Lack of progress on player sales...

Who has final say on player wages. Is it Woodward alone or are the owners involved?
woodward said he doesnt negotiate, just signs the money off. Matt Judge who does the 'negotiating'

This quote is from the biography on Judge's LinkedIn page: "Managing Manchester United's equity and debt capital structure – three equity offerings incl the IPO, totalling over $450m; and three debt refinancings ($1bn+) – debt private placement, term-loan and RCF. Also player negotiations (transfers and playing contracts)."

Not sure what the rolleyes are for.
We all know agents want the most for their clients, but somebody has to sign off on it from the club.
They are the ones accountable.
I dunno. I may be well off the mark, but Woodward doesn't seem a bit like your usual ruthless dispassionate merchant banker. Maybe he's learned from experience, but certainly in his early days he seemed rather starstruck and very much the sort of punter that a hard-bitten and canny agent would be able to take advantage of.

Damn. Seems like such an afterthought. Like, oh yeah I guess I also do this too but that's not so important. Clearly reflects in how awful he is at both those things.

Yes never thought of it like that. gives an insight into the mentality of our board

Yeah we pay most of our players way too much. We seem to be afraid to tell them 'No'.

And what is worse is most of them aren't even that amazing so if they left because they didn't get the wages they wanted we'd be okay anyway.

The issue United has is that every senior first team player they sign is £30m+. More recently, most are £50m+. So, letting a couple go for nothing is going to take a hell of a lot of money to replace.

We struggle to shift player's as we give even the average players like Lingard and Jones the kind of wages that the clubs that would be interested in can't pay.

Please sell some dead wood.
Please buy some good wood
Please F off Woodward

That is all.

There are a few rumours going around that Fred could be heading out on loan. Surely that is utter bullshit, right?

On a loan? That really can't be true. But who the feck knows what's going on in there these days.

Might as well thin out the one area we actually have good squad depth

Who would have thought that overpaying mediocre players would come back to hunt us when we want to sell them?

Couldnt be known, bad luck I guess.

Probably why no one is coming in, we have a lot of players who probably don’t realistically have a career with us anymore.

Wages are a massive problem, as are the fact we overpaid for the majority of our players. I keep seeing that Fred is off to Turkey but how much is a Turkish team going to pay for him? Correct me if I’m wrong we paid £52 million. The exchange rate in Turkey at present is 9lira to the pound, so let’s be honest Fred is going nowhere. Lingard could only go to a mid table or below team is he worth the wages? Jones high wages, high chance of injury, is he worth the risk to a mid table or below team? Rojo again no one wants him. Smalling will go big we’ll reduce the fee to 10/15 million. Mata, handy to have around anyway even if he’s way past his best.
To get them out we need movement on their wages, not many players want to swap Us and then get paid less with no chance of winning or playing in Europe.

It seems like we’re always miles behind everyone and to slow to do anything! Been like over a month into the window and we haven’t sold anyone let alone buy anyone, it’s a joke the way our club is ran. We’re the only team out of the top 6 to not of done any business.

I’ve made peace with the fact that we aren’t signing anyone and are likely going to finish outside of the top four.

I’ve been a huge critic of Solskjær (I don’t think he should ever have been given the job) but he’s getting a free pass from me for next season.

He’s not being backed by the board at all and that seems utterly outrageous. Many managers in his position would quit.

Giving Phil Jones a new 4 yr plus 1 option contract really went well for us.

Sanchez wasn't even the latest catastrophe from the club. That Jones contract is going to cost us how much over next 4 years??? Let's face it nobody will buy him.
To the AGM its we have x players and y players are on long term contracts. Looks good on paper and cheaper than paying a transfer fee and more wages for a new player.

From a fanancial perspective, yes the club needs to move the wages on but I don’t get why people would be massively concerned as long as they aren’t playing.

If better players come in and Lingard/Jones/Rojo etc only play a handful of games, I don’t really care if they sit in the reserves all season. Basically the whole ‘move on the deadwood’ is largely financial and I’m certainly more concerned about players coming in.
But the board will say we already have a grossly overpaid squad so need to sell to buy. Its a great way for them to save money. No new transfer fees, no higher wages to find.

Agree! Got no idea what is going on either. Still working on Sancho? Any backup plans?

Seems like they’ve stalled on the Sancho deal and waiting for Dortmund to drop the price which isn’t going to happen, you’d of thought we would have some back up targets and be going for them but I’m not hearing anything.

To be fair, Ed and the Legal team are probably busy on the Maguire stuff now, that will likely dominate this window now.

Mate, it’t not that Edward Woodward was busy with all those transfers before Maguire stepped on that banana skin. In all likelihood Edward was happy that something took the pressure off transfers and now he can spin that he had to deal with this shite. Edward likes to put blame on others instead of himself. So don’t help them by spinning with this also mate

Those managers knew they could get another job without problems, like Mourinho and Conte for example. But can Ole give himself that luxury? I think not.

If he resigns that would be the last we see of him at any top level, he wont do it no matter what. This is his golden ticket he's not stupid.

I think we've managed to sell a decent amount of players. Hard to sell players when they're on big wages and not wanted by big clubs.

I suppose who's going to pay the likes of lingard 100k a week and Jones 150k. Nobody. They'll have to realise that if they want to move on their career they'll need to take a substantial pay cut and go somewhere. I'd imagine some of them will do this in order to play but some might sit on their contracts.

Can you blame the club for the wage issue? The players are at Manchester United, therefore, they get Manchester United wages. The club still operates at something like 55% of total revenue on salaries. Which in comparison is quite low to most other clubs. Unfortunately, the wages are probably too high for other clubs to sustain. Why should Phil Jones be on West Ham or Burnley wages when he doesn't play for them, etc? This is the structure that United has built and it works. I don't think we over pay our players, I just think we have the luxury to be able to pay them higher than normal wages which is why we struggle to sell them.

Maybe I'm being very naïve, but it doesn't seem so difficult.
We sell the players for any amount that a team is willing to pay. We also offer to subsidize is salary for the remaining period of his contract with us.
At least that way he is off our books and we save on salaries. Final point seriously look at the process we have in place for negotiating contracts

It’s a damning assessment on our squad when we can’t shift the fringe players whatsoever.

Surely even the wildly exaggerating press ABUs aren't saying Jones is on 150k a week

Sorry my bad, 120k. Still way in excess of what any other club would pay him for the return.

It's a bit frustrating. There's quite a few who you'd think we should be able to palm off on clubs lower down the league but as long as we continue giving big contracts to average players it will be a difficult task
