La Liga 2019/20

Atleti are fecking ridiculous when it works. 3 chances, 3 goals

I mean, on the one hand i don't see how this can be blamed on Valverde, Barcelona losing the ball stupidly in midfield isn't his fault is it? Neither is Oblak saving everything possible...

But on the other hand...how can they poasibly lose this game

Btw, supercup was supposed to be Barcelona-Valencia

The real positive of this utter nonsense is basically not having another possible intense game, and instead getting a week to do nothing whilst waiting for the league fixtures to start up again. Not much else.

Also, I wish upon everyone involved in VAR to get giant uncurable genital warts forever.

Have Umtiti and Pique forgotten how to draw a line between them or is it just that this team is totally devoid of ideas going forward AND back?.

Always the same system, always the same players (ahem, Alba, Busquets) getting exposed once games reach the climax, and we're not even improving, we're playing worse year after year. Defense used to be his saving grace, now we're getting scored like a mid table team.

Wow 3 goals in a game for Atletico... Barcelona poor defensively against Espanyol in last league game too.

Team needs a refresh. Valverde should have gone last season I think. The players run the team not the manager.

Well, with the game on the line, he did decide to completely gut their midfield by hooking Busquets and De Jong, leaving them without any control or flow whatsoever in the final 10 minutes, as you could tell from Umtiti pumping balls forward from his own half. Kinda funny how you could clearly see two lines on the pitch with Rakitic alone in between.

Either way this was a freak result, so I agree with your reasoning that this game specifically shouldn't really be looked at to criticize Valverde... there's been more than enough games for that already :D
Probably the best they've played in months too (discounting home games against the bottom teams).

I mean, if it wasn't for Oblak you'd have been 4 or 5-1 up and that was that...

All 3 of Atleti's goals were the result of mistakes in midfield. Certainly your defensive transition isn't very good, but individual mistakes are individual mistakes, not the manager's fault

It's still part of a trend though. Clearly something doesn't work and also clearly Valverde is unable to fix it

Amazing freak result. Oblak makes 7 saves, some of them outrageously good. 2 goals taken off when it should be 4-1 (a 1 millimeter decision should always be in favour of the attacker, it's in the rules). On the other side Neto fecks up with the first real attack Atletico have and it ends 3-2 Atletico. Amazing.

Piqué should hang his head in shame. For both the Morata penalty and Correa's goal he gets pulled out of position. That's just crap
It's standard Pique really. He'll turn up once in a while but he makes far too many mistakes. Umititi also doesn't look like he'll ever recover from his knee issues. Barca need more than 1 new defender if they are to stand any chance of a CL before Messi retires.
Not a bad result for Barca though as they get to avoid another pointless match and focus on Liga. Valverde sacking would make this a great result though.

On the contrary, it was a well refereed game. Oblak made decent saves, nothing too spectacular (most of them were straight at him). Both teams were really bad throughout.

These super-narrow decisions for the two disallowed goals are what I don't dig about VAR (especially the second one). Chances are they would have stood before VAR, and I think football was better off for it. But with the system in place there's probably no alternative to being super-correct, and the decisions *were* correct in the end.

Atletico with a centreback duo of Savic and Felipe is painful to watch. Felipe was barely good enough for Porto... has Hermoso really been that bad?

The starting CB duo at the beginning of the season was nominally Giménez-Savic, despite Simeone briefly "experimenting" with Hermoso (in a back three in one of the earliest games) and pairing Giménez with one of the others from game to game.
After Savic fell out with injury Simeone decide to stick with Giménez-Felipe. Then Giménez also got injured, which meant regular playing time for Hermoso.
When Giménez came back in, Felipe retained his spot as he's been solid, consistent; whereas Hermoso is more erratic with higher highs and lower lows.
Clearly Simeone prefers solidity above all. We also forget that Hermoso is only 24yo, so he should still improve.
Now that Savic has also returned from injury, it'll be interesting to see who Simeone will use to partner Giménez.

In what sense do you mean that Felipe was "barely good enough for Porto"?
Correct me if I'm wrong but over his 3 seasons there he started practically every game for them in the Liga + UCL...
So clearly they didn't think so.

if you have not followed this peculiar story.
A sexual video of Víctor (Málaga coach, former Madrid and Depor player) is made public. He is wearing a Málaga shirt and showing his parts.
He tweets that he is being extorted, with someone demanding money.

Shortly after that Málaga suspended him and Al Thani tweets this

Now the press is saying that he will be sacked/mutual agreement to leave the club in the next hours.

I's followed itssss

Baffling all around. Think the sheik just wanted an excuse to get rid of him. Wouldn't even be surprised if the club was behind it all honestly :wenger:

Also, i haven't seen the video but apparently victor has a massive knob? :wenger:

The half I watched is the one where he couldn't string two passes together and put on a Gervinho impersonation by going past two and losing the ball (not that he isn't allowed a bad patch)
Okay, no prob. Just saw it differently, as I said.

He was better than what they had but he didn't stand out at all and Porto fans weren't unhappy to see him leave. Maybe I'm being harsh but it's surreal to me to watch him start games for a team with the defensive reputation of Atletico after having seen him being just ok at a lower level for years. Similar thoughts about Herrera too, he was good for Porto but noone thought he was good enough to make this jump and keep starting for a team like Atletico.

Felipe does have the characteristics that a coach like Simeone would like but it's still a big step down to have either him or Savic as starters imo.

I think his poor last game for Porto at the Portuguese Cup final where he was basically full responsible for the defensive collapse might have changed your judgement.
Despite being a cnut on the pitch, he is a very solid CB, but he needs a faster partner. He's a great CB to deal with direct passing to the strikers, because he's very aggressive. His 17/18 season was terrific.
