Lack of progress on player sales...

By insisting on keeping them longer with lucrative new contracts + high salaries.

Digging our own graves basically.

Yeah that strategy has made it near impossible for us to sell these players because there just won't be any takers at the wages they are on,therefore only way is having to let some go on the cheap which I don't think we are going to do.

does he find space - or do the opposition let him have it knowing hes going to do nothing with it and they will have the ball back in a few second

Yeah mate he went from being too small to make it as a footballer, to England recognition, because his opponents just let him have the ball because they knew he'd do nuffin with it, is that right?

People are getting pretty impatient with lack of new signings and I totally get that. But what has got me more worried is the lack of progress on getting players out.

Sanchez is gone, true, but we was out on loan anyway and we got no fee. Supposedly had to pay him off a little bit too just to force him out. I suppose the savings on wages is worth that though.

Other than Sanchez we don't seem to be hearing much on this player exodus that many were expecting. This 20m for this player and 15m for that seems to be awfully quiet now. Smalling keeps getting mentioned but doesn't sound like Roma have much cash or are in any rush. They know he wants to join them most likely so again we will get screwed on the fee.

Romero to go for peanuts and Dalot on loan I have seen mentioned once or twice and that's about it. No offers for Lingard, Pereira, Mata, Jones etc.

This could be what's holding up offers on new players. We only have 25 spaces for players above age of 21 and non home grown. We must be close to that as it is.
Wages, we grossly overpay our squad players which understandably leads to difficulties when making a sale.

You mention Mata but instead of getting his wages off the book when we had the chance last year, we handed him a nice extension like absolute thundercunts that we are. Ditto with other wasters like Jones, Rojo, Pereira etc. No one's gonna touch them unless we accept next to no transfer fee just to get the wages off the books which makes the renewals funny. Or sad depending on how you want to look at it

Lack of selling is the main reason why we have been lacking of buying players right now. Glazer probably is preventing us to get our mega signing like Sancho due to massive squad with each player has massive wages.

7 centre backs plus Lingard, Pereira & Mata still in the squad. Not to mention Dean is back from loan means we have 4 first team age keeper. That's lot of players to have in the squad.

If we look at other teams, they have sold some players before they signed. City sold Sane before signed Torres & Ake. Chelsea got their money from last season sellings (Luiz, Morata & Hazard), Liverpool sold Lovren before they signed the backup left back, Spurs sold Walker Peters before they signed Hojbjerg. Arsenal couldn't get Partey because they need to sell first.

I think once we can sell some players then we can start seeing us buying players.

Yeah you are absolutely bang on that these ridiculous contracts given out to Jones & Mata are really hurting us now.

Obviously Matic can still do a job but he clearly should not have got a 3 year deal at his age.

Right now I am not confident we are going to sell any players and feel proper bad about saying that

From a fanancial perspective, yes the club needs to move the wages on but I don’t get why people would be massively concerned as long as they aren’t playing.

If better players come in and Lingard/Jones/Rojo etc only play a handful of games, I don’t really care if they sit in the reserves all season. Basically the whole ‘move on the deadwood’ is largely financial and I’m certainly more concerned about players coming in.

I think Smalling will be sold, Roma just got new owners and both the club and player seem to be eager to get it done. There was interest in Rojo but we stupidly seem to be looking for more money, no rumours for Jones it seems. Periera will be sold as well probably, not sure who is interested in Lingard.

Put it this way, even if Mata and Jones combined make only 250k/week, that's 40mil over 3years. That's enough to cover any financial challenges we're facing on the Sancho deal, it's mental

Agree completely on Matic as well, no business giving him a 3yr extension but there you go.

To be fair, Ed and the Legal team are probably busy on the Maguire stuff now, that will likely dominate this window now.

Think is point is that no one wants to pay 100k/week + a fee to us only to keep the physios occupied.

Maybe, but there have been cases where sick notes keep getting moves, but with Jones there is not even any rumours.

At least with our other players there seems to be some interest.

wages are a huge problem - obviously

That's why we must be willing to take losses. Something we haven't been. We may have to subsidise some wages for outgoing players, for the duration of their contracts with us. We took a loss on Sanchez, but it had to be done. The same applies to Rojo and Jones. Smalling we'll be able to sell.

Then there's Pereira who's hardly on a huge deal, Lingard who could actually fetch a price. Mata is probably on some serious dough, so he'd have to be subsidised in all likelihood. I expect them all to stay, to be honest..

Much like last summer, I'd be more impressed seeing us getting rid of 6-8 players, more than anything.

Still one of, if not the best in the squad at finding space though, anywhere on the pitch, an oft overlooked quality.

You'll never win this argument with me dude. He's atrocious. There was a very brief point in his career when he looked capable of being a United player which lasted about 6-8 games. Before and after that purple patch of form he's been incredibly mediocre.

I have sympathy for him but he's just nowhere close to being good enough if we really do intend on getting back to being title contenders.

I think we are just reviewing if we can clear the decks before we make one or two moves in the window. It's not going to be a 5 player summer....simply us plugging the holes that need fixing and letting our young stars develop into superstars. People are looking at Chelsea to evaluate ourselves, but we are in a different position to them. We have young exciting players that we plan on using now and in future. Chelsea are a club that do not have that policy and instead have gotten rid of their aging stars in Willian and Pedro. In addition to this, I'm sure nobody ever believed that they would keep playing with Tammy Abraham up front. In defence they conceded 50 plus goals this season. In contrast, we have a fairly young team with young exciting prospects. Chelsea had a good squad but an average starting xi, whilst we are opposite to that. What we need as a team is an extra attacker that can help us either use Greenwood as depth in attack or that can provide that depth. The rest of our holes are not critical and given that this is a tough financial period for all clubs, it may be best to do as little as possible outside of that attacking need.

I feel like the club would rather extend contracts of existing players, even if they've regressed and are not up to standards. The alternative to this is to buy a better player which, together with wages, transfer fees and agent fees combine, is more expensive than an overpriced contract for the average dross we keep on.

Manchester United as a football club are finished. As long as the Glazers are in charge. We have no interest in competing. I have been convinced of that now.

Jones will be here until retirement, so the best we can do there is getting 5-10 games a season from him.

Mata was a bizarre renewal. Was barely getting near the team as it was, and then we've changed to clearly go pacer and higher energy, and he just doesn't fit that mould at all.

Think you misspelled cnut there lad.

And then after losing any match he played, we will start complaining how bad he is been.

People will complain even before he played seeing the lineup. We all love to complain don't we ;).
Although last season for Lingard was very bad most of the time.
He is not the answer vs defensive sides to break them down in our set up.
Playing on the counter he can do a job, but those games are few and other teams will learn to stop him.

Who has final say on player wages. Is it Woodward alone or are the owners involved?

Romero to go for peanuts and Dalot on loan I have seen mentioned once or twice and that's about it. No offers for Lingard, Pereira, Mata, Jones etc.

If our activity on the transfer market rely on these players being sold, we are in for some of a dissappointment!

The clubs that would want to pay for them to strengthen their team will most likely be at a level where their wage demands are too high. And are those players desperate enough to move club to take a considerable pay cut? I don’t think so.

Yeah I get the distinct impression that any incomings outside of Sancho e.g Badiashile, VDB, Grealish are completely dependent on selling some of our deadwood and right now none of them look very likely to leave the club

I can't believe we haven't managed to sell Lingard, Smalling & Romero yet. Surely their combined fees would push us over the line for Sancho? It'll be a travesty if we keep any of them. Travesty for Romero who wants more game time and will now be 3rd choice. Travesty for Smalling who wanted to move to Roma & we refused to let him go over 3m euro, which we'll now lose by paying his wages as we take donkeys years to sell him. Travesty if Lingard stays because it just shows we're a charity and not a football club.

The thing is a load of club are having fire sales - Real, Barca, Juve all have aging high earning players that they need to get rid of. Who is going to buy any of them? Its going to get to he point that big clubs will have to release loads of players and not make any money on them. We were very lucky with Sanchez - look at how Real have failed to get rid of Bale.

If only...

We're probably not selling them as we need depth for next season.

I'm sure most of you can put two and two together and it makes four.

Most likely the player's agent
Not sure what the rolleyes are for.
We all know agents want the most for their clients, but somebody has to sign off on it from the club.
They are the ones accountable.

I think we will sell 1 or 2. Probably Smalling and Rojo. Then if we actually manage to buy one I do not know.

de gea, henderson, Grant, romero, periera
awb, tfm, shaw, rojo, Dalot
maguire, lindeloff, bailly, jones, tzanube, Smalling
Matic, Fred, Mctominy,
Pogba, Fernandes, Periera, Lingaard, Mata
James, Rashford, Martial
Thats 27 but hard to see 2 of the keepers not going
Rojo and smalling seem almost certain to not be here next season even if thats extended loans - could easily see one of james / mata leaving as well as one of dalot / TFM on loan... that would take us to 21 players over 21
So getting under the 25 shouldnt be too difficult - especially if we are after sancho as he wont count due to age

The keeper Periera is going on loan to Huddersfield.
