Kroos "the deal was all but done"

:wenger: People have short memories around here

The football was terrible, but would have become defensively sound and still fairly bad, but the transfers would have been sensible and the next manager would have done well. With the amount of money we have, it was really remarkable to have had this weak a decade.

It would at least save from over-spending on Pogba for 89m and lost him for free years later as well as less drama. He might even be strong candidate for the captaincy right now.
We would have played them together and they'd have won the league under Jose.

Kroos and Pogba in midfield instead of Fellaini, and you say it wouldn't have made more difference?!

There’s no way he would have worked at United.
He’s hyper specialized, so his midfield partners have to be able to cover for him. He is one of the few players where i think that he can turn a very good team into a great team but would fail at weaker teams.

It's like a memo went round telling everyone in football to get their digs in on United now and you better go in hard because next season we're coming.

I'm not sure with his ability and passing range he could fail that much though, even if he didn't reach his Real Madrid peaks, he would still be way better than some of the chancers that have lined up for us. 80% Kroos would be miles better than Fellaini, McTominay, Fred and others.

Moyes was shit for us and deserved to be sacked, no doubt. But...

One can't help but wonder what would've happened if we had kept him for another season instead of appointing LVG. For all his faults, Moyes did seem to understand where the main problems lay in the squad.
He had his chance to sign players and ended up overspending for fecking Fellaini.

What all of this shows is that we were run by Muppets like Woodward without any clear direction and allowed managers to do whatever they wanted.

It’s things like this where while yes, the manager should have the final say on transfers - but is it always wise?

van Gaal didn’t want Bayern to sign Neuer and felt Stark was the future. He rejected Kroos and played Blind there (the Schmidfield was second season I think)

Moyes rejected Thiago and signed Fellaini.

This is where having a clear footballing philosophy for the future from top to bottom of the club would have had us avoiding such terrible mistakes post fergie. Wouldn't have had such contrasting managers taking over from each other and having a scattergun transfer approach due to a complete lack of identity as a footballing side.

Apparently in recent interview he spoke about it again.
https://www.sport1.de/news/transfer...g-dann-haben-wir-beidseitig-dankend-abgelehnt

“In 2014, before I signed with Real Madrid, I had already agreed with Manchester United. That would have been a move from Bayern to United.”
“But then they kicked out David Moyes, who I was still sitting on my couch with in Munich and hired Louis van Gaal. Then we both declined with thanks”, he explained.
“It was a really nice afternoon with very pleasant people. We talked a lot about United’s football plan, which convinced me”

That implies he still wanted to sign even when we were crap, no? all thanks to Moyes' plan.

Yeah really stings the eyes seeing those quotes

In hindsight, we should have kept Moyes and sacked him in November just to get Kroos in. He was also interested in signing Fabregas around that time I believe, who went on to win the league with Chelsea. Moyes to be fair to him has always had a good eye for a player.

Kroos alone would not have solved a single thing for us. Not at that time and not with the way we've progressed since. People hanging their hats onto any single one manager being at fault for not bringing in player X are delusional IMHO. Only a handful of players to build a team around over the years and Kroos - while great - is and was not one of them. This is just hindsight is 20/20 type stuff - but with rose colored glasses on if it fits an easy excuse.

Imagine the difference in his trophy cabinet
Could have had Carabao cup and Snapdragon trophy. I bet not even 0.01% of professional football players have a Snapdragon trophy in their cabinet.

He also wanted fabregas and Ronaldo (could be wrong about the later).

A fabregas/kroos/Carrick midfield is good enough to win the league in 2016 imo.

Kroos = world class in midfield
Fellaini = world class at chest control

It was a like for like replacement anyway.

Over the last ten years, anything that could do wrong, well and truly did go wrong.

He was ridiculed at the time because he was on appointed on the back of SAF leaving, but part of me wonders how would he have fared today had he been appointed post Ten Hag? Or even then had he not sacked the backroom staff?

We could have had Kroos and Fabregas in midfield. Never understood why he didn't rate Thiago though.

Looking back on, him walking into our dugout and seeing just how far behind we were even compared to Everton, probably terriefied him. He probably became even more terrified when Woodward was appointed as his supervisor. Part of me wonders, what if his: "we need to aspire to be more like City" comments where in reference to the operational department, rather than footballing ones?

Kroos would have been a fantastic signing and would transformed the midfield overnight.

The interesting thing about Moyes was he clearly he identified the major problems on the playing side but it was the lack of structure off the pitch and Ed Woodward running things that ultimately killed him. Had he been able to get some of his rumoured targets in, things would have been very different. He ultimately had to go to Everton for players but that's who he trusted when it was clear getting anyone else in would be difficult.

Even signing Herrera and Baines in that first transfer window would have decent for him.

On a wider point, those three or four years post Fergie pre Guardiola were very odd. Nobody was miles ahead of anyone and even some sensible signings would have seen us challenge for the title. Instead, we seemed to change philosophy every 6 months which is still kind of contributing to the current mess.

Why do we keep coming back to this? It's been discussed and stated endlessly

He's not the only player Utd have missed out on the list is long Like other clubs.

Yeah every player he targeted for us was an unknown gem. Virtually no one knew about the likes Fabregas, Bale and Fellaini at the time.

Fabregas was Moyes' first summer. Moyes was convinced he was coming but the player changed his mind late in the window and opted to stay at Barcelona, only to join Chelsea a year later.

It’s a thing people bring up to put us down and big him up but it would have mattered very little. With the way we are run it would have just resulted in him achieving less in his career. He was a very good player but wouldn’t have solved much on his own.

So going by those quotes the story of LVG not wanting him is shite? Kroos turned us down due to how we handled the sacking of Moyes? Bit of a twist.

“But then they kicked out David Moyes, who I was still sitting on my couch with in Munich

I wonder what Dave was doing on Toni's couch?
