Sir Alex was pretty good at bringing in good prospects from lesser teams in the Premiership at the time, like Rio, Saha, Young, and to some extent, Zaha. Shame Fergie never got time to work wirth him. Who was the last signing from another team from the league?

That said, I wouldn't have minded us signing someone in the likes of Wan Bissaka or Ward-Prowse. I think Ward-Prows could improve his game at us and have a bigger overall impact compared to someone like Jesse fecking Lingard and todays version of Ashley Young.

The problem is that there are only so many positions we can really upgrade on in one window, and in terms of the midfield Matic needs to be replaced more than Herrera. The type of player we replace Matic with then determines if we need to replace Herrera as well.

If we look to replace Matic with a more defensive oriented player (such as what Rice apparently is), then Herrera needs replacing as well. We would need to increase the creativity and playmaking ability of that midfield. However, if we replaced Matic with somebody who is more of a deep-lying playmaker (let's say Neves for example) then we would need Herrera in there to provide that extra defensive shielding. It's why I favour the latter option so we would only need to sign the one midfielder and could focus on other positions (unless Herrera ends up leaving of course).

I see no reason to replace Matic with a more defensive player, he's already defensive enough. I see three options for our midfield.

2) Replace Herrera with a more creative CM
3) Keep them both and go all out in improving the attack

Only Pogba can provide the spark going forward consistently. Martial, Rashford and Lukaku are incredibly streaky. We need more than that, ideally 2 more players (one from midfield and one from right wing).

Matic is nowhere near good enough defensively to do that role himself. Maybe when he was younger, but this season in particular (under both Mourinho and Ole) he has constantly allowed himself to be pulled out of position and let players run straight past him into incredibly dangerous positions.

Matic also doesn't particularly suit the high press style of play that Ole does seem to want to use. He's not mobile enough for it. Whereas Herrera is the most important player in our team in terms of pressing and winning the ball back quickly, and arguably second only to Kante in the league.

That's why I don't see your #2 as a real option unless that more creative CM also does almost as much defensively as Herrera himself. More likely we'd have to replace both if that is how we wanted to go. #1 would be easier to do, or at least would allow us to spread out the change over a couple of seasons.

I wouldn't bother with Rabiot at all, I know he's attractive due to his contract situation and talent but he seems a complete tosser. He'd be a problem. AWB also, I would go for an older RB instead (but not Young level of old).
