La Liga - 2014/15

I'm delighted for Benzema. He has performed the unglamorous side of the game very well a lot this season and has been quite selfless and has worked tirelessly. Its nice to see him get amongst the goals and headlines this time. Another great pass by Ronaldo in what has been an absolutely brilliant performance from him.

This Madrid side still has some way to go til it's anywhere near the Barca team from a few years back.

It's refreshing to see good sides be so driven, 4-0 up and they are hungry for goals, chasing everything.

Ronaldo has a lot to do with it of course, he's never quenched his thirst for goals. Sometimes it looks like they are playing for him as much as for the team, but he's got a hunger I've not seen in our team since Keane.

How's Kroos been in the past few games?
He has done well but it is clear that he is still settling into a new team. It took Modric 6-7 months before he settled and it could be the same for him. He has still put in some good performances and has shown moments of quality. Hopefully he will improve but he doesn't sort the defensive weaknesses that the team has in midfield. I am not sure if Ancelotti has found his best team yet. He has said that the team suffers more when playing 4-3-3 but it is worth the risk because the team creates more opportunities on the counter with it. Perhaps he will eventually change it. In the CL midweek he played a 4-4-2 with Isco on the left and perhaps similar will be used in future big games.

Ronaldo's hat-trick is the icing on the cake for what has been an excellent performance by Madrid and Ronaldo.

Probably as bad as Kuyt's hattrick against Man Utd :D

He was brilliant though even without the goals.

He's been a bit meh, tbh. Not bad but not exactly setting the world alight either.

Thanks!

But it was clear from the start that he won't be a solution for that problem. I mean his strengths are clearly not in the defensive department.
I'm very interested to follow his progress for Real, I think it's a good thing that he moved away from Bayern to look for a new challenge. :)

Because your form hasn't even been that good this season, patchy is probably the best word to use - some fantastic performances and some lucky wins/dropped points.

If you retain the Champions League it'll change things obviously but if it's another season without a league title there'll be a big asterisk beside the achievement.

As for what's missing, well defensively stability for a start. I'm not a Barcelona fan by the way, but Real Madrid are the last team I'd want to win La Liga.
Hard to be one of the best club teams in history without being the best in your own country.

This was the original quote that started this little GOAT conversation. Please tell me what is so wrong with it when he clearly said "has got everything it needs to become".
This Madrid team has got everything it needs to become one of the great teams of the past.
The hate and envy is dripping from this thread. We'll show who's the best club in Spain on the 25th, don't worry. ;)

Very true. He would have been much better as an alternative option to provide something different rather than as a direct replacement for Alonso or Di maria.

I don't think this current team has everything is the problem. It's lacking a proper defensive midfielder IMO. Defence and attack are quality, as are the attacking/box to box midfielders, it's just missing that bit of steel in midfield IMO. Throw someone like Matic in there and you're laughing.

Because it's not obvious it has got everything it needs, in particular in terms of balance. Are Kroos/Modric really going to offer enough defensively against the big teams. Is the gap between the defence and attack in those games going to be too big to bridge.

Ancelotti's got his work cut out, but he's probably as good a manager for the problem as money can buy. He's not particularly sensitive about systems or principles like possession. They asked him about James "playing the Di Maria role" and he came back with a remark something like, James isn't Di Maria, he's James so that's how he'll play. Good attitude. It'll certainly be interesting to see how it evolves.

Beating your city rivals in at least 1 of your 3 games this season would have been a good time to show it ;)

Who'll get more assists plus goals out of Neymar and Bale ? And Ronaldo and Messi this season ?

Hannibal lector is the X factor for Barca.

I think Modric, Kroos and James can be defensive enough for most games (especially since Modric isn't playing as advanced as last season) but when needed we can switch to 442 with Bale sitting a bit deeper.

We also have Illarra for the tougher games who is starting to redeem himself a bit it seems. He might yet come good.

 Ok, good one, I'll admit. The 'huge exaggeration' is something that grated me a bit that's all.

But yeah, we can't be winning 5-0 playing fantastic football without some haters trying to put us down I guess. :smirk:

Seems weird that Benzema will probably go down as one of Madrid's greatest ever strikers, he's currently on 116 goals for them and he turns 27 in couple months, he could definitely hit 180. Hugo Sanchez is currently their 6th highest scorer on 208, if he stays for another 6/7 years he might even break that.

I wasn't putting your team down to be fair. There's a big difference between saying you're not one of the greatest teams ever and actually criticising your team...

Like you (kinda) said though I think the first Clásico will show where Real Madrid (and Barça) are really at.

We haven't seen much of the Verminator for Barca. What's going on there - injured again?

No, he recovered. Apparently Barca have 4 CD's at this moment, 5 if you count Masche (atleast our coaches think so). Yet to concede any goals in the league yet, so I think it will take sometime to get him to the starting lineup.

They couldn't beat Barca in the league last year, at a time when I would say Barca was weaker and they were stronger. They won't find it any easier this time.
