mark Hughes beat Manchester United and Tottenham to his signature.

The Frenchman will double his money with a £90,000-a-week deal as City's Arab owners flex their financial muscle.

Its from tribal but this could be true.

This one could be true. Pompey need the money, and City are spastics. Match made in financial heaven.

£18m.

He's the new Anelka.

he's a good player but thats just silly money. he's getting about the place a bit isnt he. whats that 4 clubs in the last 2 years?

* if its true that is

I'm assuming a City fan wrote this?

I thought they had Kompany to play that role, and needed a more box to box midfielder. From what i've saw of Diarra he's not so much box to box, more dm.

Kompany must be going to the back them i presume

He's definitely a box to box midfielder.

And a very good one at that.

Seems harsh on Michael Johnson, looks a real prospect.

First rule of tabloid football journalism. Every PL signing involves beating off competition from Manchester United.

And don't forget the signing also has to say 'I turned down Manchester United' even if we blatantly weren't interested

Yes, I'd agree he is more of a box-to-box midfielder than a Makelele type.

Fair do's - I've not seen a great deal of the guy in fairness but when I have he's impressed more as a shield for the back 4 than as an attacking force.

I'd forgot about that Johnson kid, he looked a real prospect last season. I'm sure he'll have a future there. If not then he'll have no shortage of clubs after him.

It's exactly what's wrong with football these days though.

Manchester City have a more than reasonable youth academy and this takeover will ruin that.

Middlesborough are the only one's left who promote players from their youth team and will do so for the considerable future.

Would imagine that £18 million could have taken Fernandes from Valencia. So I'm glad they got Diarra instead.

Slightly different types of players.

Not much between them either.

Diarra's a better tackler while Fernandes is better at shooting. Fernandes tries to create a lot more but both are guilty of being too positive at times and don't go for the simple ball often enough, Fernandes more so. Both are very strong and capapble dribblers and have that burst of acceleration.

Basically, Diarra's more physical in his playing style while Fernandes is more technical. Which makes sense considering their respective leagues.

Diarra is a better player than Fernandes right now, even though Fernandes may have more potential. That and if City have the money, why not. It would significantly improve them and he would get into our team imo.

Your man Johnson should move to a club like Villa.

Aye, Villa's his best bet.

Pretty much the exact same type of player as Sidwell who's been on a nice bit of form recently though, so I can't see it happening.

Could do well at Everton maybe.

I disagree, but wouldnt say theres much in it. Though I think he'd be a better combination with Kompany than Diarra will be, if thats the plan.

He's a worse player than Anderson, Scholes and Carrick.

Unless you mean he'd get into our squad, which he would obviously.

Sidwell isn't that good though, I don't think.

Diarra is better at running a midfield imo. Fernandes has a lot more flair and skill.

Maybe, there's no doubt he'd give good competition. I think he would be good in big games too. Anderson is a better player than Fletcher but it was Fletcher who got quite a few run of games.

Anderson's quite handy in the big games as well if you hadn't noticed...

No chance he'd be good enough to get ahead of Scholes or Carrick now, no chance he has as much potential as Anderson.

Anderson is not a better player than Fletcher. Fletcher is a better player than Anderson, which is why he is getting a run of games.

Anderson, however, will probably become a better player than Fletcher, providing he keeps on working hard on his game. Just like Fletcher did, in order to establish himself in the team.
