Kroos "the deal was all but done"

Even if we signed him he would have been stifled by the system. Kroos and Fred would have been hilarious.

Might be said in gist above but it has to be remembered that Kroos' only weak season of his career came under LvG, who just had the wrong idea on how to play him (as a defensive 6). If he and LvG did happen to agree on the signing he might've been poorly utilized here as well. Kroos knew what he would've been getting into after we signed LvG and correctly thought otherwise.

Yeah every player he targeted for us was an unknown gem. Virtually no one knew about the likes Fabregas, Bale and Fellaini at the time.
Well he got the Kroos deal done when midfield was a problem area, if it was so easy then we would have had far better midfields than the past 10 years. We went from potentially having two possession midfielders that could control midfields to nobody who could do so. Those players are rare in world football and we dropped the ball on that one.

Yeah but Kroos was hardly an unknown uncut diamond circa 2014 that Moyes discovered. He'd just won the treble with Bayern and played 200+ games for them at that point.

And let's not forget he also thought Fellaini was the answer to our midfield problems so he loses brownie points for that.

This isnt really true, we could have signed Fellaini for much cheaper in the July when he release clause was active but Moyes decided against it and focussed on other midfield targets, it was only on deadline day when the pursuits of all the other targets had failed that he went and signed Fellaini.

Not exactly. Moyes was negotiating for both Baines and Fellaini all summer long. He thought that he could lower the price of both players by making a joint offer.

Edit: The last minute alternative to Fabregas and others was the failed transfer of Herrera and the infamous three amigos.

I still can’t get my head around why the hell Van Gaal vetoed this transfer when Kroos would’ve suited him perfectly. Instead choosing to go with Morgan fecking Schneiderlin! :nono:

Moyes should have been given more time to start the next season with his own players; at least he wouldn’t have got rid of the likes of Evans, Welbeck, Fletcher etc who would have served the club/next manager well as squad players rather than the substandard donkeys who were brought in to fulfil the same roles.

Kroos could have been fantastic for the club.

Used to lament Kroos and Varane not coming, what could've been but they've dodged bullets. I can only see them winning the odd cup here and wasting their career before leaving. If Fergie was 10 years younger or we actually prepared for him leaving in manner City were preparing themselves, yes. Even now in 2024 it's the same hole/cycle we're in since 2013.

It is true though, we signed him.

Fellaini wasn't necessarily a back-up option for other targets, Moyes has said on record the delay in signing Fellaini was only because he wanted to make a marquee signing first as he (rightly) suspected if Fellaini was his first/only signing he'd be under immense pressure. And he didn't want to put him in that position.

I think it was the summer after he went for the Schmidfield but it doesn't excuse it at all. That window did more damage that most since Fergie left, we had just scraped into the CL the previous season and probably should have been looking onwards and upwards. Instead we signed donkeys and several of them.
