United Watch French Teenager

Scouts from Old Trafford were at St Etienne’s game with Toulouse on Saturday night. United’s representatives were there to watch St Etienne’s 17-year-old central defender, Kurt Zouma who has played in two games in France’s Ligue 1 this season.

Manchester City, Chelsea and Juventus are also keen on the youngster with City having had a £5million bid turned down earlier this year; however, St Etienne president Roland Romeyer says Zouma won’t be going anywhere.

“No offer has arrived at St Etienne and Kurt is not for sale. We want to keep in our squad this season.”

Zouma was part of the St Etienne under-19 team that finished runner-up in the 2010-11 Coupe Gambardella, France’s national youth tournament and made his first-team debut last season playing 22 times for the side.

Never heard of him but reading up reports he is supposed to be a beast of a defender!

One day he'll have a 150-page long transfer thread on the Caf.

No Nirvana puns yet? Oh well, nevermind.

He's practically in utero compared to our first choice CBs.

He's looked good the few times I've seen him very strong in the air, quick and a massive build one of those defenders who trys to really dominate the player he's marking physically. Havent seen enough of him yet to figure out how clever he is or if he's one of those players who can look better than he really is because of his physical attributes like Micah Richards

No Nirvana pun, get out.

I wonder if the media have simply gone and done:

United in centre back crisis + Young, talented French centre-back after missing out on Varane last year = A story.

Plus, it doesn't look like the club want to sell him.

Could well be. But if he gets a hint of the United-fever I doubt they can stand in his way (if we're interested that is). Saint-Etienne is not exactly a big club either..

Guess he isn't the "big cheese" and that the article is "dumb" and a bit of a "downer"

Oh well, this Nirvana thing I'll continue to "milk it"

could be, and unlikely we will not just make do. but from what i can gather it could be a couple of months before Smalling and Jones are fit, Rio is hardly ever fit nowadays, and im not sure on Evans.

If it is going to be quite a while, we may have to move for a CB, rather than risk falling too far behind before everyone is back. We tried to make do last year after an injury crisis in midfield, and we ended up rushing players like clev back too soon and paid the price for that in the end.

I don't know what the answer is tbh, but these fecking injuries are getting ridculous, seems to decimate one specific area of the team all at the same time! Bizarre!

Sir Alex was at Geoffroy Guichard to oversee Saint-Étienne’s Kurt Zouma. United expected to offer €11 million. [via @MikaMartinHaim

Its looking that way seeing as no pics have come up showing fergie at the match as of yet. One for next year maybe.

Just out of curiosity, were there any pictures of Fergie at the Crewe game when he went to check on Powell? It was widely reported at the time, but I can't remember seeing any.

Would be a good signing and makes sense. At 17 he's not really young enough to challenge for first team for 2 years, by which time Rio and Vida will almost definitely have left, leaving us with Evans, Jones, Smalling, Michael Keane (think he'll make it here) and Zouma.

He's 18 now and has played 7 league games helping Saint Etienne to 5th in the table and have joint best defensive record with Bordeaux and PSG. Cant be too bad

I actually can't find anything on the Le10 website regarding this story.

If Fergie did go out and sign a monster young Central defender then it would suggest he has a midfield role for Jones in the future pencilled in.....But this could be a load of BS so Im still fully expecting Jones only ever to be a Defender

The thing is we have so many CBs with injury issues. We can and will hope that they clear up but when? Its a lottery. I'm sure if theres truth in us wanting to sign this defender, and lets not forget we were in for Varane, then its more about covering our bases in terms of injuries and wanting to go 1, just 1 season without Carrick having to play CB
