Lance Armstrong to be charged with doping offences - Washington Post

Associated Press ‏@AP
BREAKING: AP Source: Lance Armstrong confesses to Oprah Winfrey that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

I expect it to be annoying, particularly if there is any sympathy shown toward Armstrong. Is it even acceptable if the audience applaud him on at the beginning?

How will he justify his tactics of intimidation both on and off the road? Assuming that Oprah even asks him about that.

Justification is easy. "I wanted to win. I didn't think I'd get caught." Simples.

He more likely will sob.

His malicious nature warrants questioning.

Oprah should slap the tears out of him if they start.

Some journos on the radio last last Sunday were predicting that it would have similarities with the Tiger Woods apology.

His PR people are already busy controlling the story...Lance broke down in tears...Lance went to the Livestrong offices and apologized to staff there, who in turn broke down in tears....Can't we just forget and forgive the fecking narcissist....

I wonder if the cheating feck apologized to all the people who spoke up against his wrongdoing and he then blackballed from cycling by using his extensive influence.

He's going to be hit with a string of lawsuits, don't understand why didn't he just keep his mouth shut and deny everything. It's like he's happy to have gotten caught

I suspect the window of forgiveness closed some time ago. I just hope it's funny and he gets sued for every penny he cheated.

One thing I hope for is that he spills the beans on the whole business on who was cheating. Not just in his team but others too. Revenge is a dish best served cold. This is, over here, they treat Virenque like a God even though he cheated bit time, and Armstrong is treated the opposite. I have no sympathy for Armstrong however, if he does spill the beans on who was behind all the doping i.e. the team managers, the doctors and the riders, it will be for the greater good of the sport.

FFS just call a press conference/release a statement and be done with it. Is there really any need to go on a ultra hyped interview with Oprah to confess?

And the interview's not even live. They've turned it into soap opera TV.

Of course there is. He'll play the victim in a carefully orchestrated hour and a half of mushy, über-American TV and, though the rest of the world may cringe, millions of Americans will fall for it. An interview conducted by Oprah and aired by his former employer. I'm preparing myself for the most annoying 90 mins in TV history. Anything else will be a bonus.

I hope the program starts with Oprah dressed in a police uniform, and after a short reading of his crimes, she arrests him on the spot and takes him to jail.

Anyone have any idea whats let of approach Oprah is likely to take on this? I'm guessing it will be closer to Piers Morgan's interviews with his celebrity crushes than it will be to Jeremy Paxman getting thrown the corpse of Paul Mcmullan.

I don't have a clue what Oprah is like.

I'm guessing it will be, annoyingly, similar to how she interviewed Marion Jones:

I'm expecting something like:

"The whole peloton is dirty, not just me"
"I'm being made a scapegoat"
"You don't understand the pressure to dope"
"I never told anyone to dope. They did it of their own accord"
"I earned those Tour de France wins"
"They were jealous of me"

I just hope she doesn't give him a free car.

That's incredible. 40 seconds in and she's already forgotten her main defense. "Umm..I don't remember, it's been so long!"

They are now going to air the interview over two shows apparently, we can only hope that they don't use the whole of Thursday's one to tease the audience about the revelations they'll witness next time.

Oprah has described some of his answers as "mesmerising".

He'll make some money back with the book deal don't forget.

Lance: My Story - December 2013

Well it sounds like Oprah was well enough prepared, she had read David Walsh's book for one.

Was her unwillingness to reveal much about the depth of his contrition telling or all part of the suspense?

We won't know til we see it but I think it was probably down to the fact she wishes to remain impartial as an interviewer.

If she starts banding her own opinions about whether her interviewee was "this or that" she'll lower her stock as an interviewer and people will be less inclined to use her in the future.

I will be stunned if he breaks down in tears.

I honestly do not think he is doing this for forgiveness. Apparently his reason for coming clean and admitting is the hope that his punishment will be reduced and he can compete again in triathlons.

So it could be that he is not seeking forgiveness and searching for sympathy - in the way that Marion Jones etc were. I don't think showing weakness is in his dna.

I would love it if he gave an honest answer on why he took drugs - something along the lines of wanting to be the best. Everyone knows cycling was saturated with drug use - and I don't think anyone believes you could win a Tour (back then) without being on drugs of some description.

So I don't think it will be the soft, mawkish interview that people are predicting. If it is, then I will be extremely disappointed, but I think it may be surprising.

Will be disappointed? There is room for more?

This is a PR stunt. Oprah ffs. Cheating feck wins both ways, he'll make half what he loses in the eventual film rights. Cheating lying cnut should just be ignored.

I.

As opposed to what? 'For a bit of laugh!'

He took them because he wanted to win and decided to cheat to do it.

He's a fraud, simple as that.

I've got a feeling that Armstrong might have dropped a few bombshells. We might be talking about other people by tomorrow. We'll see.

Would these bombshells be of the smokescreen variety?

If there are people t be brought to the attention of the authorities then there are proper channels for that.
